I got true duals on my 91 350 k1500 with dual cherry bomb glasspacks and they sound super mean. I would have them over anything else out there especially when really broken in good!
I used to think these blocks were a good idea. But it turns out stock internals are just fine on engines without detonation problems and the ls parts are well designed. While the sbc has an oil pump that doesnt eat much power the ls has ventilation between cylinders, larger cam core, a cross bolted skirted block for noise rejection and main cap stability etc... The ls has proven that the importance of a forged crank in anything but a split pin v6 is highly over rated and if you don't have to buy racecar parts then why do it? The aftermarket has addressed the oil pan situation and the lack of a distributor and even with the hybrid block headers are still a consideration and now brackets can be an issue where they wouldn't be with a true full ls. I mean if you just love distributors mechanical fuel pumps it might seem like a good idea but for the cost of an aftermarket block you could just buy afr heads and keep the 23 degree setup. Heck you could but 15 or 13 degree race heads or some used sb2 or 18 degree heads.
Neat, money money money. That being said it sounds like the 53 year old 292 in my farm truck. Makes decent power though I just can't get over that lifter sound.
If they wanted to get 5 to 8 more horsepower they should have installed a 1 inch carb spacer plate only because those butter flys on the carb should be above to top of the runners and not even with them , also they should side gap all the plugs to expose the spark directly to the combustion chambers .
Think they'd make them the other way around but I guess we can't argue with progress??? Why don't they just re-design a LS style head to fit any stock small (block) bolt patterns. BUT I'm sure there's plenty of other issues with cooling flow and other minor things.
This concept seemed quite interesting and feasible ay the time, but it never seemed to catch on. We do roughly 80 to 90 builds each year, and we're building many small blocks from 383 to 427 and even a couple of 434's. As well, we do a few LS motors, but we've never had anyone approach us for this Chevy/LS combo. World Products produced a 1st gen block with the LS bolt pattern decks, and I expected that idea to gain some speed. The selling point was fitting LS technology into early Chevys without having to modify the crossmember and engine mounts etc. Now that several companies offer beefier LS blocks, no one seems interested in mounting LS top ends on early blocks
If the only benefit would be motor mounts and cross member then it doesn't make sense. Those items are super cheap compared to trying to build this over a regular LS with swap parts.
Crazy to build this caliber of engine with a cast iron timing gear, i dont even use them in stock engines anymore since ive found 3 cam gears cracked with nothing more than a valve spring upgrade. Luckily they chose to do a cam change soon after spring upgrade

The “Secret” to the Ls engines power potential is in the heads. Factory LS heads flow the kind of air that big dollar aftermarket heads do for the gen 1 sbc. So those who say that a decent set of heads on a standard small block is every bit as good as an LS, doesn’t understand the limitations of the og small block (max cam lift especially when using a hydraulic roller, cooling issues especially with the siamesed exhaust ports). these are really only limitations when compared to modern engines ie the LS, a small block can make more than enough grunt for the street, that power is just easier to produce with an LS
and tight tolerancesw and balancing theyre made by robots unlike its daddy the sbc they improved every bad thing a sbc had wrong with it why go back to the dinosour ages doesnt make any sense!
They do all these projects but never fess up to what it all costs. For the price of the special block and crank along with the rods pistons cam and lifters, you could probably build at least two 600 hp LS motors to put that set of LS heads on.

To everybody asking why? Because of horsepower losses from oil windage. A LS deep skirt is far superior for strength, esp under forced air, but the air and oil doesntt move around as well. @@INSIDIOUS1986 yea right. i guess thats why everyone knows about this legendary 207ci motor that the drag racing world worships. Next you're gonna try to tell me you had a 66' mustang with a 289 that would jump a coke bottle off the line 😂
I ALWAYS ran Cherry Bomb glasspacks on my GTO i do love the sound!!
I have thrush cherry bombs on my old 95 302 h.o. it sounds pretty awesome.
Right, lol???
I run Cherry bomb Vortex they have a nice sound not too loud until you get on it and it opens up
Neat, money money money.
Awesome video! Love the way you guys do your videos. And also keep the awesome weird stuff coming Motown! Always wanted to do this same kind of thing…
Well considering a sbc block only cost me $200, same for a LS. Would be hard for me to justify $3300 for a block.
@@stephenhodge6441 First Gen Camaros also had steering components behind the crossmember, making oil pan clearance another issue.
The problem is not the idea, the problem is the cost.
Crazy to build this caliber of engine with a cast iron timing gear, i dont even use them in stock engines anymore since ive found 3 cam gears cracked with nothing more than a valve spring upgrade. Luckily they chose to do a cam change soon after spring upgrade
I go with the pro comp timing belt setup it's bullit proof stuff with adjustments for different degrees
@@richardfinney3179 what do you do with your engines, drag race, street or?? Been looking at PC belt drives but if the quality matches most of their off shore junk i dont thing i will be willing to trust one on drag n drive events where the cars need reliability
What would be the bill for a kit like this. Everything you have shown? Thanks much. I thought by now one of the head manufacturer would have come up with dual over cam heads? Would take some extra machine work to mount a cam drive system but could be maybe de stronger than a coyote. Thanks for this video.
Now this is a awesome setup. But can you hookup say alt p/s and a/c to it with factory mountain brackets???
I'm not the only one that heard it knocking like a jw on Saturday morning, am i?
Accessories, accessories. I would have put those adapter plates near the rear of the motor and snuck a return pipe under the manifold attached to that valley cover. Why... I might even be able to stick with oem radiator hoses. This build could put alternator and power steering down low but I want my air conditioning - damn the critics!
36👍's up HP thanks again for taking us all along with you
I KNEW they had built one of these. Of course people said I was stupid but I have been a PowerBlock fan since before they were ever called PowerBlock.
I remembered too, but this was a different displacement. The other was a 440ci. Motown II LS for the Triple Threat Camaro build.
There is a Tesla crate motor that will fit anywhere a SB Chevy will.
Man! A SBC with LS heads. YESSSSSS.
No exaggeration , those Pro system SV-1 single blade carbs are super Snappy, i have heard transmission input shafts snapping and driveshafts breakage. An incredible part. Note this airing of episode was 2010 i have learned from the comments below.
A lot of seams in that coolant crossover and where does the belt-drive go?
I haven't seen anything like that at car shows at all wonder how well them sold
They do all these projects but never fess up to what it all costs. For the price of the special block and crank along with the rods pistons cam and lifters, you could probably build at least two 600 hp LS motors to put that set of LS heads on.
Looked it up, $2,600ish. Big ole yikes. You could make a junkyard monster for that.
@@yeanah2571 this is more of a circle track endurance engine to be ran hard for a whole season before freshened up not really a budget dragracing engine hence the low compression JE Pistons made to run all night without seeing the south side of 5000rpm unless your under caution or loading it on the trailer
I built one it ant cheap
You could just build a 500 hp old school 350 for cheaper then this
Yeah I'm clueless cuz I'm not a car guy I just like Beauty in the cars and the people that have the passion that's cool but I have no idea what things cost because you know I drive a fucking Toyota. It gets me where I need to get I want to drive to New Orleans for the weekend no problem
You could buy a junkyard 6.0, put a cam in it and get the same numbers.
The glass pack is the loudest. Run it for a bit and the fiberglass blows out and it becomes a straight pipe. Alternatively pour some gas in it and light it to burn off the fiberglass before installing.
fiber glass doest burn its a fct the steel wool does fiberglass is fire proof as you can get if a fiber glass boat burns you literally could wash the fiber glass and lay up the same boat again!
Easy roller cam conversion by just using the cam and lifter kit on any old 350 block you might have in your backyard. 🤔🤔
I mean.. u can put the ls in just about anything old school with 50 dollar adaptor plates lol but... this is cool as shit lol
you know people used to make kits that made a Fiero look like a Lamborghini or a Ferrari? I'm making kits that make Lamborghinis and Ferraris look like a Fiero.
Is it just me or is the lifters already tapping? Lmao
Your Right Mike White Ticking Time B
They sure are I saw the puff of smoke then they started a tap, tap tapin' lol.
Wrong pushrod length
@@GearheadOutlaw that or rocker ratio. SBC can be adjusted on fly LS is 1 shot.
Let me guess you support the corner cutter.
I love that small block
So how much is this build? And does it really meet the rule for the old SBC? I’m guessing if it does today and people start getting beat by it it will be written out of the rules
Disturb the peace, I wonder how much that engine cost
Probably 10,000
Too much to be worth while when a ls has better engineering in total
More than a low mileage ly6 would cost
@@bigboreracing356 my ass is clean and what i have is a positive criticism. To buy a " special " sbc block to use with LS heads sounds about as bad as those lifters . I already have a built 350 which 350's aren't stock for 80's monte carlo's. With that said any time i order something i have to be careful if i do it online with the whole this does or doesn't fit yr car. I can't imagine trying to order stuff on the fly for this . Especially if you want to change brands. If it was a kit to fit any 350 that would be a whole different ball game. Just saying
About 3 times as much making 1/3 the power as a turbo 5.3 lmao
An sbc with Ls heads is a great idea until you realize you can't mount accessories with the coolant crossovers in place.
Pitch Meeting guy: whoops
Pitch Meeting exec: whoopsie
This is a custom milled block, nothing really says gen1 about it anymore
I agree that's the only downside, the guys who designed it forgot to design the Coolant system for the Thermostat housing. Still be a Interesting conversation at a car show when Ya open the bonnet
That big single blade carb reminds me of an old predator single
This is a really great hybrid engine.
I get the impression that it's just weird for the sake of being weird, which is fine but kinda spendy.
@@177SCmaro True.
Is there one a single piece of that CF you've built that will fit either Chevy small block that you're calling a hybrid??????
I knew it, I knew it! Someone was going to do this!!
15 years ago.. yep they did it
I had this 66' Bel Air station wagon with a vortec head swapped 327. I took it on down to the local muffler monkey & handed him a pair of single chambers and to install full 3" exhaust exciting behind the rear tires. How loud could it possibly be ???
I'll tell you this brother...ever been to a cackle fest ??? Holy Crap !!! & We had one hour to check the car in at Street Rods North (NSRA) we had to put on hearing protection just to drive it down the highway !!!!
Learned my lesson 😆
I have long wondered how modern engines can get away with skirtless pistons. What keeps them from trying cock left and right?
Interesting, just wish, with these types of builds, they would include the costs. I realize that Labour can be subjective and can vary from location to location, but it would be nice, when they put these beasts together, to have a Cost, even breakdown, so us plebes could get a better appreciation of where we stand. Is it UnObtanium with a Dash of Not Gonna Happen? Or is it within the realm of possibilities, if I eat Macaroni for a year to scrape up the dough to make it happen.
Wellll...........the bare block is $3400 for starters.
I love love love the sbc. But I seriously don't see the point to this custom block.
You get a little more crank shaft choices
Looking good bud if you get bored we have an event down here in Montana June 27th
Powerful combination 👊🏾💪🏾💯
Forgot how old this episode is. We don't have to do this to run a dizzy on an LS anymore.
It’s an Engine, fellows ! NOT a motor !
Nothing in common with the old SBC but alot in common with a and 351w. Thrust bearing in the center, equal length ports, and same head design with 10 headbolts. I work at a machine shop for a living so I know.
The breathing characteristics come from ford
That's a nice Holly predator
AWESOME ENGINUIEDY GREAT JOB 👍 GUYS
I'd guess the Gen 1 SBC lower end would be worth around 25-30hp, due to the LS engine having issues with bay to bay breathing.
Can a person use Chevy Small Block exhaust on a Gen 3 or Gen 4 4.8L, 5.3L, or 6.0L LS engine? I just located a Schoenfeld 180 degree headers for the small block chevy.
No it would be LS headers.
To everybody asking why? Because of horsepower losses from oil windage. A LS deep skirt is far superior for strength, esp under forced air, but the air and oil doesntt move around as well. This setup is extremely niche', purpose built, class rules beating that actually works. But for 99.999% of the enthusiast, it is pointless
Please explain how you three-quarter pipe a 10 bolt head put on 17 head bolt block
as a Happy Gen 1 owner (358ci, .600" solid roller, knife edge crank/aluminum rods, ported 492 angle plug heads/port matched intake, 12+ to 1 Comp.). Mine was dirt cheap compared to this hybrid (it is a sweet sbc), seems like a lot of expense for a 10% 0r so gain, still good info. (mines in a 2350lbs MGB street car)
Looks like you can get to the lifters without taking the heads off. A great advantage for racing.
Nope. Those heads got to come off to remove the valley cover. It would be great if we could have that ability.
Will a top end kit with cam work on a 91 "tbi" chevy 350 block? Are the 70s, TBI's, and LS blocks the same? I know the vortec heads and intake are different, but are the blocks the same?
LS blocks only have one thing in common with SBC blocks, that is the transmission bolt pattern, and even then there is one hiole you can't use.
@@fryloc359 Thanks for that info! I think I will rebuild my 91 tbi 350 block, and put a top end kit on it for my K1500.
@@fryloc359 My block is a 1991 GMC tbi 350, not an LS. I think I can rebuild the bottom end, and put a top end kit on it with new cam, heads, and intake. I believe I just need to find out how to attach the accessory mounts, and water pump specifically.
Hello how about a parts list on your builds?
With part numbers so we can duplicate the motor..
Thank you
Dan
its on their website
Should be epic with a small journal crankshaft.
Can someone explain to me what they are doin when using the strobe light on the balancer/damper... I obviously understand it has to do with timing but what exactly is going on there?
they are checking the timing to see when #1 plug fires. Usually there is a mark on the balancer where #1 is at TDC, and another set of pointers that indicate TDC, 2 degrees BTDC, 4 * BTDC, etc.
