The first movie was simply all kinds of messed up shit and I really expected nothing less from the sequel, I really can't root for the blind guy after the basement reveal in the first movie
Yeah like everyone hates peacemaker but he’s getting his own show so I think the concept of a villian can’t be a protagonist needs to die down. Deadpool is an anti hero and no one complains about that. I think they have a cool concept here and should just finish this with a Final movie and have him go against John wick.
I dont comment much but just felt like saying... Jeremy, I stumbled across your channel back in 2014 when stuff like Whiplash was coming out. I found almost word for word our thoughts on film were often the exact same, I've watched every video released since then. For my money, the most consistently quality UA-camr out there. Keep doing you, man!
The immediate problem with a Don't Breathe sequel is the suggestion that this sort of incident is common enough to make another movie with the same guy. Yeah, he could be one of those menacing Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees level predators, but unfortunately he doesn't go out looking for his victims, they have to come to him. In a sense, he's defending himself. And that really doesn't happen more than once.
Everything you said is what went through my head as soon as I saw this video and realized they tried to make a sequel. Like this sounds like it's not even a horror movie so I don't know who it is for. Maybe the premise of an old blind psychopath was just too unique of a premise for Hollywood to not try and run into the ground no matter what.

if they were planning on making him a protagonist, this movie should’ve been first and don’t breathe one could’ve been a prequel, it would’ve made it seem a lot more interesting
They didn't do that with Joker and Joker turned out to be extremely well received. So much so that people used it's score on rotten tomatoes as an example as why they disagree with critics. Sure its a different universe but before this live action Joker movie, Joker had literally bombed a hospital which is also fucked up
I don't understand how you can turn the Blind man into the protagonist, or anti-hero. Didn't he basically rape a woman in the first one? You don't usually see that kind of turn from characters like that.
Check out pop culture detective. Hollywood kinda has a thing for stories that are extremely fucked up once you look at them for more than a few seconds.
@@steven6986 What the fuck? LMAO. Hope you haven’t just recommended me some kind of conspiracy nutcase. Gonna check him out. If he is, then I’m afraid I’ll have to yell the CH word.
I really liked this movie. It was tense, scary, and smart. The thing is, I didn’t watch the trailer so I didn’t know what to expect and maybe it’s because my expectations were low, but damn I was surprised. The first act had this really neat one shot sequence that had me on the edge of my seat. The second half of the film was completely up in the air in regards to my expectations, which I loved - I had no idea where the film would go. What followed completely enthrawled me. This movie I adored, as well as the directional choices. The villians in this movie moved the plot forward in a direction towards developing the little girl’s character and the blind man’s motives. I don’t think the movie asked for justice for the blind man or even painted him as a hero, but as a key factor in giving this movie an ending that didn’t seem forced, but authentic.
Exactly! This movie didn't paint him as this hero. He even admitted in this film. The love of his daughter that passed transfered over if that makes sense. The storyline was brilliant!
I have no right to say this since I didn't see the movie, but unfortunately many reviewers like Jeremy (And as the comment sections on this video shows) really didn't get your point about this movie. Because they saw the trailer and their expectations are high, they thinks this movie is try to make you root for the "Protagonist".
@@yeeyeebubba1885 also he did not "rape" for sexual gratificaiton , he just wanted a daugther back , since it was the same woman who killed his child and got away with it .
Sooo, i understand all of Jeremy’s points. It definitely dragged in parts, it didn’t have the tension of the first and DEFINITELY isn’t necessary, but honestly i still enjoyed it. Lang was solid as always (very underrated actor imo) and i enjoyed seeing more angles and depth to the character that come with looking through the protagonist lense. I get that people have a problem with “redeeming the turkey baster guy” but i don’t see it as a redemption at all. we see in the first film that he is heavily conflicted and hates doing the things he does but is just driven by a relentless desire to retrieve what was taken from him and protect what’s his. Same thing in the sequel, just from his perspective. The film presents him as the protagonist, but only in following him. He’s no more a hero than he was in the first. It’s all a matter of perspective and i think that that change was handled quite well. And, aside from him being conveniently more vulnerable in the second film, he still stays true to character, and the film merely shows you the same character in a different scenario, from a different angle and follows him more closely. Make of that what you will, but it gets a thumbs up from me👍
@@ardent835 personally I think they really went too far with that twist in the first one, like I get it, it sucks that your daughter died but like wut he tried to do to that lady he kidnapped is just fucked up and made him basically irredeemable
Problem with humanizing Stephen Lang's character is that twist in the second half of the first one. And you can tell they probably regret having it, considering how the sequel ended up. Even in the first movie, the turkey baster scene felt unnecessary and like they tossed the twist in that he was crazy so we cared more about the robbers breaking into a blind man's house. Some people really liked it, others think it was just there as cheap shock value. Either way, trying to pave over it and make him an anti-hero pisses off both sides. Since the guy was *a literal rapist* in the original. Which sucks, because if the first movie didn't have that twist and he was just a badass blind veteran dude, it probably wouldn't have soured this movie so much.
Choosing to humanize someone who forcibly sexually assaults someone by way of a turkey baster to forcibly inseminate someone is… that is just an awful decision.
@dflowers30 I mean this shit happens in Anime and basically everything. But the point is you never turn sexual assaulters into Anti-Heroes. See I don't generalise things from Hollywood perspective but from writers perspective. The writers usually don't do this but these ones did.
It’s unfortunate that everything has to be about an anti-hero, or “subverting” expectations. There’s nothing wrong with having a bold line between bad guy and good guy. If it’s a good story with solid characters then it will work.
@@Mr_Case_Time well then you should know that in the original Don’t Breathe, the blind old man tried to rape a girl and, I don’t know about you, but I think you’re doing your movie a disservice if you’re trying to get your audience to root for somebody who is creepy and who tried to rape someone.
That’s a shame. Was looking forward to this, but then the last trailer gave away so much of the film I felt cheated; then it’s only a so-so sequel. Damn, hoping for more.
@@Chris-ft2yx well to each their own, I just think it's important to form your own opinion through experience rather than just blindly following someone else's 🙂.
I actually thought this movie was great, it had some really great twists, kinda reminds me of Terminator 2 with the protagonist antagonist take. I felt like this movie stood on its own compared to the first movie. Go watch it!
Just watched and I agree…not as good as 1, but still a nice watch. Plus, Terminator 2 is a superior film, versus Don’t Breathe 2 not so much; but I did like the daughter aspect of the film. Idk why Jeremy found it to be so boring.
Just watched it right now. Grabbed it from the library and I really liked it. I liked the twist. I went in full opened minded and enjoyed every bit of it 😁
It missed out on a lot of the magic the first one had. Still worth it. I have to add as well- STILL, they wanted us to somehow feel bad for this blind guy… like absolutely not. Once you cross that path of sexual assault, there’s literally nothing you can do that’ll fix that.
Well I guess it wasn't sexual assault in usual terms for like gratification, pleasure, lust or anything. He wanted back a child that the woman took from and chose a demented root to do that. Lost a child can cause insanity.
Gotta say, I’m really morbidly curious as to how this movie makes the guy into the protagonist given what he tried to do in the first movie (and given how he now has a daughter in this one, how he’s apparently succeeded in his plan since the first movie…unless I’m misremembering something). Seems like it has the potential to be really fucked up…so yeah, I’m morbidly intrigued. Also, as a fun bit of tidbit information, for the longest time I kept getting the first movie mixed up with Lights Out, as they both came out around the same time and that movie’s title would have fit the first movie oh so well.
@@erikramaekers63 eh. Hard disagree. As much as I don't condone breaking into someone's house, their motivations were for an overall good reason. At least the 2 that lasted the longest. One was trying to help his friend get a better life. The other was trying to provide for her siblings. If you really felt the blind guy was the good guy and "justified", something is wrong with you. Comparing their actions, the blind guy was worse by a long shot.
@@kyleroberts1276 kind of is. These shows have murderers and evil people as protagonists as well. It is the same thing. No matter how much you do not want this
I wouldn’t say John Wick is unstoppable. He’s hyped up as unstoppable by both his enemies and allies, and live up to it to a certain extent, but the movies have always done a good job at showing that he’s not immortal. He can tire, be hurt, slown down, emotionally defeated, and definitely killed if he keeps pressing his luck against overwhelming odds.
id hardly consider this a sequel. there's almost no reference or tie ins to anything from the first movie. this could be an entirely different blind guy frankly
Movie tried to do its own Terminator 2. Except it forgot that their Terminator is a human which makes his actions from the first movie are a lot less forgiving.
So wait, he has a daughter in this movie? Am I to assume that she's the offspring of that turkey baster? And despite that happening, he's the protagonist now? Huh.
Saw it yesterday, I feel it’s a bit better than what you described it as. True it did kind of get bleh in the second half but it was still a good watch
I actually enjoyed this sequel too.. everyone is hating because its a sequel… i like the anti hero they did here but the movie does acknowledge that he is still a “monster” … this was only offensive for jeremy for whatever reason he cant have fun with the movie 😂😂😂
I loved the movie and I'm surprised most of the comments here disliked the movie. For me, it's a story about redemption, and the character development is awesome for me. He is redeemed by the love of the girl for him, despite him admitting he's a monster. I think it's really cool.
so a rapist who forcibly tried to impregnate a woman he kidnapped has been redeemed because he saved his adopted/kidnapped daughter? bruh lmao. ok dude
@@ashyslashy3636 what's wrong about a man trying to be a better person? In the first movie, he lost his daughter and filled his heart of revenge. In the 2nd movie, he's trying to be a good man. What's wrong with that?
everyone is such a bleeding heart stereotype in the comments section, yes sexual assault is horrible and never justified, but that isn't the focus of the movie, the blind man isn't trying to redeem himself. He is solely focused on giving the girl, who otherwise would have had a horrible life in a meth-house having god knows what done to her, a chance at learning tangible and useful skills and instincts. The fact that the girl wants to save him doesn't mean that she wants to love him and continue being raised by him, it just shows that she did value what he's done for her (keep in mind she knows nothing about his passed or experience with a turkey baster) and him dying at that time further gives her a chance at a better life which she clearly already wanted, given her interest in running away to the shelter. I thought it was an awesome movie with an interesting perspective on morality and sacrifice. personally I think making your own daughter be your heart donor is on a different level of fucked too. making the death of all parental influences so much more satisfying.

In fact, the ending of the first movie indicated that he might come after that woman who he wanted to impregnate. Where did that whole plot go? I guess it got lost somewhere, like The Last of Us Part 2 game we got, I feel like that is The Last of Us Part 3, maybe even Part 4.
Yeah, that was the big zinger and the end, and the writers kind of just…threw that away? Idk, so much bad writing in today’s media, just like the last of us 2.
@@Dylan-nq9yg I can imagine you might come up with some very creative ideas to flesh him out more, showing his struggles to locate her. I think that would even been an awesome plot. See him try, fail, come up with genius ideas for a blind guy.
I'd give this movie "a good time if you're drunk," because for all the stuff that didn't work in this movie, there was just as much that I dug. My biggest issue with them making the blind man the protagonist wasn't that they tried to humanize him, it was that it severely lowered the tension. In the first movie, the kids were totally outmatched by this guy, and so I was always afraid for what would happen if he found them. But in this movie, since I came into it knowing he's a badass, I felt that the bad guys ought to be more scared of him than he was of them. As such, I never felt that looming sense of dread that I did with the first one.
@@elliotjames5172 It was an accident and even so, the fact that you believe that it would still be okay for a man to kidnap and impregnate a woman against her will... fucking yikes, dude.
@arianagrande butera okay you literally have no idea what you are talking about. he kidnapped and impregnated the woman who accidently killed his daughter. again, does not give anyone the right to do horrible stuff to you, if that's your way of thinking, seek help. then when that woman died, he wanted to impregnate the burglar (main character). yeaah she was trying to rob him, but that STILL does not make it okay to assault someone. no one was trying to kill that man.
What I loved about this movie is that it really didn’t waste any time with boring information, like in a lot of movies two characters would just talk for 15 minutes about some useless stuff and then do it again for another 10 minutes in this movie all of the scenes are straight to the point and no time wasted
I really enjoyed this film, more than the first one because it’s more of an action than horror. And I don’t care what people say, but I liked the Blind man in this one, and I was rooting for him. (Yes, you can judge me and try telling me about the whole basement scene from the first one but I really didn’t care for that and thought it was unnecessary and was only there just to have something “horror” related)

This sounds exactly like what happened in Home Alone 1 and 2 lol. First movie has stakes involved when the robbers break in. The 2nd takes it to another location, and why the build up is there, when the robbers are in an abandoned house, it doesn't feel the same.
I liked the movie. It was different from the first and I can accept the attempt they made to make Norman a protagonist. He’s definitely horrid due to the first film and he’d be the first to tell you that, which he does pretty much in the film. Stephen Lang did a good job again with Norman. It’s up to anyone’s opinion if he redeemed himself or not at the end, which I think he did. He saved a young girl from a terrible fate and confessed to the horrible things he had done and told her to leave him due to what he was. He can be sympathised with when you think of everything he has gone through. Obviously that doesn’t excuse the turkey blaster stuff.
This was really enjoyable in theatres especially the really messed up scenes with Phoenix’s Mom However, i don’t really feel like the title of the movie (Don’t Breathe) really made sense in this movie… it didn’t have any purpose

well without going into the debate of the good guy bad guy, Don't Breathe is solid home invasion cum revenge story cum action thriller. It required some brain to write this type of story and deliver a screenplay that really puts it together so well. Twisted and brutal, Don't Breathe is both chilling and thrilling from start to finish delivering action, frights, and twists and turns along the way. Far better than I expected it to be. I give this a 7-7.5. This does make it to my top 5 of the year for the manner it executes its script and provides the emotional depth that usually these type of one sequence action thrillers do not have. Highly recommended.
I'm actually surprised how well written this turned out to be (never thought they'd be able to write a decent sequel at all). It keeps you thinking which character you should root for.. it was kinda like a Terminator 2 treatment but different. Now I have mixed/elusive feelings about Stephen Lang's character because of his actions in the first one (it's not justifiable like how Arnie's Terminator[s] was written) and that's just a FRESH feeling because I don't know what to expect if there's gonna be a next one.
I still want to know: did they not find out what happened in his basement at the end of the first movie? Surely the police would have a look around and there would be questions regarding all that they find.

@@samsherrington7423 forcibly impregnating someone is still a sexual assault. While it might not be rape in the traditional sense. It’s still a sexual violation. And still really hard/ nearly impossible to humanize a character like that. And still disturbing 😳
I really liked the film, while the turkey baster scene does make it seem impossible to turn him into an anti-hero, there have been anti heroes in the past that have committed far worse deeds off screen. Plus at the end he seems like he has a revelation.
I love how organic a lot of the characters felt. Antagonists feel so much more compelling, when they aren't just mustache twirling villains and this goes the extra mile by having two different sides that are both in the wrong being at each others throats for different reasons. I was really only rooting for the girl to get out of this awful situation alive and not completely mentally scarred and the rest was like seeing one deceptively powerful monster fight and kill a bunch of other monsters. It's was a great movie.
Honestly just going to see this for some gnarly kills. I’m hoping for a twist that villainfies Stephan Lang again, but from what I’ve heard, that’s not going to happen. Still, always up for some gory slasher action

I had a whole different plot in mind when I thought there was going to be a Don’t Breathe sequel. Basing from the ending of the first one, you would think that there would be a continuation to that (since that’s what the setting up looked like). Ngl, don’t know how they would do it, but I still would watch it and I think there was a potential storyline there that would have been thrilling to watch. After watching the sequel, I was a bit disappointed. I appreciate the sentiment of kinda thinking out of the box since there was a different approach in the sequel but imo it just didn’t work out. He’s an iffy character (it’s a mix of disgust and still kinda grateful he saved the kid) and the plot just wasn’t as stellar as the first. I wished there was more backstory that would have linked the first and second story.
I think this was like a critics review. It's wasn't necessary for sequel to have same plot of people getting trapped in the house and should have ended with one location film. However, it was one of the best non stop edge of the seat bloody action film. 1st act was amazingly fast paced and you need some time to relax that was given in the 2nd act and the film ended very well. For me Part 1 was great and part 2 was a badass sequel.
I agree. I watched Don't Breathe 1 & Don't Breathe 2 back to back. I enjoyed both movies. He is a believable villain & anti hero. Both story lines worked!
Great review!! Even though I haven't seen the movie yet, still was looking forward to watching, not expecting much now! & I figured it would not be as good as the 1st.
The dude that made the first film said he had a great idea for a second and that this would go down as one of the best horror sequels ever lol..... THIS IS WHAT THEY COME UP WITH?
What happened with this film is they saw that first one was a hit, 10M$ budget made a 13x that back, let's make a sequel... Makes sense or not, just make a sequel. Some movies just needs to be left alone man
Just saw the movie. Did anyone else notice how they just took Gary Oldman's "EVERYONE!" Scene from Leon the Professional? I'm paraphrasing here but, The lead villain is telling his lacky to get all the men together towards the end, the lacky asks which ones and he just says "ALL OF THEM!" (Or something like that) Exactly the same delivery and set up. Had us laughing our asses off at how blatant it was
The first movie did its job of explaining how this blind vet was a maniac and they did it well then i just don't understand why they gave it a sequel i mean what was there that needed to be explained in a part 2. But for some reason the writers decided to make this guy an anti hero of some sort which makes no sense the entire movie made no sense or is Hollywood running out of ideas?
They seemingly just wanted you to forget he was evil in the first one. I guess the ways I could feel like I could root for him was the fact that what the home invaders wanted to do to that girl were horrific. I guess as well in this film Stephen Lang wanted to protect the girl so because I wanted her to be safe, I wanted him to kill everyone.
Dang it. I LOVED the first one. Still gag whenever I recall the turkey baster scene. Gagged again when Jeremy mentioned it here. Such a friggin fun and exciting horror. Sequel-itis strikes again, I guess.
So Stephen Lang in Don't Breathe is basically the final boss and in Don't Breathe 2 he is the final boss when you unlock him as a playable character.

@@darrienca totally agree.
I have no right to say this since I didn't see the movie, but unfortunately many reviewers like Jeremy (And as the comment sections on this video shows) really didn't get your point about this movie.

@dflowers30 you can make evil characters into a protagonist. Nothing new
Problem with humanizing Stephen Lang's character is that twist in the second half of the first one.
Very true
My thoughts manifested. Without that twist in the first, these movies would be pretty damn solid

everyone is such a bleeding heart stereotype in the comments section, yes sexual assault is horrible and never justified, but that isn't the focus of the movie, the blind man isn't trying to redeem himself.

As such, I never felt that looming sense of dread that I did with the first one.

well without going into the debate of the good guy bad guy, Don't Breathe is solid home invasion cum revenge story cum action thriller.
Had us laughing our asses off at how blatant it was
Dude Kinda look like Gary Oldman too 😂
Time flies but your jacket is still cool!
So...if he has a daughter in this one, is it a prequel? Or like...did he get the turkeybasting done between 1 and 2
It’s not a biological daughter, he’s just raised her
Time flys with your reviews, The Crow
Can't believe I've been watching you for 9 years...
The story should’ve just been the Blind Man fighting someone who is equally skilled than him and that said person is the protagonist.
That would’ve been cooler to watch. Another blind army vet maybe lol. Or maybe the other dude is deaf, so blind vs deaf.
That's a bingo.
@@howtoeataham Yeah maybe like someone from his past or an entirely new character.
Been a fan since couples retreat and pandorum. You keep getting better and better Jeremy. Keep it up.
Jeremy it would be a big help if you were to enable subtitles in your videos :)
Wait for 1 or 2 day, they eventually come up.
So essentially, Steven Lang was to OP so the mods nerfed him. Got it.
Dang it. I LOVED the first one. Still gag whenever I recall the turkey baster scene. Gagged again when Jeremy mentioned it here. Such a friggin fun and exciting horror.
Sequel-itis strikes again, I guess.
