In this video I give an in depth look at the Okuma Komodo SS family of reels. These things are just plain awesome. Completely built from ground up for extreme saltwater use. With all stainless steel internal components and an extra rigid diecast aluminum frame and side plates, these reels are built for the fight getting up to 30lbs of pure fish stopping drag.
I also take a look at the soon to be released 200 sized Komodo SS built for the serious inshore fisherman. Same stainless steel and aluminum components, this dude is going to be awesome!

3:35 -- I own both the 200 size and the 450 size. The reels are built tough but only thr 200 size has a true disengaging levelwind (which greatly helps with casting distance).
The 350- and 450- sizes have permanently engaged levelwinds which, unfortunately, reduce your ability to cast smaller lures and live baits. These reels would be KILLER if they all had true disengaging levelwinds.
Good review man. But the music was over powering your voice.
Thank you for checking it out. One of my early videos. I e tried to tone it down since. I appreciate the feedback. 👍
Nice in-depth look Dave!
Sweet looking reels
Jamie Nichols They are pretty slick!
Great review, thx!
Thank you Ish!
Power handle a must....without it, your knuckles will never forgive you.
That’s funny. Personally I prefer the twin handles.
Does the 450 have a 7.1 left hand power Handle model
John Zacual Only the 463 comes in a power handle left handed version out of the box. KDS-463PLX.
Okuma does however sell the power handle for the 450 size that will fit the 471. Hope that helps.
I was told tht these reels are BEAST! Good review Davey.
They are crazy strong! The 450 size was my go to bluefin reel for fish up to 60lbs last year.
@@DaveysWorldFishing When Jeff was here fishing he suggested i try the 350SS. If Jeff suggest i should try it, then i'm all for it!
@@ScubaChris The 350 is perfect putting out 25+ pounds of drag. They are ridiculously good.
@@DaveysWorldFishing Ok, i now have the the 450 & 350 with the Power Handle. On the 6-pin velocity control what is the best configuration for distance casting? Mahalos:)
@@ScubaChris I use my reels completely free. That will give you the least amount of resistance for the greatest distance. That will also give you the greatest chance for a backlash Lol!.
what is the designation on the handles when ordering a 463ss , I see P or PLx which one is the power handle the one Knob style .
P- stands for Power Handle. The PLX stands for Left Handed Power Handle. The LX on Okuma products always means left handed.
The new Black Cedros spinning reel is that gonna be to the metalloid spinning reel that never got released I've been waiting for that real?
No- Its actually a completely new platform. Its pretty exciting. We have been testing that reel for a little over 2 years now. This week we put the hammer to big Tarpon on them as well.
Thanks for responding!! I love all the okuma gear. You were a super cold guy when I met you while servicing my reels. Keep up the great work. Look forward to getting the new cedros. I currently own the 65s 💪👍
@@mychalcummings4140Thank you for the kind words! I really appreciate it.
Hey davey. I want to ask you about the komodo. The 300 and 400 have synchronized level wind but the 200 does not. So what is the advantage of synchronized and non synchronized level wind?
On the larger levelwinds, the engaged level wind keeps your line coming off and being reeled on straight. The spools are much wider, so if the level wind was in a stalled position, the line will peel off from harsher angles and slow the line leaving the reel. On the smaller, 200 size, the spool is narrow enough that you don't have that issue. I hope that makes sense.
@@DaveysWorldFishing thank you very much. Got 273 already. Really satisfied with it
Hi Dave you always have nice videos and everytime I watch it your hand reminds me of Trump😂😂😂
did they recently change the sizes to 364 and 463?
No. These are the standard numbering system Okuma uses. The second two numbers listed on each model are the gear ratios. For instance, on the 450!size reel, they offer a 463 and 471. That is a 6.3:1 and 7.1:1 gear ratios.
Same type of thing on the 350 size.
I was thinking of picking up a komodo in the 450 size, but I don't know what gear ratio to buy. I want it to be an all around setup for yellowtail and calicos. I found a good deal for the 7:1 ratio, but I have heard great things about the 6:3. Which one would you recommend?
Swim baits/jigs mainly 6:3
Live bait mainly 7:1
This is my opinion don’t beat me up.
Reasoning is if I’m using swim baits/jigs I want slower movement per crank.
Live bait I just drop over and wait, once fish is on the faster I get it back from 200’ the better.
If you want a good all around, the 6.3 will do you great. The difference is 4" of line per crank. From 33.5 to 37.7" per turn of the handle. Not a tremendous amount of difference.
@@thesimplefixchannel4785 thanks for the insight
@@DaveysWorldFishing awesome thanks
Can you please tell me is the handle loose on this Komodo reels,I bought new one today ,feels kinda loose when reeling, like it has 0.5mm of free space when you grab the drag star and try to pull in,out.Sorry for my bad English hope you understand my question.Maybe its normal?
There might be a little play in the handle. I haven't noticed much myself. Good luck! Hope you enjoy it.
No doubt they are beast but Are these reels good for lure fishing? I've heard these reels doesn't cast smooth and long as good as other reels like shimano tranx and abu revo beast
They are awesome for lure and light baits as well as heavy jigs and iron. I have never heard of a casting issue. I’d put them up against the Trans , Revo and Lexa anytime.
@@DaveysWorldFishing thanks mate for the info.😊 We fish for himalayan golden mahseer up in himalayas in big fast flowing river and they get big over 50pounds and are known for speed powerful runs. we use lures from 20 gram to 40gram range and most of the time long cast is required from 30 to 70yards so that was the reason i was keen to know about casting distance otherwise this reel definitely is and shuold be absolutely perfect for mahseer fishing.. Power. Torque. Line capacity. Durable.. just perfect 😊😊
These reel usually use to hunt monsters like papuan blackbass and jigging. You can watch gonglei (king of casting) use it. Many of my friend also use it to hunt borneo black bass and never heard the complain about this reel. Its a beast and really tough. It can cast lightweight lure also because i own the 200 size and already tested it.
@@NashFishingChannel thanks alot brother!
Anything in the works about coming out with a 500 komodo baitcaster that will crush the 500hg Tranx? Okuma customers need it to shut shimano guys up!! Help please
Me
okuma has always been a good company. i don’t get why its such a difference in quality compared to Berkley who makes it.
I am not sure I understand. Okuma and Berkley are completely different companies and have nothing to do with each other.
I just bought the Okuma Komodo SS Large Capacity Low Profile Baitcaster, KDS-463P from Amazon it will arrive tomorrow.
You are gonna love it! They are awesome reels.
Did you figure out the side plate?
@@DaveysWorldFishing Yes, I had to loosen the screw first before removing side plate.
can you cast with it
Very easy reel to cast. This is my go-to long casting surface iron and swimbait reel now.
You need a very heavy lure to cast the 300- and 400-series reels. Their levelwind is permanently engaged, which robs you of casting distance.
The 200 series has a disengaging levelwind just like the Shimano Tranx and Daiwa Lexa. You're able to cast light lures and baits much farther.
What's better KDR or KDS
Well, the KDR was discontinued many years ago and was the same exact platform as the current Helios HSX. The KDS is the updated version with all Stainless Steel components designed for saltwater.
@@DaveysWorldFishing thanks for info
Turn down the music man
