  • Pawpaws are my secret go to fruit. In fact you may have never heard of them, but pawpaws are a fruit you should have in your permaculture garden. These aren't the kind of fruits you can buy in a store, in fact I don't know of a place that I can ever buy them. The only way to for me to eat pawpaws is if I grow them myself!
Thanks for the kind words and support 😁🐕❤️

As a First Nations person from canada thank you everyone for replanting these trees across the US and Canada, it was heart breaking when the american Chestnut was almost wiped out, and when the Scycamores and Redwoods almost went extinct too due to the lumber industry. Keep planting native species everyone :)

I just planted two little paw paws in my back yard. I just learned that the Zebra Swallowtail butterfly larvae depend on paw paw leaves as their main source of food. Paw paws fill an important niche in the natural world of which we are a part. These trees are surely a gift from mother earth. Thanks for your post!

Just LOVE fresh ripe Paw Paw fruit. We live in Maryland and kayak up and down the Eastern seaboard where we often find wonderful ripe Paw Paw along our paddles! They thrive in the shady moist under story areas in our region AND provide leaves for the gorgeous Zebratail butterflies whose caterpillars feed exclusively on Paw Paw leaves. I recall in the Autumn of 2017 when we paddled near Mattawoman Creek in Southern Maryland and landed on a shaded beach with Paw Paws falling all over! An hour later, with our sacks full of ripe Paw Paw fruit, we headed home happy! Paw Paw is like the best tastes and flavors of warm banana and mango and papaya in one spoonful.

Here in Australia we have related butterflies called the "green triangle butterfly" and the "pale blue triangle' that lay their eggs on our custard apples. I'm super keen to see if my new pawpaw trees get used as a foodplant for the same butterflies. In Papua they have the beautiful "purple spotted swallowtail" that lays eggs on the custard apples so I'll get to test out the pawpaw with that one too :)

James -- I am IN LOVE with Paw Paws!!! I grew up on my grandparents farm in southern Indiana and we had a Paw Paw forest! They were plentiful in the fall and we would eat our weight in the fruit! When I was little Grandpa and I would have seed contests to see who could spit the seed the furthest. And at the same time we were contributing to building the forest. After graduation, I moved to Ohio and through the years I tried many, many times to transplant seedlings from the farm to my home, but none ever made it more than 6 months. But, happy to say I have a 3 year old tree now and it's growing well. I don't know what the variety is, but I garden a lot and hope it is enough to pollinate my beloved tree. I am a misplaced Hoosier gal and no one in the state of Ohio that I have come to know, realize the Paw Paw is this state's fruit. Except for those folks in southern Ohio near Snowden Lake. Those folks can grow Paw Paws and they celebrate their gems at an annual festival in September. I could go on and on with my love and stories of Paw Paws... I am more appreciative of your channel and what you do and who you are. I respect your passion for growing good food and protecting mother nature along the way. Thank you for sharing your experiences. I think you are terrific and my Grandpa would have been proud to have met you. And Tuck, too!

I can't believe that this healthy fruit is so unknown and not sold fresh seasonally like other fruits and veggies. Aww, silly Humans! I will now be on a quest to find this tree on Long Island

The main reason they aren't sold like others is because they bruise easily and they don't last more than just a few days at most once they are ripe. This makes shipping them EXTREMELY difficult.

I place 55gal drums of rendered grease from restaurants, under my paw paw grove. As the BSF waits to lay eggs, they taxi into the blossoms and pollinate the heck out of my trees. Super sweet Tappahannock varietal from Northern Neck. The more times a ovary is “kissed” by a pollinator, the Brix skyrockets.

About 4 year's ago I discovered a couple cluster's at our new homestead and didn't know what they were and didn't get them and later found out we have pawpaw trees on a bluff. Now I know I was lucky that I even saw those 2 small cluster's because every I think I'm going to have a bumper crop and get to try pawpaw's and so far late frost destroys the bloom's and I find them brown and dead. I've got to figure a way to protect the blooms next year. I'm miffed that these early warm springs are causing my trees to bud and bloom too early and then a cold stretch happens and freezes the blooms and maybe some very small fruit cluster's and I'm in Kentucky. Nice looking pawpaw tree with lots of fruit you have there.👍

Black flies are the primary pollinator for pawpaws. I mulched a lot of vegetable scraps when I had chickens a few years ago. The mulch would get black flies. My pawpaws would get so much fruit they would almost break branchs. Chickens loved the black fly larvae.

We have pawpaw trees all over in West Virginia. We've made pawpaw bread out of them but removing the seeds tedious. If your trees flower before the bees become active you'll have to attract flies to pollinate them.

Don't know if you're a drinking man, but I can tell you that Pawpaws make excellent wine, one of the best batches of wine I have ever made was a Pawpaw Dandelion wine, I didn't even need to add yeast, as there is plenty of yeast on the skin of the Pawpaws, don't wash them, remove the pits, but I love this fruit and the things that can be done with it.
