If what it feels to be a Bengali - the 1000s of years of our history and culture - could be consolidated into a 7min song, this is it. I read so many Bengalis laughed and cried while listening to this epic. Glad everyone else got to experience the Bangla magic also!

The Bangla writing shown at 0:24 roughly translates to,
"The color of Sultan or the call of Khana
    Still echoes in our hearts
Amidst mountains and oceans, in nature's embrace
This song of ours, a tribute to that love."
S.M. Sultan was a renowned Bangladeshi artist. Sultan was known for his unique style of painting that combined elements of traditional Bengali art with modernist techniques. His works often depicted rural life, landscapes, and everyday people, and were praised for their vivid colors and emotional intensity.
and Khana refers to the legendary poet and philosopher, who is said to have roamed the forests of Bangladesh seeking enlightenment. Her writings and teachings have had a significant influence on Bengali literature and culture.
Your reaction really made me enjoy the song even more! Love from BD.

You don't have to be a Bengali like me (Bengali being the ethnic group that spans several countries, Bangladeshi or Indian or Burmese or Nepali being the nationalities of the people who are Bengali, for example) to feel emotionally moved by the stunning beauty of this song. Knowing the deep meaning of the lyrics adds an extra heft and that has actually been making me cry every time I hear it. It's so good. This is one of the peaks of the Coke Studio franchise, an absolute instant classic. Thanks for reviewing it with your always eloquent and informative takes. You two are the best, and seriously I mean that. No hay ningúna duda que sus reacciones musicales son los mejores en el mundo de "reaction videos" disponibles en UA-cam. Have a great week!

Bonbibi' or ‘Bandevi’, which literally translates to the 'lady of the forest', is a guardian spirit of the forests of the Sundarbans. A densely populated area, Bengal is inhabited both by the Hindus and Muslims . The Goddess Bonbibi, worshipped by Hindus communities in the dense Sundarbans forest. Moreover, since the title 'bibi' is used commonly by Muslim women as a surname, that makes it is a distinctive name for a Bengali goddess.
According to mythology, Bonbibi is believed to be the daughter of Ibrahim, a fakir from Mecca. As his wife Phulbibi couldn't bear a child, Ibrahim married Golalbibi. However, to keep a promise made by Ibrahim to his first wife, he left the pregnant Golalbibi in a forest. She soon gave birth to two children whom she called Bonbibi and Shah Jangali; unable to raise them both, the woman abandoned the girl. Fortunately, she was raised by a deer and grew up. Later the family was shortly reunited before Bonbibi and her brother went to Medina where they consulted Fatima (a holy woman) about their future. Hearing Bonbibi’s story, she granted her the possibility of saving forest people whenever they would seek her assistance. Thus, Bonbibi and Shah Jangali went to India where they were to become lords of the swampland, inhabited by a demon, Dakkhin Rai, and his mother, Narayani, who attacked the twins. Bonbibi called Fatima who came to her rescue and defeated Dakkhin Rai and Narayani. However, Bonbibi showed her generosity and decided that she would rule only on half the land, leaving the rest to the demon. After this, Bonbibi started moving from village to village to establish her rule. However it's just a mythology 😊

That one string instrument is called 'ak tara' (ak=1, tara~taar=string). Traditional folk singers sometimes sing using this instrument. It's like a 1 man band. He/she sings, dances and plays aktara, all at once.
It's made of a VEGETABLE! A bamboo is inserted through the centre of the gourd, the upper side of the gourd sliced out and covered with skin. A single steel string. Plucked with finger or plectrum. You can insert 2 strings and make it a 'do tara' (do=2)
Here's a 1 minute clip of what you can do with this instrument.

The one string instrument is called "Ektara". Here "Ek" means one in Bengali.
"Khonar bochon" or "Khona's sayings" comes from a womans legend called Khona. Khona was so familiar with nature that she could read sign and predict natural events. Like when it's going to rain or not. She was lice Oracle of matrix. But legend says people at her time didn't like a woman predicting gods written future. So the cut off her tongue! But her sayings already so famous for being accurate and useful for farmers. Those sayings (Bochon) spread verbally as little poems known as "Khonar bochon" today.
