Musical brilliance aside, this song is a gem of a creation from Coke studio Bangla that incorporated elements from our cultural heritage in the finest possible way. If you know a little background story of Bono Bibi, this song hits you even stronger.
"Bono Bibi", the goddess of the forest, is a deity worshipped by the people of the Sundarbans, a mangrove forest in the delta region of the Bay of Bengal, which is spread across Bangladesh and India. She is believed to be the protector of the forests and its inhabitants, especially the fishermen and honey collectors who venture into the dense mangrove forests.
The word "Bono" means "forest" in the local dialect, and "Bibi" means "lady" or "mistress" in Persian. The origins of Bonobibi in the Sundarbans are not clear, and there are different versions of the story. According to one legend, Bono Bibi was a Muslim princess who ended up in the forest along with her brother and started living there. At one point she saved a Hindu man named Dukhe, who later became her faithful companion. Together, they protected the forest from various dangers, including tigers, pirates, and robbers. Regardless of her origins, Bonbibi has become an integral part of the folklore and culture of the Sundarbans region. She is revered as a protector of the forest and its inhabitants, and her story has been passed down through generations through oral tradition and folklore.
What always fascinates me about Bono Bibi is that the worship of this deity is a blend of local Hindu and Muslim traditions. She is considered to be a symbol of communal harmony, as she is revered by both Hindus and Muslims in the region.
Here's a fun-fact about the song that I noticed randomly. There is a famous book called "Bonbibi Johura-nama," which is a collection of folk tales and songs that recount the legends and adventures of Bonbibi. And here in this song “Johura” Baul recounts the legends of the goddess, which is surely a pleasant coincidence. But I found it quite poetic and fitting for this musical masterpiece!
Apart from Bono Bibi, every other idea and artwork highlighted throughout the song is equally fascinating. Khona'r bochon to begin with, and showcasing SM Sultan's master artwork in the digital backdrop was a pure visual treat for me.
"Khona'r Bochon" is a term in Bengali that means "Khona's philosophy" or "Khona's teachings." It refers to the ideas and values that were espoused by Khona, a legendary poet and astrologer in Bengali folklore. She is linked with numerous well-known adages related to various topics such as weather, astrology, crops, and productivity. For a long time, Khona's counsel served as a guiding light for farmers, instructing them on when to sow their seeds and how to cultivate the soil for various crops. Her verses were often set to music or recited aloud and were beloved by the people of her village and beyond for their beauty, wisdom, and insight.
Some people believe that Khona may have been a mythical or fictional character rather than an actual historical figure. However, the wisdom and teachings attributed to her name continue to be valued and celebrated by readers and listeners in Bengal and beyond today.
On the other hand, SM Sultan was a renowned Bangladeshi artist who worked in painting and drawing and is widely regarded as one of the most important artists of the 20th century in the region. He was known for his powerful and evocative depictions of rural life in Bengal, which often featured muscular labourers engaged in the activities of their everyday lives, animals, and landscapes.
Sultan's artwork was characterized by bold colors, strong lines, and a distinctive sense of texture and movement. He drew inspiration from the natural beauty and rhythms of the Bengali countryside, as well as from his own personal experiences and struggles.
Throughout his career, Sultan remained deeply committed to using his art to give voice to the struggles and aspirations of the common people of Bengal. His legacy continues to inspire generations of artists and activists in the region today and this song by Coke Studio Bangla was a brilliant tribute to the legend.
The song also makes a reference to "Sojon Badiar Ghat". Additionally, the song seems to make a subtle reference to one of my childhood favorites, "Rakhal Chele" by Palli Kobi Jasim Uddin, where the song lyric reads, "Motor shak-e Joriye dhore nobo-bodhur paa."
"Sojon Badiar Ghat" is among Jasim Uddin's most famous and enduring works. His works in general are notable for their lyrical beauty and emotional depth, and have helped to popularize folk literature among a wider audience.
"Sojon Badiar Ghat" is not only a love story, but also a reflection of the communal harmony that has long existed between common Hindus and Muslims in the Bengal region. The story revolves around the challenges that a muslim boy Sojan and a hindu girl Duli face as they try to navigate their relationship while dealing with opposition from their families and communities. Despite growing tensions at times, people of different faiths seemed to share the joys and sorrows of life as a community. "Sojon Badiar Ghat" celebrates the diverse and interconnected tapestry of life in Bengal, and promotes the values of unity, compassion, and harmony.
As I mentioned earlier, the way cultural elements from different folk-literature are used in this version is simply brilliant and immediately captivated me. To me, Bonobibi embodies a joyous celebration of our rich cultural heritage and blissful harmony of diverse religious traditions in our region. At a time when our peaceful coexistence is often being threatened by extremist forces, this song reminds us of who we truly are and the enduring essence of cultural and religious amity that runs deep in our veins.
Lastly, a huge shoutout to everyone involved in creating this masterpiece. I am going to listen to/watch this song countless times in the next few days. Season 2 has been amazing so far. I can't wait to see what else is waiting for us in the upcoming songs.
Update: All the information I have provided can be found in the public domain and I often took help from different online sources. If you notice any errors or inconsistencies in any of those, please leave a comment so that I can correct them promptly.

my only gripe is that the 1st transition was too abrupt.. and not smooth and seamless, background music should have been prolonged into the megdol vocals for continuity purposes (like it was in the 2nd transition).
but the ending man, it was perfect.

At the beginning of the song the female chorus sings some lyrics from "Khanar Bochon" (Khana's words). These small poetry are the true gem of Bengali literature and culture. These texts are astronomical and weather forecast to help farmers and village dwellers written as small poem. Surprisingly a village woman named "Khona" written these poetry sometime between 8th and 12th century in Bengal. These poems are so versatile and accurate, these poems guided our village farmers throughout the centuries. A few Example (not used in the song)
Jodi borshe magher shesh. (If it rains early February)
Dhonny rajar punnya desh. (The country will flourish ), (with good harvest)
Sholo cashe mula (16 days to plough for radish)
Tar orrdheke tula (half of that to plough for cotton)
Tar orrdhek dhan (half of that to plough for rice paddy)
Bina chase pan ( no need to plough for betel leaves)

Bonbibi' or ‘Bandevi’, which literally translates to the 'lady of the forest', is a guardian spirit of the forests of the Sundarbans. A densely populated area, Bengal is inhabited both by the Hindus and Muslims . The Goddess Bonbibi, worshipped by Hindus communities in the dense Sundarbans forest. Moreover, since the title 'bibi' is used commonly by Muslim women as a surname, that makes it is a distinctive name for a Bengali goddess.
According to mythology, Bonbibi is believed to be the daughter of Ibrahim, a fakir from Mecca. As his wife Phulbibi couldn't bear a child, Ibrahim married Golalbibi. However, to keep a promise made by Ibrahim to his first wife, he left the pregnant Golalbibi in a forest. She soon gave birth to two children whom she called Bonbibi and Shah Jangali; unable to raise them both, the woman abandoned the girl. Fortunately, she was raised by a deer and grew up. Later the family was shortly reunited before Bonbibi and her brother went to Medina where they consulted Fatima (a holy woman) about their future. Hearing Bonbibi’s story, she granted her the possibility of saving forest people whenever they would seek her assistance. Thus, Bonbibi and Shah Jangali went to India where they were to become lords of the swampland, inhabited by a demon, Dakkhin Rai, and his mother, Narayani, who attacked the twins. Bonbibi called Fatima who came to her rescue and defeated Dakkhin Rai and Narayani. However, Bonbibi showed her generosity and decided that she would rule only on half the land, leaving the rest to the demon. After this, Bonbibi started moving from village to village to establish her rule. However it's just a mythology 😊

I have recently known about Bonobibi. Previously, Sundorbon was a vast forest, it used to cover almost half of Bangladesh. People who used to live near the forest area, they used to believe Bonobibi as the Goddess of forest. She used to protect them from evils of forest and let them live by the forest happily.

What a reaction video. I saw it for almost 30 minutes and I wanted more. Such humbleness from both of you. You are right though, 30 mins are hardly enough to cover the song but very very well done.
I loved the song but for me the cherry on cake was the timing of the song release. it was 1 am in Bangladesh, and the promotion posts repeatedly mentioned that they wanted the people of the bustling cities to emerse in Nature at the quiets of night. And they did it. I don’t know why, but to me the sound of the rice grain moving was the soul of the songs just like it is the soul of Bangladesh Culture. This song also has several references towards famous artworks and literatures of Bangladesh. My favorite one is “Sujon Boidar Ghat”. by Jasim Uddin and “ Hazar bichir dhore” by Jahir Raihan. All in one, this song is the best reference to Bangladesh

The is one of the few Artcell songs where you won’t get a copyright strike (probably). G-series doesn’t own it because of the dispute between Artcell’s guitarist Ershad Zaman and the rest of the band.
This is the last song of Artcell with original lineup. These are 2 versions of same song that Ershad was developing. Then he was kicked out. Ershad was replaced by two technically sound guitarists. But guitarist like Ershad Zaman is not born everyday. This two demo songs show us Erahad’s working procedure and the feel of his guitars. I hope you’ll enjoy.
