What a wonderful and unique picture indeed. Seeing that old lamp post having the lift bridge as a back-drop. It's a picture that draws and captivates one attention in a moment of time! Now, to capture the sun, the moon or even a seagull, any bird within that picture, resting on the lamp post or in flight will be incredible. A picture of still-life that comes alive when seeing life there in wonderful, Duluth MN. A picture only to have happened in that moment in time. 🧐

Great job Mike. Very articulate narrative and your excitement equaled the description. I spent a month in Duluth one week in December, 1987. Mike, what kind of equipment are you using to shoot video? Thats great nighttime stuff! Next time I'm out in Duluth I'd like to take video with something other than a phone :)
Someday, I’ll have to do something different from a phone. Did you see the video from on the boat today looking at the ship? ua-cam.com/users/livephgAnWEyfZ0?si=xPpoA7hcbhu-kR5k
Algoma ships look better in the dark, hides the rusty look of their hulls, for some reason, the topside of their ships always look brand new and their hulls look like they've been in the water since 1942
First view of the ship in the canal: Love the lower angle viewing the ship. It almost makes the ship look like it is riding on elevated water within the canal. Gives the ship a little look of majesty.
Think about the crows nest spar at aft on this ship, John D. Leitch forward the stacks heat shield. Imagine being on the lake, even now as this ship navigates through this narrow channel, imagine toolly fog, thick as molasses low engulfing all visibility from the forward pilot house, wheelhouse. The piercing light atop that crows nest, high up on that spar will aid in the navigation of this ship, especially when egressing maritime ports, rivers, narrow passage deep water channels as this channel is in Duluth MN. The importance of having full situational awareness is so critical with weather changing, especially when fog is present. You see to navigate and in short order, loose all sight bringing possible danger in navigating such large lumbering vessels needing clear passage and time stop without having to drop the ships angers. Some maritime food for thought! 🧐
Mike, that pier light pole/two globes you showed was very interesting looking. I found some pictures from 1905, and the lights back then were the same design as today. Its pretty neat they are maintaining this history!
What an absolutely cool comment. Mary thank you so much. That is so cool of you to say this. It’s funny, each ship has its own story with it. It’s almost like you get to know them. Again, thank you so much. I’m really glad that you’re enjoying the channel. Don’t miss this video from today. Ghost! I can’t underscore of how awesome this video was to record and how it turned out. This is the most unique ship on the Great Lakes in my opinion. What a treat to catch this at night in this situation finally coming into Duluth.👍⛴️
@GhostSportsES at some point I think it would be really cool to do a community live stream at some point. We’ll have to figure out how this would go down, but I hear what you are saying.
Mike this one is a 10 out of 10 too! It’s not just covering an event. It’s the way you narrate the story for us, and angles you film for us. Very cool. Thanks! That Captain must have known he was on camera too, he knew that water was flat calm and didn’t want to leave a wake to ruin the reflection! Just Awesome, thanks Mike!
Oh man that came in like a canoe in steath mode! Once again loved the pre amble and extra info...especially about the yellow light on the bridge stating neutral current....all new info for boat friends!
That water was so calm and still. It reflected every light beam that was out there. It just said the stage so beautifully. The ship really looked fantastic Coming through as well.
Unbelievably, I must tell you that our temperature here in Duluth is not too far off which is crazy. It should be much colder. Thank you for watching this awesome ship come through Duluth for the first time this year.
Mike often denotes the 'water draft' which is the distance from the waterline to the bottom of the keel. Well there is also an 'air draft'. It is the distance from the waterline to the highest part of the ship. 'Vertical clearance' is the distance in excess of the air draft that allows a vessel to pass safely under a bridge or object
More information about ‘Air Draft’ here. www.dco.uscg.mil/Portals/9/TVNCOE/Documents/SafetyAlerts/AirDraft.pdf?ver=2017-08-11-142836-740#:~:text=Air%20draft%20(draught)%20is%20a,under%20a%20bridge%20or%20object.

Hi Mike, how are you doing, what a great sight that vessel the John D Leitch coming in to the harbour, with all the lights reflecting on the water, a great video Mike. 👍👍.
Seeing this video presentation at a time we see for ourselves, portrays a stillness not often captured to take one's attention in the way we see here. Stillness, a calmness with bright lights in the background that adds even more stillness, light not moving with the still calmness of water reflecting that light so still, enabling all to see this moment in Duluth MN. as this uniquely incredible ship, John D. Leitch is called to port. Another great video indeed! 🧐
Is there anywhere that shows a schedule of when ships may be coming and going from duluth? Iwant to travel there sometime from Iowa. Love the videos!!!!!
Devin, Here are the three tools that I use to determine when the ships will be arriving or departing in Duluth. Keep in mind, there is no sure thing because of weather, speed of loading/unloading, etc. However, if you use all three of these together, it’ll really help you know what’s going on. Here are those three tools. #1 This spreadsheet is maintained by people that are keeping their eye on the ships on the lakes, it’s pretty accurate. However, it all depends on when it gets updated, which typically is many times throughout the day. I use this one the most. docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vSteOg5IAWJEkJm3NaLDqK3PqSUz_CBxNGUZSQsw_HS1hHqqJKTZHvuytYd9V5ndCEn7ZivM7IpPwrl/pubhtml?gid=0&single=true #2 This is updated by Duluth Harbor Cams, this one can be accurate too, however, it’s all about when it gets updated as well. They do a good job. harborlookout.com/ships#0 #3 This will help you determine exactly where the ship is in live time. It’s extremely accurate. The app I use is called “MarineTraffic” and it has a blue ship for the logo. You will really enjoy it! You can research vessel names and follow ships all over the world. You can download it on your Android or Apple phone.
Got to say, I am new at this ...I have been watching boats off of Pelee through the Pelee Passage and I instantly favoured 3 lakers..one of them being the most recognizable and likey to win 4th place at the beauty pageant....the John D Lietch!
Hey Mike, Greetings from Oregon. So at night no big horn blowing by ship or bridge? Is that standard? Are there residences nearby? Thanks for wonderful videos and commentary!
What a very nice thing to say. I love when you leave a comment so that I can think about Tucson. What a wonderful city. Thank you so much for watching this ship video friend.
Awesome video Mike. FYI the John D Leitch was named after the owner of Upper Lakes Shipping. Algoma acquired the fleet in 2011. It is said John had a hand in all his ship builds. He was very involved in the Canadian Great Lakes trade, and would make a point of visiting all his ships. He once boarded one of his ships, and was upset the officer lounge had dated furniture. He ordered the furniture removed and ordered new furniture fit for an officer lounge.
What a beautiful combination of a gorgeous night sky, soft harbor lights, and a magnificent vessel gracefully passing through the channel! Do these freighters that sail on the upper Great Lakes ever make their way down to the lower two? I have a marine traffic app on my phone and often check out what ships are on Lake Erie or Lake Ontario (esp. if I’m near to the lakes and see one in the distance)- but I have not recognized any names of ships that I have seen passing through Duluth. (I hope that’s not a dumb question, but I am new to watching this channel).
This is an absolutely fantastic question! I’ll have to verify, but I believe these ships are able to get onto all five Great Lakes but the Welland Canal is another issue. Let me look into this or maybe someone else knows?
There was nothing like recording the ship at night. It’s my favorite video for a ship at night so far. The captain had the ship going slower than I’ve ever seen a ship going through the canal and I couldn’t record everything perfectly.👍⛴️
The water was so beautiful on top and calm for this beautiful ship that moves so slow for me to get all of this good footage. What a beautiful ship it was.

What an awesome night video Mike. You never cease to amaze all of us boat friends. That light pole, you should blacken out the post and show it as two full moons with the night sky as back ground. Peace!
There’s something about that light pole Scott. Chuck told me that it’s the original light poles that they had from the early 1900s that they must’ve converted. That makes me feel even more attached to these polls. I can’t tell you how excited I was to record this ship and everything went the way I wanted it to and the ship looks so beautiful in person.
Here is a question for you, 2 in fact- 1- What was the name of John D Leitch before joining ACM? 2- Does the Great Lakes have a Tide? Great video Mike... Thanks for Sharing...
So glad you asked! I found this cool story about the ship here with its former name. greatlakesships.wordpress.com/canadian-century/ Regarding the tide. No tide on Lake Superior eve though it looks that way

@@vibewithmikeWOW that's good pay. Thanks from New York
@@freddypflugbeil6 I hope all is well in New York my friend. Yes, they are making some good money but keep in mind they are away from their family a lot and on holidays too
You get a 4k of the Wilfred Sykes Mike?
Yes, I did. I can’t wait to show you brother.
@vibewithmike sure did, I caught you live! I think your phone has better camera than mine. Your video looks 👍
Glassy
Exactly, Lake superior was like glass out there
All I see is EDMOND FITZGERALD. Time of year and it looked like one of the ones going bye. To me.
2.3 kn is 2.6 miles/ h
The ship was definitely moving slow and I’m so happy it was to capture its beauty
What, no surfers?
No surfers in this one! Those surfers need some sleep too🌊😂😂😂😂
Algoma ships look better in the dark, hides the rusty look of their hulls, for some reason, the topside of their ships always look brand new and their hulls look like they've been in the water since 1942
Me too ghost
👍🙏⛴️
Bfields43 not to far from me
First view of the ship in the canal: Love the lower angle viewing the ship. It almost makes the ship look like it is riding on elevated water within the canal. Gives the ship a little look of majesty.
It’s funny that you say that, I felt the same way, it was sitting up way high out of the water
That was AWESOME !!!!!
JUST ABOUT PERFECT !!!
What an awesome compliment. I appreciate you so much.
Congrats Mike up to 19.5 K subscribers!
Thank you, I appreciate you saying that. There’s nothing funner than recording these ships for everybody.
And there’s our friend John, again, with absolutely fantastic insight and thought-provoking information. Thanks brother, we all appreciate you.
Mike, that pier light pole/two globes you showed was very interesting looking. I found some pictures from 1905, and the lights back then were the same design as today. Its pretty neat they are maintaining this history!
I love that pier light. it looks so historic and old-school. I absolutely love them. It makes such a good backdrop to watch a ship with.
History is being maintained. @@vibewithmike
@chuckg6039 I’ll maintain it even further. At some point I’m going to take a beautiful photograph with that light and hang it on my wall.
Awesome ship - and beautiful camera work!! Thanks, Mike!😀👍
Thank you, my friend, I’m glad that you enjoyed the ship, and all these beautiful views in Duluth and around the bridge
I was never into this type of video until i found your channel. Great work.
Edit- I used to live in Crosby and would be in Duluth all the time.
What an absolutely cool comment. Mary thank you so much. That is so cool of you to say this. It’s funny, each ship has its own story with it. It’s almost like you get to know them. Again, thank you so much. I’m really glad that you’re enjoying the channel. Don’t miss this video from today. I know you’ll love it. ⚓️Duluth's 1949 Ship Sykes: 2023's Greatest Show!

I have a picture of myself as a 6 yr old in 1967 when this ship was called the Canadian century on the Welland CanalI almost got another pic in Iroquois Ontario beside this ship as it went through the locks a couple years ago
That was awesome! Fantastic video of a really unusual lake ship. I almost felt that I was there! 10 out of 10 :-)
First one here, The John D. Leitch actually made it into my fav. Laker list. She's gorgeous.
Hope you've been doing good Mike, an all Boat Friends.
Ghost! I can’t underscore of how awesome this video was to record and how it turned out. This is the most unique ship on the Great Lakes in my opinion. What a treat to catch this at night in this situation finally coming into Duluth.👍⛴️
Sorry but I beat you here. 🙃🤭

This ship looks incredible.❤️🚢❤️
Mike this one is a 10 out of 10 too! It’s not just covering an event. It’s the way you narrate the story for us, and angles you film for us. Very cool. Thanks! That Captain must have known he was on camera too, he knew that water was flat calm and didn’t want to leave a wake to ruin the reflection! Just Awesome, thanks Mike!

Hey, I love that ship too, the Alpena!
Look how calm the water is and the ship just glazing through it, that is so peaceful to watch ☺⛴⚓
That water was so calm and still. It reflected every light beam that was out there. It just said the stage so beautifully. The ship really looked fantastic Coming through as well.
looks very much like the Oglebay Norton Courtney Burton.
Hello Mike, 52 in Richmond, Virginia.
Unbelievably, I must tell you that our temperature here in Duluth is not too far off which is crazy. It should be much colder. Thank you for watching this awesome ship come through Duluth for the first time this year.
She is a hard working old ship I'll say that, just look at her sides
Also I really like the house forward design of the big ships
Hard-working and absolutely beautiful. This ship is a stunner.

It was so awesome to see this ship moving slow to capture all of its beauty in this video
I’ve only been a subscriber for a few months, but for me, this is the best video that I have seen. Very beautiful ship. Nice work, Mike!!!
Thank you for subscribing and thank you for the wonderful comment
Seeing this video presentation at a time we see for ourselves, portrays a stillness not often captured to take one's attention in the way we see here. Stillness, a calmness with bright lights in the background that adds even more stillness, light not moving with the still calmness of water reflecting that light so still, enabling all to see this moment in Duluth MN. as this uniquely incredible ship, John D. Leitch is called to port. Another great video indeed! 🧐
This is such a wonderful and kind comment. Thank you so much John. I’m so glad you enjoyed this shit. It’s an incredible ship without it doubt
He's going so slow,,,like he is sneaking in,,,,hardly a ripple from the JDL,,beautiful water,,,😍
The ship was so beautiful in person
Is there anywhere that shows a schedule of when ships may be coming and going from duluth? Iwant to travel there sometime from Iowa. Love the videos!!!!!
Devin, Here are the three tools that I use to determine when the ships will be arriving or departing in Duluth. Keep in mind, there is no sure thing because of weather, speed of loading/unloading, etc. However, if you use all three of these together, it’ll really help you know what’s going on. Here are those three tools.

This spreadsheet is maintained by people that are keeping their eye on the ships on the lakes, it’s pretty accurate. However, it all depends on when it gets updated, which typically is many times throughout the day. I use this one the most. docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vSteOg5IAWJEkJm3NaLDqK3PqSUz_CBxNGUZSQsw_HS1hHqqJKTZHvuytYd9V5ndCEn7ZivM7IpPwrl/pubhtml?gid=0&single=true

This is updated by Duluth Harbor Cams, this one can be accurate too, however, it’s all about when it gets updated as well. They do a good job. harborlookout.com/ships#0

This will help you determine exactly where the ship is in live time. It’s extremely accurate. The app I use is called “MarineTraffic” and it has a blue ship for the logo. You will really enjoy it! You can research vessel names and follow ships all over the world. You can download it on your Android or Apple phone.
Cool video. When I saw that ambulance cross the bridge, lights and sirens I got nostalgic. I went from sailor to paramedic. It was my final job
Much respect to all first responders!
Great video Mike, excellent to see the JD Leitch. Thanks so much for sharing these videos
Sam in. 53* FOGGY Towson. Really interesting ship indeed. What is that TALL THIN BLACK STACK sticking WAY up above the main stacks? Thanks Mike
Sam, this ship is one of a kind with the pilot house
Got to say, I am new at this ...I have been watching boats off of Pelee through the Pelee Passage and I instantly favoured 3 lakers..one of them being the most recognizable and likey to win 4th place at the beauty pageant....the John D Lietch!

Hey Mike, Greetings from Oregon.
So at night no big horn blowing by ship or bridge? Is that standard? Are there residences nearby? Thanks for wonderful videos and commentary!
Yes, homes a few hundred of feet next to bridge

Long live the memory of John
Great video Mike. Going to be passing through Duluth tomorrow on my way up to Orr MN. I don’t think safe ice Yet. Have a good night.
Safe travels, Dennis. No worries about ice because there’s all green grass and Duluth right now unbelievably. Thanks for watching this awesome ship.
Great Video Mike, I'm in Two Harbors, any idea when the John D. Leitch will be departing? Would be awesome to see.
I’m guessing it will depart late tonight from Duluth
That’s the best
Thank you so much for watching this video. This ship is truly one of a kind.⛴️👍
Its lit up like a Christmas tree !
There was nothing like recording the ship at night. It’s my favorite video for a ship at night so far. The captain had the ship going slower than I’ve ever seen a ship going through the canal and I couldn’t record everything perfectly.👍⛴️
Fantastic looking ship, amazing! What a beautiful night, wish I was there. 👍🙂❤
The water was so beautiful on top and calm for this beautiful ship that moves so slow for me to get all of this good footage. What a beautiful ship it was.
Mike, have you ever done a video of the other bridges Blotnick, etc? Thanks. Lee in NC
No, I have never done a video on that bridge. It’s just a bridge that connects Minnesota to Wisconsin.
Intriguing ship. Looks like a great video coming!
It was one of the funniest videos to record of a ship I’ve ever done

Good thing that the ambulance made it across
You are right, that ambulance was moving pretty fast, and I am glad that it made it across too before the ship came
What an awesome night video Mike.
