⚓️High-Speed Entry: 1000-footer hits 10 Knots under Lift Bridge!

  • The 1000-foot ship American Century passed under the Aerial Lift Bridge as it arrived from Lake Superior in Duluth, MN! I noticed very early that this ship was moving very fast. This 1000-foot ship maintained a speed of over 10 knots as it arrived under the Lift Bridge! This was the fastest speed I have documented of a ship this size as it entered the Duluth ship canal. I showed the actual ship speed transmitted by AIS on a phone screen during this video so you could see it too. The huge ship was blazing through the ship canal! Wow!

Yes, here’s the speed limit information for the harbor. The captain did a great job slowing that huge vessel down to make the turn in the harbor basin. A true professional without a doubt. www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/33/162.110

i applaud you geeking out over this ship's arrival, definitely cool to watch so closely. Thought you ramped up the geek factor by showing us the manufacturer of that light fixture, but then... when you gave us the decibel rating for that horn... that, my friend takes the cake. You have me cracking up over here, my friend. I’m just having fun out there. Just a regular dude with a camera that hits record that likes ships. I never worked in the industry, just a guy that likes looking at ships like most people. I try to do some research. I really hope you come back and watch some of these upcoming ship videos I’ll do with the snow and ice.

It's those unexpected little voice-over details that makes the difference between a good video/doc. & an average one. The more information offered, the more complete the video story. And the more interesting it is to the viewers. Otherwise, it would almost be like reverting back to the silent movie days with little more than interesting images to watch.
Based on what I viewed, a number of questions came to mind which would have added to the story but, were not included.
      Ship's width?
      Ship's draft, loaded/empty?
      Canal's width, depth?
      Number of ships crew?
      Home port?
      Sail during ice cold winters?
      Port of registry?
      Load capacity in tons?
That type of info could easily enhance & complete the details of this video.
      A suggestions to the videographer.;
The video would have been a lot more dramatic if the ship had been covered in a medium/ wide shot of the ship "coming through" the bridge, toward the camera, rather than the long shot of "going through that bridge in the distance. You lost a lot of beautiful detail from that distant angle . You did well on this one. Hope some of my experience can help on your next one.
      Combat Photo, Ret.

The house with the widows walk on the channel adjacent to the entry of the harbour, is so reminiscent of homes of a gone-by era. Homes with a widows walk were once so prevalent at points of entry into safe harbours for sailing vessels. Called a widows walk because the wives of sailors would wait at the anticipate time, hours on end and watch from the perched walk for the return of the sailing vessel their loved one was on. In a era of little assistance for those at sea when needed, loss of life for a mariner was not to be unexpected, it occurred much more than it does today. The widows walk, so named for the presence of widows seen walking about that perch high above the roof, widows of lost loved one's at sea that never returned. Widows walk, some being enclosed and some with just railings. I truly love seeing these homes. 😔

In the 90s I worked on an American owned fishing tender vessel, based in Seattle. 3 times a year I was among a crew of 10, going out to the Bering Sea to service fishing factory boats. Our puny ship was shy of 300’, when we tied alongside the big ones for transfers, they towered over our deck by a couple stories, and were larger, maybe 400feet. Our beam was about 50’, though I can’t really remember.
Watching the radar at night it might take a Japanese super freighter a couple hours to pass us, probably 20 miles off our starboard, depending on the direction we were heading. We were much further north.
The captain and chief mate would tell me hours of stories. Saying that this ships were chugging along at about 20knotts, whereas we maxed at 10. They also were like 1000 foot, 5x the size of us.
An 1100 foot ship is just over 1/5 of a mile! That’s still an amazing thing. I stopped that work after only 3 years. An enjoyable experience and adventure.

There have been a few questions about the boat and bridge signal horns when the boats are entering and leaving the Port of Duluth. In most cases, once radio communication with the bridge has been established, use of the boat and bridge sound signals are not necessary and operation of the sound signals is left up to the captains. Often, boats will not use the loud horns after dark as a courtesy to city residents. So, most often when you hear the customary whistle/horn-blowing sequence of "long-short-short" it is a friendly salute to the Port of Duluth from the ship captain and is responded to by the lift bridge operator with the same sequence. The Master Salute is an upgraded more formal whistle/horn salute. That is “long-long-long-short-short.” While the famous sound may be a courtesy, it has long been part of the nautical tradition of this great inland sea port.

Great video. She was much better looking as the Columbia Star in my opinion.
We hit the lift bridge a glancing blow on the Courtney Burton doing about the same speed. I guess it would have been around 1988 or so. Minimal damage to us or the pilings. But I imagine a very large fine and an epensive inspection.
The old man was a real cowboy. We were leaving Duluth one time loaded with taconite for LTV Steel in Cleveland. Every ship was riding at anchor as a huge storm was barreling across Minn. heading for the lake and nobody wanted to have it in their stern quarter after making the mid-lake turn to the southeast. The old man took a 10-second look at the weather forecast and declared that we could beat it across the lake. We got caught with at least 18 footers (The Texas deck was awash) and strong gail winds + off our starboard aft quarter about 50 miles from the tip of the Keweenaw. We damn near shoaled getting in the lee of the peninsula and barely escaped with our lives.
We got to the Sault and when we were level with the lock I threw my bag over the rail and got off. They wouldn't let me out of the gate without a letter from the old man releasing me from my articles. I told them they could arrest me if they wanted but I was not getting back on the boat while he was master. Everyone called Oglebay Norton and they didn't want any fuss that might expose his recklessness so I didn't even get fired lol.

Thank you for the kind words. I will definitely be back. I have always loved lake freighters. A little of my background.
Lake shipping is in my blood. My much older brother sailed on the Arthur Anderson, My mother, born on the kitchen table of Middle Neebish lighthouse, was a regionally well-known watercolorist (Pat Norton) who painted freighters mostly, and my Grandfather spent 42 years as a lighthouse keeper (Whitefish Bay Light, Iroquois Point Light and Middle Neebish)
I grew up in the closest private residence to the shipping channel on the Great Lakes that I am aware of (Across from Neebish Island on a point that stuck out into the river just above the rock cut). When I was sailing, my parents would stand on their deck and I could start at the bow and walk aft holding a running conversation with them at barely above conversational volumes. Just like my brother had done with me 17 years prior. We always had to reduce speed for the tricky turn to line up for the rock cut so it gave us plenty of time. If it was night, I would shine the spotlight in their bedroom to wake them up lol.
The vice-president of Interlake at the time flew the entire northern half of the Great Lakes looking for the best place to watch the freighters and always told us he found the second best place when he built his "cabin" right across the river from us. It was cool because every Interlake freighter coming down gave a master's salute when he was in residence. Every year when I was young, he gave us a round trip cruise on a different vessel in exchange for one of Mom's paintings (Which paintings I was informed a few years ago still adorn the halls of headquarters just outside of Cleveland). We always got cards from all the Barkers every holiday.
I am just being excessively verbose and probably boring your subs to death now. So I will save my other stories for another time.

All that industry GONE forever, very sad. Take care Mike and i will now start to check out more of your video,s.

Thanks for another great video of one of these ships in the Duluth ship canal.
Over 10 knots speed. Remember in transporting bulk cargo time is money. They have to empty and refill then deliver the cargo.
What is the speed limit in that lift bridge ship canal?
These captains and pilots travel that canal many times. This is not their first time through the canal. It may be their 100th or more time through.
It is still amazing how blunt and not streamlined the bow of that ship appears. The very square the stern creates lots of turbulence.

I have a question Mike, you say that some of these ships are riding at 20’ below the water empty and I thought the canal was about 28’ deep. Not a lot of extra clearance. Keep it up

    • @vibewithmike
      @vibewithmike  11 місяців тому +2

You are exactly right. There’s not a lot of wiggle room. Some of those ships are very close to the bottom. That’s why they got a really watch how much weight they put in the cargo holds.

A notable spectacle. I used to enjoy watching the ships climb the rapids under the golden gate, on my hitching tour in the US in 2008. A guy came out of a door in one of the piers one time and I had an interesting discussion about the bridge and retrofitting work to protect against Earth quakes which I had noted earlier. It is quite a monumental and ancient looking structure, vibrating and held up by 2 gigantic steel cables. The White City across the bay looked magnificent, although it seems it has gone to the dogs since then…

Is there a duty bridge tender that gets a call to come and raise the bridge? What if he gets a flat tire or has an accident on the way over? What are ships standing orders in regards to how far out they have to stay until bridge is raised? Never be able to stop that ship doing 10 kts......would be half a mile at least.

Thanks again for another great video of the Duluth passage into the harbor.
1,000 foot ship is limited by the size of the Soo locks in Sault Saint Marie. The locks limit the size of all of these great lakes ships.
I have never seen the Soo locks. But, I have seen a video of the locks.
I don't know why the Soo locks have not been expanded to longer and wider to accommodate much larger ships
On the oceans bulk carriers exceed 1,200 feet long and 200 feet wide. They can probably carry over 4 times the volume and weight
of one of these great lakes carriers.

    • @vibewithmike

@@vibewithmikeThey are working on opening another Poe sized lock. That lock will replace 2 older locks. It will be open in a few more years. With coal shipments on the decline, and ample ship capacity now for ore, we will most likely not see any greater than 1000 foot vessels built anytime soon. But when another Poe sized lock opens, that will help reduce backups.
