This actually sounds amazing. Not just because it perfectly plays the tune correctly, but because they sound amazing as their own instruments...sets of eight floppy drives need to be brought into the electronic music industry. there's great stuff to be made out of this!
True mechanical sounds always sound richer and more interesting than pure synth stuff. Watching a band like Einstürzende Neubauten bang away on weird machines on stage to make sound creates a totally different vibe than somebody pressing a button on a laptop to trigger a synth loop.

Amazing. My mother still has some old floppy disks stashed at home somewhere, because the first computer she got in the 1990s was my old one I handed down to her. But I never imagined you could do music with them. That really deserves to becalled "performance art".
Damn it, I hate it when I find videos like this. It just makes me want to waste a ton of time and go build my own version! :P Time to get the 3D printers playing music again lol.
totally dude, i spent like 5 fucking years building a Rube Goldberg machine after i saw the Ok Go music video. and i don't even want to talk about the All Star music video, i had to burn down a house.
My father once said to a worker at a store about a USB drive, "who would ever need more than 15 MB of space?" Now, my dad owns a separate hard drive with 1 TB of space on it.
Ah lol really? I came up with it, but it's not surprising for others too. We're all living through the PTSD of getting through Windows in the 90s without something crashing.
Magic I was Born at the End of the 90s, 99 to be exact, but I grew up with a slow Laptop the ran XP and always crashed or overheated. XP is still my favorite OS to this very day.
First PC I ever used was an old 286 with EGA graphics and Windows 3.11 that my dad bought some time around 1993. Horrible pile of junk, it worked for basic word processing, but my SNES had better graphics and the sound wasn't much of a step up from the ZX Spectrum my dad had bought in the early 1980s.
I bet all the kids today are going to be like "What the hell is a floppy disc" Hard to think 15y ago it could hold 1.5MB today you have cellphone cards with 60GB space
I remember owning a 512 MB mp3 player. I thought that was the shit, it was like 7-8 years back. it's insane how quickly technology changes. now mp3 players are obsolete almost :/
Eric Jansson You small memory cards with 128GB now from what I heard Imagine back like 20y ago when computers were huge, ugly blocks and barely stored 5-10MB Today we have 128GB advanced machines in pockets with navigation, games, movies and music and Cam-Chat
Daniel Weinberger Good times, I used to always break them... Nowadays it's like microSDs with 64gigs and flash drives with 124gigs... I remember back then when a computer would cost millions and take up an entire room and only hole 512Megabytes. Haha, I guess I didn't really like it back then.
I remember I felt so cool being able to play pokemon yellow off a floppy with the emulator in bundle at primary and barely being able to store anything else!
I listen to a few already and just found this and over 1.4 million even. You really nailed this one, this is epic I'm flat out smiling so wide to hear this. Egon would be in tears to see a great reuse of technology honoring the team he's part of.
If Egon had this playing in the background with the slime making hard drives do this(like he did with the toaster), it'd be amazing for the next movie.
These never cease to amaze me. Just amazing firing one of these up in a computer class. "Yes, Professor. I have been paying attention to IRQ and and seek functions. See?"
and the funniest part is that people call these things now useless...you watch what you can do with these "useless" things!!! simply amazing...I love it! very good work!
I remember when I was a kid I asked Me: Dad, how does technology work? My Dad: IT'S MAGIC, TYLER. After than on, little Tyler was never again right in the head. :P
Wow, this is great! Much more involved than just one Commodore 1541 playing "Daisy, Daisy" or something like that. Please tell us how in the world you can do this! (While you're at that, will you remove the apostrophe from "Ghostbuster's," since it's actually meant as a plural; not possessive or a contraction?)
You've got a video of it that you can show me? We wouldn't be able to hear them as much except the very old stepper-motor type, because even though current head-stepping technology is called a voice coil, it has no speaker cone, so it would probably be very quiet since it's not a motor with brushes.
"...and the actuators"? Um... the stepper motor *is* an actuator. So in even a semi-modern hard disk, of course there's an actuator there too: the voice coil. It's not a literal stepper motor, but it's obviously very precise anyway. However, it's not as audible as a stepper motor is, so if a program could do anything like this with a hard disk drive, we might not hear that much. Do ya... have a video of that sort of thing that you could show me?
As much as i adore Game of Thrones, Star Trek TNG and Doctor Who, this was the one to get me the most excited and got me fangirling the most! SUBSCRIBED!

Wasn't there once a software for the C64 which made floppy drives make music?

Yes, He did it o7
@win2008workstation Thanks mate, wouldn't have remembered that reference if it wasn't for that. Great movie
LOL same!
Such a freak! Looks he even managed to hack his MONITOR so that the "stand-by" LED is in sync with the floppies' notes! HAHA! Priceless.
+pianoman74 I didn't think that was a monitor light, I thought that was a light in the controller circuit. I guess I don't know! I do wonder now...
