    Guitarist here.. there’s really no reason a guitarist can’t tune up or down for brass guys… within a few steps anyway. Guitars easily tune down to D (many bands will use Drop-D or full D on guitars regularly). Tuning up to F or F# is super easy and safe to do as well. G as well.

    This video coming in clutch I was just playing a jam session and the guitarists kept calling key of E. I'll practice this so I can keep up with E next week.

      Need to do the same - it's just too much to ask a guitar player of that kind for another key than E, B or Amaj.

    When I started playing my saxes again, I made a priority of being comfortable with C# & F#, but around here the keyboardists like to play in Ab a lot. That puts me into Bb and F quite a bit. It's even more fun on clarinet!

    Playing in F# on tenor has become like my native tongue. I was just looking over my band’s set list for next week. “Crazy Momma” dropped to E, “Blue Monday” dropped to A. The guitar keys.
    Earlier this week, I packed my tenor into a jam/band practice that a local funk band hosts monthly. Two months ago, I packed in my bari, and that attracted a lot of attention, but I had tweaked my back earlier in the week, so I wanted to carry in just the lighter horn.
    The band launched into some songs I knew, like “Late in the Evening”, and “Knock on Wood”, and more songs I didn’t know. On some songs, I had a chance to look a someone’s iPad at the chords, on other songs, the lead guitar player would just say something like “It’s an original. In Eb, so you’ll be OK” I said “Eb? How many guitar players want to play in Eb?” But the lead guitar player said “Eb is good for horns, right?” They have a trumpet player, so it’s good for him, I suppose. I’m so used to playing with guitar players who love E and A that I have gotten good at playing in F# and B on tenor. My little brain was going “F so there’s Bb, and the flatted third is G# (Ab)and the sub dominant is B? No! Bb! Dominant is C? Yes!” Should be easy, but not for me. I’d get a nod to step up for a solo and it was like jumping off a cliff. Need more practice improvising in concert Eb. Sometimes, I’d hit a C# by accident, and my little brain was going, “No sharps, no sharps, oh, I kind of like this sharp 5th. I’m going to lay on it like that’s what I meant to play!”
    I felt like I had been floundering at times, but both the trumpet player and the band leader said they hoped I could sit in with them on a gig this Sunday. And the two young female singers really chatted me up. “It’s not much money and it’s a long drive, but it should be good exposure.” It didn’t sound that great to me. I told them “No thanks. I needed to stay close to home. My back is tweaked and my wife broke her shoulder in early June.” So, it’s come to that? More offers than I want? Turning down gigs?

    guitar player here. I love playing in Bflat and F keys especially when playing with horns. also love ANY other key. when I'm asked to sing the tune, then you gotta play it in the key I can sing it in. when other players complain about key changes, I just tell 'em all the notes are right there in front of you.....

    Play every key on the saxophone I don't think of keys I think of chromaticism play in any key automatically think of the horn as one big chromatic mechanism mindset

    Hi question for you Sir. I was wondering if you have any advise for us multi-instrumentalists out there in the world. I am a conservatory trained guitarist and decided to pick up the Tenor saxophone later in life. In early 2023, I started as a true beginner, but I'm quickly climbing towards that still lonely low-intermediate level after a few months of effort. I have some advantages such as knowledge of theory, sight reading ability, timing, etc. I suppose my question would be 1) who are some sax players who are easy to transcribe for us beginners and 2) how would you recommend allocating practice time so my guitar chops don't diminish in the process. Also, any recommendations for practicing quietly?

    • @Sirvalorsax
      @Sirvalorsax  7 місяців тому

      Gene Ammons is a great start. As for practicing, learning songs is always a winner because it doesn't feel like practicing and I would suggest using a low tip opening mouthpiece for playing quieter

    Technically speaking, for the transposing woodwinds (say Bb tenor saxophone and Bb clarinet), wouldn't a transposition from the E concert key be better to be played in the "flat key" of Gb and not in the "sharp key" of F#? Guitar players prefer "sharp keys" notations (more natural for them, considering how the guitar is played), but not the woodwinds.

    Guitar players having preferred keys are bloody beginners. I think there is only drums besides guitars where the key matters less - out of other reasons of course, but c'mon! Transposing on guitar is just a shift of everything while keeping the same technique. They don't need to practice a certain scale in 12 keys but just in one. Guitar players insisting on E, B or Amaj are pissing me off. I used to play guitar long enough to know what im talking about. There are just a few licks and some tappings depending on open strings and certain keys. But that stuff isn't recommendable to play with while jamming with others. Greetings from my Hammond organs. We pianists prefer C, F, G and all the black keys. We hate E and B

      I play guitar, totally agree and never play E, B and A in my jazz band... but classic rock? You're on guitar players' turf 😂

      Joe Viola, my sax teacher at Berklee, made me do countless exercises in those whacky keys. It still feels like I am just not as "fluent" in those keys.One day, talking with my friend Candy Dulfer, she said the same.
