    You're incredible! As well as easy on the eye. A load of info like a pro. I owned the original good old fashioned Rancilio. Glad to see they upped their game especially with a dual boiler. I have owned the Rocket Apartamento heat-X. It was a sexy beast but in the end too many problems. Thanks, I'll be back.

    Hi Charlie. Thank you for a solid review - arguably the best review to date! And thank you for your comment on "time to 1st shot". Cannot believe that people wait 20 minutes, if 5 minutes will do just fine. With a bit of luck, our 230V power grid (Cape Town, SA) might also speed up things, compared to 110V 🤔
    So only decision left then is, Stainless Steel vs Black 🙂

    I'm considering this as dual boiler upgrade from an Ascaso Steel Uno PID. Also the insulated steam wand, at least on the Ascaso, is just a plastic tube inside the stainless steel tube, some people might not like that. Thanks for the video.

    • @user-ns4em5sk9b
      @user-ns4em5sk9b 10 місяців тому

      Probably not plastic but Teflon. But still the usual low budget 'no burn', hat I am happy, the Pro X has NOT.
      Pros of not having that: Better steam, nicer movement of the steam wand. I am coming from a machine which had 'no burn' and did not miss it at the Pro X one single day

    Awesome work, man. Love my SPX. I'm 3 months in with mine and haven't had a single hiccup and use it everyday for about 6 drinks and at least once a week as hard as your livestream. I generally tend to let mine warm up a bit longer than 5 minutes, just until both boilers are fully up to temp- usually 20 minutes just to aide in thermal stability. Thanks for commenting on the sound! We recently had a baby and there have been a few nights that I slept about 20 feet from the machine; my smart plug fires it up at 5am and that initial run of the pumps is jarring!
    I think the biggest competitor for this is really the La Spaziale Dream/Lucca series. The Elizabeth just doesn't have the track record of reliability over time (Lelit is a MUCH newer company and now owned by Breville) vs. these and certainly isn't even close on the build quality. The Dream/Lucca can have a preinfusion kit installed from the factory and ticks most of the same boxes for slightly more money (around $2000). Forr the 'junior' series dual boilers, these are my picks for longevity hands down. Breville Dual Boiler would be my pick for value:fun ratio, if I didn't need a machine to last me 10 years.
    Not sure if you mentioned it but the automatic backflushing is a really excellent feature I use daily on my machine. Appreciate the work! Also, did you mention if this was a paid review from Rancilio or if you were given the machine vs. paid for it with your own money?

    • @homecafecharlie

  • @3ede467

    I've got my Silvia for about a week now, installed the accessories bundle and dispersion plate from Pantechnicon Design, an IMS shower screen and a Cafelat silicone gasket and lowered the pressure to about 6.5 bars of static pressure and also upgraded to a Niche Zero grinder. This setup is the most beautiful I've ever had and I am so happy about the espresso that I can produce with it. The only things that bother me is that even the 3D printed replacement drip tray from Pantechnicon Design needs to be emptied frequently due to its capacity, that there is no LED light next to the group head and that the soft infusion is limited to 6 seconds only. But that is about it. It is probably the maximum that I can afford but I don't feel that I will miss anything in my espresso game for the next couple of years. It feels like a rock solid gaming PC that I can modify, adjust and repair myself. And I love the design that reminds me of an 80s workshop utility. I am so in love with it. ❤😊 Btw. I've got mine in white.

    I have my eye on a gaggia classic for entry level affordable espresso but thanks for the very informative video. Definitely sad they didn’t fix those things like the drip tray or how the steam wand sprays unless it’s in a cup. I saw gaggia’s are like $500 and never really considered one but suddenly I thought why not. Also looked at the $850 Silvia now you’ve got a new one the Pro X that’s cool. Glad you’re liking it. Looks fun. The Decent is limited to a minimum of 4 seconds preinfusion. I always disliked preinfusion until the DE but that’s cool to see how it’s useful in getting an even extraction. I didn’t know that cool 😎. Wasabi 🤙

    Sounds like a smokin deal. That price tho. I would consider it because I do love my regular original Silvia. 20 years old and trusty. I do my own pre-infusion by popping the brew button for a few seconds then wait 10 sec. then brew. Works like a charm. We acquired a gaggia retro and that is so simply made and parts galore. I need to rebuild it. The Silvia has parts all over the place too and super well supported. I support the good brands. I was hatting my loud sette 270wi and sent it back for $150 to get a rebuild and now it's quite quiet. Well supported no fuss. Parts are all over for those too. Win win win. TY coffee gods for keeping a thriving industry. Just don't make a subscription wifi for a feature on your machines ;) Like remote start on a car.

    • @taroman7100

      I do my own pre-inf as well. I just turn it off and count to six. What's the big deal? We owned a basic single boiler for twenty years. It was a little tank. The newer Rancilio seemed to be shorted on fabrication so I quickly got rid. This one is right at on the needle of my budget as I currently own a single boiler with thermo cover Quick Mill Silvano. It aint bad.

  • @Guitarorpheo
    @Guitarorpheo 2 роки тому +1

    It has an automated turn on setting?! OMG. I always, always wake up at 6:20 Am so to have the machine turn on at the same time I do is a game changer for me. My Silvia V1 (!!) died on me this week and I need a replacement. One cup with old Silvia took me 15 to 20 minutes start to finish; this machine appears to shave off at least minutes off of that. Meaning: time to exercise a bit, or sleep in.

  • @andrewelliott1939
    @andrewelliott1939 Рік тому +1

    This is the machine that I have been thinking of and this review has confirmed my thoughts.
    I agree that the pressure dial could be better located - maybe they were concerned about making the front panel too cluttered - and the drip tray, with its risk of spillage, is poor. The heat-proof steam wand is also an oversight.
    But the main thing is that the coffee is great, heats up quickly and it’s relatively simple to use - buttons rather than dials and levers.

    Great video, Charlie! Wondering if you could try to hack the soft infusion (make it longer than 6 sec) by stopping/interrupting your shot right at the 6 sec mark, before the 9 bar pressure kicks in, and subsequently starting a new shot cycle, essentially initiating soft infusion #2. I just ordered this machine and can't wait to start a new chapter. I'm retiring my old Breville DB after 10 yrs. Cheers!

    Thanks for your review Charlie! I trust your latte skills and have a question, what are your thoughts on dual thermoblocks (machine such as the Ascaso Steel Duo) versus dual boilers? Do you think you would get good results too with thermoblocks or is dual boiler a must have according to your experience?

    • @homecafecharlie
      @homecafecharlie  Рік тому +1

      Thermoblocks are definitely not as powerful as full steam boilers. I've never used one that gave me enough power to consistently do quality latte art. It's definitely possible but it's a handicap for sure.

    • @jonq8714
      @jonq8714 2 роки тому

      @@homecafecharlie it's quiet and fast, there retention is excellent and the grinds don't come out clumpy. Plus it's far heftier than I was expecting, it's a two hand operation to pick it up and move it. I had an Ascaso conical burr for years and it was loud, took forever, the retention was horrible and it was messy... so my coffee making experience has been greatly upgraded, while the shots I pull have been as well. What's really nice is that you have the option of upgrading the burrs in the future, which I'm not sure is always possible with conical machines. I love, love the DF64, and you simply cannot beat that price.

      Hey, thanks for the comment! I don't have the Silvia Pro X anymore unfortunately. I sold it when I left Japan because it was a 110v machine and the UK is 230 and would require a BIG (and expensive) transformer to operate, plus shipping costs back to England, so I sold it. But I loved the soft pre-infusion and basically always used it, and yes I do measure it in my shot times, but I often pull slightly slower shots (35-40s) cos I like a slightly higher extraction.

    HI Charlie great review, just have a question about the hot water dispenser. I have seen a clip of the machine making a lot of noise after dispensing hot water. It sounds like the boiler is being filled. I was hoping with this machine I would get rid of my kettle and use the hot water dispenser instead. Just don't worry about the noise level if wanting to use the hot water dispenser at night.

    • @homecafecharlie
      @homecafecharlie  Рік тому +1

      Yes it pulls water from the steam boiler and will probably refill it after use. It also can't dispense a big mug worth of hot water easily. It would probably run out if you had a giant 500ml+ mug or wanted to make 2 cups of tea. I would say a kettle would be much cheaper to consistently run 😉

So, your comparison at 7:51 is not really apples-to-apples - maybe a similar effect as the right picture could be obtained from the left picture by grinding coarser? It is not clear to me that the left picture shows more channeling, just a slower flow.

    I think the rubber seal is supposed to be placed without the basket on the oposite direction you put in on the video.

      @@mjriguero then that's also a bit of a pain because taking the basket out is pretty annoying. I usually just use the blind basket from my old Silvia in the bottomless (easier to remove)

    I could have afforded the Marcozzo micra but chose this instead. The fact that the Marcozzo locks features behind an app and internet/Bluetooth connectivity was a complete deal breaker. I want something I can use and pass down without having to worry about app updates and support. I don't want to have to grab my phone to adjust my machine.

      Could be so many things. Check out my video on how to dial in espresso, it should help you. If you aim for the timing 35-30 that will get you most of the way there!

    More than twice the price of a normal Silvia.
    Another let down the vibration pump makes a lot of noise.
    To adjust the boiler pressure is very laborious.
    Again the diptray is very clumsy.
    The steamwand isn't insulated.
    Limited pre infusion.
    At this price tag I am expecting both more improvements and refinements.

    • @homecafecharlie

      Totally different machine though. Silvia is a single boiler and limited functionality. The Pro X was a massive step up!

      @homecafecharlie  Рік тому +1

      It wasn't for me. Because of efficiency it only needed to be emptied once a week or something. It's a very minor thing in reality, just a bit annoying from a design perspective but it was never an actual problem.
