    Scott your altissimo is just incredible. I can't play that high yet I can occasionally get out a G but I can play high F#.Sanborn is the reason I started playing his tone and unmistakable split tones are out of this world. Thanks for sharing your incredible knowledge to help students of any age

      Hey Dave! Congrats on getting the G. With altissimo, usually after you get that first note it becomes pretty easy to add one note at a time. Yeah, Sanborn had a huge impact on me as well.

      Sanborn s version of Georgia on my mind is killer too. I met Sanborn several times in Glenside Pa just out side Philly at the Keswick theater. After the show I would talk to Ricky Peterson (always smoking outside😉)in the back of the theater where they load the tour bus. Sanborn was so cool he autographed all my CD’s etc.. super nice guy, very humble.

    Excellent breakdown, as usual...
    Your altissimos during the tutorial are super 👌 clear, bright and accurate.
    Dave's the man; his early influence with the altissimos was said to have been that of King Curtis and, to a lesser extent, Junior Walker, Jr.
    Scott, at your convenience, I will appreciate a breakdown on Junior Walker's "HOT CHA" - the altissimos, how he was able to climb, placing each *altissimo in melodic context, as well as during his improvisation.
    (*That was on tenor saxophone; I assume the technique on alto sax may be a little different - just maybe)
    Keep educating, inspiring and motivating us all!
    Thanks, champion.

    Great video. I got a question, when growling on the altissimo g and/or a, do you try to do a split tone by overblowing or do you just hum up there?

    • @ScottPaddock
      @ScottPaddock  Рік тому +1

      A split tone is basically a growl in the altissimo. The notes are so much closer together up there, that you can hear the pitch of the notes fighting more clearly. I did a video about growling and split tones, check it out. It breaks down exactly how to do it. But the short answer is that it is more of a hum.

  • @walterlee2439
    @walterlee2439 9 місяців тому

    Your an amazing teacher. Been working on my altissimo notes this year. So far I have hit A2 all the way up to D4. The challenge now for me now is on the fluidity of playing the notes consecutively clean or jumping from one note to the other in terms of licks and phrases and in solos. Sanborn too was my inspiration to take up the saxophone. He's rendition of "You are everything" and fills and expressions in Randy Crawford's "Knocking on heavens door" is the class soul and smooth!
    I love the way you do the breakdown of the solo. Awesome stuff! Have a question on those scoops up and down. How do we get them so clean? Also can you do a break down on Sanborns split tones he usually creates?

    • @ScottPaddock
      @ScottPaddock  9 місяців тому

      Hey Walter - thanks for the kind words. Yeah, I'm a huge David Sanborn fan as well. Those split tones are actually pretty easy, just growl when you are doing an altissimo note and it will turn into a split tone. I did a tutorial on - just search split tone on my channel

      Hey Thor! Yeah, Tom Scott would be awesome he has sooooooooooo many iconic recordings to choose from. Yeah, I have 2 of those tall stands. They are great! Very secure, they fit alto, tenor, and C melody. However, they are really heavy so you wouldn't want to cart them around that much, but they are perfect for setting up in your house/practice space.
