Dude learning how to kickflip in just 1 week is super impressive. Like the other people said it usually takes a few months or even a year or so. Also it's sick that Tony Hawk was literally the person who taught you.
As someone who's been skating 25 years, i almost cried with you after the land. Because i too know that feeling, but it took me well over a year to land like the other skaters you met. So it's truly incredible to did this! So stoked!! Also, tony's the fuckin' MAN. Always has been.

Same here brother super emotional. That's the dragon us old guys are chasing. U could see Tony was stoked for u as well. Damn things bring out the true kid in anyone
Okay okay okay whoa. Can we take a minute to appreciate how HARD this guy went. Like full commitment straight away. Even not being super comfy on the board, Isaiah sent it and experienced the full park like it was nothing. He went so hard he literally ate the concrete like a champ, and landed an Ollie his first day?? Bro mad respect. You're a natural learner!
Favorite part of the video is seeing how stoked Tony Hawk got when you landed it, also the skaters helping at the park shows the camaraderie that exists in skateboarding because we were all beginners at one point.
As someone who's skated since I was 5, now I'm 27. This video made me really appreciate you. It took me until I was 7 to land my first kickflip, mainly started out on vert. Alot of people don't know exactly what it takes to skate. I have these same struggles learning new tricks too even going back to old trick can throw you off. It's all a muscle memory/confidence game.
He's given the same kickflip advice thousands of times. He's done camps, workshops, charity, being nice down the skatepark, all where he has given advice on how to kickflip. Tony will be first to tell u, despite being the vert goat, his street skating isn't as high a standard. His kickflip on street, isn't the best of kickflips.
@@kapumbasipo Ok so I’m still working on leveling out my Ollie’s but I can try and give u some tips. Ok so I heard timing is a big problem for me heres the timing. 1. Squat 2. Pop and start sliding front foot up. (It’s almost at the same time but the slide is a bit delayed) 3. Slide front foot up to nose 4. Push front foot a bit toward to level out the board Make sure to try and stay over the board and I really recommend just standing there and practicing the front foot slide for a few minutes everyday. Reason I really recommend doing this is because when I first started doing Ollie’s I noticed my foot wasn’t really sliding up to the nose but kinda just like flexing and barely sliding and once I started practicing the slide thing everyday my Ollie’s improved. If u have any specific questions I can try and give u tips if u want (:
@@Adam-lq1yn Just grab ur board and keep ur back foot on the tail and just practice sliding ur front foot up to the nose over and over and really make sure u are trying to flex ur ankle when sliding up and make sure ur sliding in the middle of the board. And then once u think u got the slide better u can try and Ollie and while u do it really try and focus on the slide and look down to see whether ur front foot is sliding or not. If u have already watched tutorials I really recommend watching sean browns tutorials his tutorials can be really helpful!
Respect man! I started skating when I was probably 13 and skated almost everyday till I was like 25. Life happened, and blah blah blah, whatever. Seeing your drive to learn really makes me want to get my board out and go cruise around. It took me a solid 4 months of consistently trying to learn kickflips, but I already had my balance figured out along with other simple tricks. For you to go from a sloppy Ollie to kick flips in way less than a month is incredible. Props to you man. And to Tony just for being the legend that he is
Dude, I am learning to skate right now after a 10-year break and I feel the pain and struggle. Watching you do this is so inspirational! Thank you and congratulations!
Skaters are just such a chill cool community, people are just stoked when somebody learned a new trick and they shared stuffs with each other to make each other better. I always thought skate parks would be super intimidating but the skaters there are super chill and nice, always down to help out! Like Rodney Mullen said, it's giving to collectively grow, love the vibe ❤️
I love you show the actual pain and suffering we go through to learn and enjoy this really hard skill to master. I wanna show everyone this video. It helps explain why I have so many scars and broken joints and bones.
Another good tip that he may or may not have told you is that if you want to stick the landing and keep your balance afterwards its good to visualize where your trucks are, and try to land with your feet directly over them, this will widen your stance and make you more stable as you roll out of it. I also would say its best to not practice the trick sitting in one spot, but instead get a slow rolling start and practice getting that solid landing while you're still moving, and lean forward a little more to compensate for the momentum and avoid slipping back
Bro I have been skating for like 2 months and I can’t do a kickflip, and you were able to learn one in less than a week. You’re a natural and I definitely encourage you to keep skating.

I usually dont leave a lot of comments in YT. I am 43. Have been on a skateboard last week (for exactly) one day. Just stayed on the board without falling down. I consider that an achievement. In this video you taught the real meaning for a lot of words including resolution, passion, purpose... You gave it your all, for a full week. Dislocated shoulder or what, you were resolved to learn and achieve what you set out to. That gives motivation to do a lot of things - not necessarily on a skateboard. Will be sending this video to anyone who is in need of some inspiration.
Tony was genuinely happy to see you land it, such a great vid! I just got back into skateboarding after having many surgeries on my leg when i was young. Thought the best idea was to stop what I loved doing, but fuck that! Anyone who reads this who wants to get back on the board or learn from scratch, go for it! You wont regret it.
I think anyone can learn to kickflip in a week, but it's kind of dangerous if you don't have a solid foundation. That's why I think a lot of skaters take a year to really build a foundation and learn other tricks before they try to learn kickflip and also with that foundation you can incorporate that kickflip knowledge into other tricks that you already have like 180s and shove it easier
@@kapumbasipo I feel the reason people find it takes a lot of time is because they probably haven’t really gotten a really good slide on Ollie’s cuz with kick flips it’s really mainly about the flick on the side. People also really have trouble landing on the board cuz they kinda kick it away or don’t stay over the board
It‘s not bad but it‘s not super impressive. Good effort of him tho. (But it isn‘t his first time skating. Like he got the basic basics down… that is a big difference to first time standing on a board). Most people take longer to learn a kickflip but the thing is skating isn‘t just about being able to kickflip. And the guys who start skating and really wanna learn skating learn a lot in the time till they land their first kickflip. Like their target isn’t just landing a kickflip standing. They wanna learn skating in all it’s facets. Also it makes more sense to learn other tricks first if u wanna progress quick.
The bigger factor I think that holds people back is their Inherit balance skill combined with their athletic ability to jump and move a board with their feet. People always underestimate how much physical effort it takes, some people need to build the strength before they can land anything. But if you're young and play basketball or are generally athletic and skinny with decent balance you can %100 learn to kickflip in a week but your shins will look like it went through a blender by the end XD

32 years old here. Skating since I was 7, Dad is Animal Chin age and taught me how to skate, he was a kid too. When you take your front foot off before "catching" the flip you have no chance. Stay above the board no matter if you might fall. Keep all your lower extremities above the board! And parallel.
This is probably one of the best UA-cam videos I have ever seen. Such a remarkable and well documented journey with an even more remarkable ending. Well done 👏🏼
I’m learning how to Ollie and it has been a bit over a week and I can barely get off the ground when I don’t fall and I fall a LOT. You should definitely kee0 skating because the determination that you have is just absolutely crazy and you are super talented
I have seen people land a kickflip day 2 and I have seen it take people 15 years. I learned to ride and ollie up and down curbs before I decided to learn kickflip and it made it a first day try for me but I already had the control and prescribed muscle for the trick. Very impressive and great video don't quit keep skateboarding!
Bro Tony’s exactly right to at the end, when Lake put his board together and he went to that first park I knew his trucks were hella lose. To lose for a beginner. But this video is incredible! Literally Tony is the god and just transferred powers to you and you got that shit down perfectly! 😭💪🏻🔥
Dang... I skated between the yrs '88 & '96. It took me months to learn a kick flip and even then it was often a matter of luck to land because we hadn't fine tuned the landing back then. Nowadays they grab the board with their feet while it's still airborne as to forge a better landing. Your first land was tear jerking lol, nice one ! Looking forward watching you do a MC twist in 5 days or so !!!
This is where the term skate or die comes from, this kind of determination and persistence, embracing the pain and pushing forward. I hope you gained some perspective on what it's like to actually skateboard and got to feel the love for it.

Never seen a single video you have made before. I was also a 80-90s baby. I remember watching Tony do the first 900 live. Great video bro. Really great. Been skateboarding for like 20 years almost. You should try shredding some big hills next. Big rush bro.
Awesome 👌 grats on doing a kick flip and for getting not only advice from Tony Hawk but also getting to hangout with your childhood hero!
Early gang less go
Oh yes you know it

He’s not first…
Hey don't stress, the Austin skate community is super chill everyone is pretty much mutuals with everybody. Very beginner friendly.
That was freakin cool.. the emotional battle (and physical) is what it’s all about with skating!! I can’t believe you landed it in 7 (or 8 😂) days!!
Amazing work.. now keep skating. Next task is back side 50/50 on coping 😉
Congratulations man hope u start skating more often you are really talented
The genuine joy Tony had for him is so heartwarming
That is so neat that Tony took time out of his day to help and hang out, what a guy!!! That would bena dream come true!
nah byt can we js appreciate how fast this dude progressed...a decent ollie in a day and let alone even flipping the board on day 2...thats act crazy
I like how Tony gets as much excited as he does seeing someone new land a kick flip as he does seeing someone land a harder trick
I’m learning how to Ollie and it has been a bit over a week and I can barely get off the ground when I don’t fall and I fall a LOT. You should definitely kee0 skating because the determination that you have is just absolutely crazy and you are super talented
I dont think I've ever been so happy for someone in a UA-cam video. Great work.
Dang, Tony seems like a chill dude, good teacher it seems like as well.
was a great video, thanks for posting... I'm personally back on my board after 40 years lol and loving it...
fuckin love how as soon as tony started giving advice you immediately got it. hes the skateboarding king of the universe for good reason.
It's crazy how instantly helpful Tony's advice was. Like your very next try was way closer
This is where the term skate or die comes from, this kind of determination and persistence, embracing the pain and pushing forward. I hope you gained some perspective on what it's like to actually skateboard and got to feel the love for it.
Love it! Tony’s been skating for 40 years and still gets pumped over someone landing their first kick flip 😊🤙
