Here's how to use this video to its optimum: watch it once just looking at the video. Then, sit with your bike and follow along with what he's saying. Finally, watch it with tools and do what he's saying. You'll get a lot out of it if you just take your time and move slowly rather than getting freaked out. Soon enough, you'll have a working derailleur and being able to do it on your own next time. That is the sign of an informative video!
I used to watch so many guides about this and they never really worked out perfectly. They always had left some steps away or didnt explain it as good as this did. The 1mm on lowest gear advice was the best possible and now my bike shifts as good as possible! I almost gave up and went to a mechanic, thanks for saving me a few pennies
Thank you! You made my first bike repair possible! I just got a new Trek as my first road bike and the chain was rubbing the front derailleur when I shifted into the highest gear. Followed your instructions and it’s fixed!
This video is so much better than the others because it explains the tension settings while making the adjustments. This is what kept screwing me up. Sometimes it would move too far, and other times it wouldn’t move at all. I figured it was a tension thing but starting out with none and then moving on helped me to dial it in. Thanks!
I watched a million front derailleur videos, and this was the most concise and easiest to understand. Park Tools video is also good but the clockwise visuals in this video I believe is what helped me ultimately.
Thank you so much! Race tomorrow and the LBS' adjustments made the front derailleur rub the top of the derailleur cage. Thanks to your video I was able to make at least the necessary adjustments tonight before the race!
Yes! Forget all the rest this video is simple and straightforward. I was ready to go into the shop and wait a week but decided to try one more video. I’m glad this was the one I chose. My old Ultegra is back to buttery smooth shifting. Thank you very much!
MJ, Thanks a bunch. I had some cable stretch going on causing poor shifting. After your videos, moving my bike from trainer to rides up and down the block and back to trainer a couple times my Ultegra 11 is shifting like Butta! Saved me a trip to the bike hop!
To be honest this vid is very useful,I followed his directions and I love it how simple he explains it, now shifting is now flawless thanks to this guy
Saved me a trip to the bike shop. Only thing I would add is it helps to loosen both H-L adjustment screws for full reset to max range of motion. Then tighten clockwise as needed
Absolutely great video explaining everything I needed for the front derailleur! I would recommend this video to anyone! Thank you so very much for taking the time to post this video. My front derailleur was rubbing the chain and this gave me all the information I needed to fix it. A+ would watch again.
Messed it up last year, but my lsb soon sorted it all out for a fee...... Needed a quick tune this year and wow its so easy after watching this video. The key for me was reducing any slack with bail adjuster. Great video!!!!!
My absolute favourite video if ever I need to refresh my derailluer knowledge. Been back to this vid multiple times. Sweet and to the point, cheers dude!
Learned a lot from this. Muted sound and only saw graphics and boy it makes more sense to me rather than the narrator explaining how everything works especially the screws direction which I'm a big dummy at. Good job!
other than the occasional focus work, this was really informative REALLY consice, and I was very pleased to see the annotations [instead of fingers or tools] to help show the guidelines, and what I should be looking at. as well as showing what can go wrong, like the chain flopping off of the high gear. great video! my cheepo mongoose from walmart came with a rediculous ammount of extra slack in the front shifter cable. so...being spent, I need to do this myself. a lot of videos don't cover the front gears, at all!
Thanks for posting this video ! I have now got my front derailleur working really sweet now . I've watched a few of these vids but yours really got through to me and finally now I feel I have got the grasp of the front derailleur adjustment. Awesome !!!
I work in a bike shop, but work in sales. it's hard to get the service guys to work on my bike because they are either too busy with customers' bikes, or they snark at me and tell me to learn to fix my own bike. LOL. So, I spent an hour working on my front derailleur after replacing the cable, and still not right. After watching this video, I see where I made my mistakes and now feel confident to hack at it again tomorrow. Thanks, guys! Very easy to understand video. And the six pack: TRUE
You guys have the best videos! I just assembled a Jamis Icon Pro and your videos helped immensely to walk me through it. Thanks and keep up the good work, much appreciated!
I had a replacement front derailleur and took my bike to a bike shop today. Next available service time would have been at the end of this month. That's right too far away so I decided to do it myself. I found your video and installed derailleur myself in no time. So thanks a lot. More useful videos like these to youtube. Chears :D!
This is probably the best video I've seen of a bunch. I think the best bike to demonstrate would be a triple crank, because you would actually be doing the middle chain ring adjustment. The best advice I have for adjusting the front shifting ? Just start over as if the bike was a brand new build and it was the first time the components were assembled.
Buy a 6 packs to my mechanic? Here in Australia the Bastards they charge you 50 bucks for a 10 min job setting your shift gear. Screw these thieves. I need to learn myself on how to do it! ......Thanks you just saved me 50 bucks.
always wondered about those top/bottom adjustment screws but didn't dare touch em incase i screwed things up, now i know how and after adjusting the front on the road bike its loads better, gonna do the MTB one next!! thanks for this vid its been very useful!!
after watching this video i think it helped me understand the front derailleur a little better, recently i had to take mine off, i had the shifter for it lock up, but because i have my handle bar extension's next to the shifter , it was not allowing it to down shift
This is a great straight to the point video. I have been trying to fine tune my new front derailleur for awhile now and this video made it happen. Thanks!
Well Done just was messing up with mine Front deraillieur for a while after I followed your video I was able to set it up very good in 10 min, went out to test it ,works fantastic . THANKS A LOT , WISH ALL THE BEST .
I wanted to make my own video after seeing so many videos that did not explain all the steps until I saw this video! You may want to add in this point; On the low limit, adjust the deraileur slightly more than 1mm from the chain and when tightening the barrel adjuster, the deraileur will move very slightly in towards the chain to make it 1mm. This will give the cable very good tension needed for high limit adjustment.
I like the "be patient" part. I'll give it another try. lol. (BTW, I remember, YEARS AGO back in the 60's, when a friend suggested that someday you could work on your car or bike using DIY instructions from a computer. I thought that was unlikely, and joked something like "Call me when you can put the computer on your fender and watch the video." Well, here we are, more or less. It is amazing when you think about it.)
Now that is one thing have not done yet- lube on front derailleur- years of no lube on my FD- have not done that since I bought my bike- its doing great and have forgotten about it, just kept on using it when climbing hills until today it wont shift, maybe that will solve my FD's problem :-) Thanks for sharing..
Thank you for such information. I have those type of problems and I am in a rural area. My bike is just unridable at all at all coz of derailer problems. Now I can fix it myself, thank you so much.
Kudos on the vid instructions--truly among the best out there. I finally figured out that all I needed to do was crack a Stone at the end. I feel so much better now!
What ever happened to the gear cable replacement video? These are the best videos I have seen. Please keep them coming! Also, sweetsbench domain is no longer active as a website. Keep em coming. TWSS.
Great video, lot of other videos out there make it super complicated, I like how your steps are simple, like bring the deraiuler right to the chain, then back it off a couple mm!
Great tutorial, thanks! I did find describing the lower limit screw as turning clockwise means "moves in" a little confusing. I would have thought "moves in" means "closer to the bike" but you mean "closer to the inner side of the chain". So your point of reference is the inner of the chain. On the upper limit you then reverse your point of reference to the outer of the chain. This is an inconsistent point of reference, the point of reference should be the bike in both cases. Otherwise very will explained.
What's the best front mec? No front mec! Lol Bought a bike out of the box and when built the front mech was not in line. I went gung ho into adjusting the front mec with racing shifters thinking I knew what I was doing. Mistake! I couldn't shift down. I followed this tutorial and now everything works great. Great vid.
Thanks guys! I was able to get my derailleur working correctly after watching this vid. I might have a friend look it over once before starting to use this bike for touring but at least I can reach my highest gear disk now! CHEERS! *insert sound of opening a beer*
Great fast talking video. Very helpful. Two minor complaints for future videos and anyone else coming across this that has a little trouble following along 0. Not really the a problem with the video, but it's easier to do this with the bike upside down if you don't have a stand 1. There doesn't seem to be any mention that the chain should be put on the smallest chain ring of the front set of gears when you're aligning and setting the height of the derailleur cage 2. At 1:40, the cable is reattached to the derailleur when at this point in the instructions it's supposed to be detached
I thought I did everything right (the low limits, high limits, the 1mm rule) and i still couldnt shift up. What solved the problem, the chain lube on the pivot points! A great tutorial
I'm looking a this glamorous Hollywood style put on to remember how to readjust my bike. Cause it needs it again .inspite of the fact that I suspect these are actors, maybe. Real bike mechanics who do how to videos are dingy, but this video hit the point of adjusting in spite of possible actors, who know how to fix bikes
Very educational. Wondering how to do barrel adjustment for a bike with internally routed cables that has the barrel adjuster somewhat closer to the handlebars
My frontshifter is touching my chain in last 2 back box gears i have 3x9 gears. Should i just adust high limit on frontshifter? Also 1 more question i use WD-40 for chain for shifters for cables etc. Is it ok? I am scared cuz my frontshifter shimano deore had play exacly what u said at 1:15. Sry for bad eng i hope u understand it and hope u will ansver. Tnx
Some set ups are going to rub a little in either the high or low limit, no matter how much you adjust it. If it rubs only in the big ring (up front), then try moving your high limit out a little more. If it rubs in the middle or small ring, then tighten your cable a little more. (This is for highest gears = smallest cogs in rear). Check to make sure your low limit is as close to the chain as possible also.
Hey, I just used your video to replace my front derailleur cable and it was super helpful. Thanks a lot! I wanted to ask you one more thing which is not covered in your video. Those two little screws that are meant to adjust low and high limit seem to be almost completely tightened on your bike. On my bike one of those screws is sticking out half the way. It doesn't seem loose but I am afraid that I might loose it bcz of vibrations when I ride my bike. So, my question is: is there an initial position in which those two little screws must be set and what is it? Thnx.
Two things (1) The words that appear on screen in relation to moving the LOWER adjustment screw are the wrong way round. The arrows are, however, correct. In other words, turning the lower limit screw clockwise moves the deraileur out (ie. away from the frame; turning it counterclockwise moves it in (towards the frame). (2) The video is mostly shot from the rear of the bike. However, the close-ups are shot from the front of the bike (in the close-ups the pedal crank is on the left) which is an inconsistent and confusing approach.
You might be right that it has to do with the front chainrings, but not because they are worn or anything - I hammered them out to perfection - but because they're of the Bio-Pace kind where they're more oval than round. Besides they don't seem to sell the gearlevers that has that "Click-into-position" function for every gear around here (sweden), the ones I had and the ones I bought after are stepless, they make it so much harder to tune the shifting action.
I had an old Ultegra set up and changed the Ultegra cranks for some newer 105 because the Ultegra crank arms were a bit too long for my old legs. I then find that both inner and outer ring settings are way too near the frame. I can just about bring the inner out to be 1 mm shy of the chain in the lowest gear on the small front chainring but the outer adjustment screw did not bring the dérailleur nearly to the outer. I tried tightening the wire by using an axe handle to force the dérailleur out then re-tightening the wire but doing so as far as it seems to go, it is still not enough to change up. Is it likely that my front dérailleur needs to be replaced?
Here's how to use this video to its optimum: watch it once just looking at the video. Then, sit with your bike and follow along with what he's saying. Finally, watch it with tools and do what he's saying. You'll get a lot out of it if you just take your time and move slowly rather than getting freaked out. jafrocubic2 Great idea! So simple and obvious, like all the best ideas are. Thanks.
Thanks, I spent hours on adjusting it, but no luck

*Great bike for the price, **Latest.Bike** shifts well. Needed to fine tune gears and brakes. The big tires seem to mow over anything.*

I have always made little adjustments, but the front never seemed to work right. Your video was simple as anything and worked perfect!!
Well done, thank you. Of particular note, your graphic/animation was very handy too. Cheers!
after watching this video i think it helped me understand the front derailleur a little better, recently i had to take mine off, i had the shifter for it lock up, but because i have my handle bar extension's next to the shifter , it was not allowing it to down shift
Should've watch this before I went to the bike shop. They didn't fix the problem and it still cost me 40$ Thank you guys.
For anyone without repair stand, I used a bike rack on the back of a car. Worked a treat!
This is a great straight to the point video. I have been trying to fine tune my new front derailleur for awhile now and this video made it happen. Thanks!

THANKS A LOT , WISH ALL THE BEST .
Why did these guys stop making videos? These are some of the best bike maintenance videos on UA-cam.
Got a lot out of this brief video!! And finally understand when to use the trim function. I thought something was up with my shifting...
0:34 equipment check
1:20 placement and adjustment
2:01 low limit screw
2:23 cable tension
3:23 high limit screw
Great video, best one I've seen yet for the front derailleur! Much thanks.

Guys I set my new mech up in minutes watching that video! The best and clearest no fuss explanation!!!
I chose your video because it was the shortest. Glad I did.
Well structured, well shot, well edited and 100% helpful. Very, very nice tutorial!
Kudos on the vid instructions--truly among the best out there. I finally figured out that all I needed to do was crack a Stone at the end. I feel so much better now!
This is the clearest video explaining this! Thanks!
These videos are really helpful. All the info in a short accessible video. Thanks!
What ever happened to the gear cable replacement video? These are the best videos I have seen. Please keep them coming! Also, sweetsbench domain is no longer active as a website.

Love the six pack option!
Thanks fellas, I have been so frustrated adjusting my front derailleur. but not anymore.
Great video, lot of other videos out there make it super complicated, I like how your steps are simple, like bring the deraiuler right to the chain, then back it off a couple mm!
Thank you, really straight forward without explaining the meaning of life.
MJ Sweet? Wow ! A rapper and a bike repairman!
Great tutorial, thanks! I did find describing the lower limit screw as turning clockwise means "moves in" a little confusing. Great vid.
Thank you for showing how to adjust the front derailleur..
With this tips I will save some money over the time, not having to bring my bike to repair shop :) Thanks!
Best roadbike front gear tutorial
Would watch again. Will definitely need to.
Thank you, your video help me put a free Jamis XRail back on the road.
well done video. no time wasting, useful overlays.
Pro production quality with a creative touch, thanks.
Thanks. My Derailleur is shifting smoothly now.
Thanks guys! I was able to get my derailleur working correctly after watching this vid. I might have a friend look it over once before starting to use this bike for touring but at least I can reach my highest gear disk now!
CHEERS! *insert sound of opening a beer*
Awesome job guys! .. Just wanted to check with you is the high limit should be adjusted when the rear derailleur is on the smallest cog wheel?
Great fast talking video. Very helpful. Two minor complaints for future videos and anyone else coming across this that has a little trouble following along
0. Not really the a problem with the video, but it's easier to do this with the bike upside down if you don't have a stand

Thanks a lot. I was on trip and something happened so I never had done this by myself. Thank you
That's actually the most important step to the whole process. I'm really glad to hear it helped! Thanks for the comment
The Biopace chainrings made this more painful to adjust. Thanks for your expert advice and video!
Good clear, and concise. Liked this.
These vids are excellent, everything you need from a tutorial
Thanks, took me a couple of videos and clickbaits to find your video that was helpful
I thought I did everything right (the low limits, high limits, the 1mm rule) and i still couldnt shift up. What solved the problem, the chain lube on the pivot points! A great tutorial
how can you switch your rear gears into the high range when you have disconnected the rear cable ?
Man you just saved me a WHOLE lot of stamina thank you!
Thank you! Solved my 4 hours problem in 5 minutes!
yep..another clear video from you guys. nice work!
Tnx
I have the exakt same question actually (front deraiuler touching chain when I have it on my last 2 gears on the rear deraiuler)
Thanks to your video i can assemble my new cycle
Thnx.
Massive thanks. My gears all run so sweet now
worked like a charm after this vid and with a first try! thanks!
Awww, that's awesome - informative and entertaining as hell! Thanks!
Best video to explain this procedure!!
Fantastic demo. Thanks for posting.
You guys videos are great. Keep up the good work!! Looking forward to more vids. Got anything in the works for front and rear shocks??
This worked so well for me. Thanks
This video came in very handy thank you so much.
perfect explanation how to do it; best i have seen
Thank you thank you vert much i all new To road bikes and I taught that I had a defect because my bike has 3 shifting positions and just 2positions
What chainring should the chain be on during the adjustment? I have three chainrings up front. Thanks.
Great video,... informative and entertaining as hell thanks
This is a great instruction video for beginners..
