@@td335 yeah of course aoes are great, everyone knows, but I think he said that to enfatize you cant "win" this scenario by simply dropping random aoes
While not optimal, go full scorched earth. I cast nuke!
I like this idea especially for necromancers & druid bbegs.
A good example could be a necromancer in the sewer woth hordes of undead. Standing on piles of corpses that slowly rise and nearby barred sewer drain are slammed with ravenous dead and randoming rupture to spawn in new squads of ghouls into the fight.
So call of duty zombies?

Good gimmick for a rat king boss. Death by a thousand nibbles.
The boss runs around the room, mouseholing on scaffolding/second-story while the party starts in a pool of regular rats.
Also, rats are gross. Lol. Nice one!
Two castings of Wind Wall in L shapes to make a 25x25ft box around the boss, and a single AoE to kill any of the swarm within that box. Might not be perfrct depending on the area the fight is in, but gives some breathing room!

First things first Kinetic Jaunt, next mass suggestion to try and turn them against their master and finally a few kegs of gunpowder and a fire ball should clear the rest
Turning them against the boss would be awesome. The need to hear and understand might be troublesome for most groups.
cast confuse around the boss... then the boss gets attacked by the swarm several times...
The DM has to either cast dice for each or for all.
Fun option!
