Plastic Beach is the third studio album by British virtual band Gorillaz. It was released on 3 March 2010 by Parlophone internationally and by Virgin Records in the United States. Conceived from an unfinished project called Carousel, the album was recorded from June 2008 to November 2009, and was produced primarily by group co-creator Damon Albarn. It features guest appearances by such artists as Snoop Dogg, Gruff Rhys, De La Soul, Bobby Womack, Mos Def, Lou Reed, Mark E. Smith, Bashy, Kano and Little Dragon.
Plastic Beach received mostly positive reviews, and was later named one of the decade's best albums by several critics. In 2020, the album was ranked at 74 on the 100 Best Albums of the Century list by Stacker.[1] The album debuted at number two on the UK Albums Chart, selling approximately 74,432 copies in its first week. It debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 with 112,000 copies sold in its first week; overall it reached the top 10 in 22 countries in total.
Empire Ants is seriously one of the best songs ever made
Easily

YES
You're wrong.
It IS the best song ever made.

Haha that’s me right now…I went straight to Rhinestone eyes to see his reaction. Love these guys
Sameee
I remember reading that Bobby went so hard on his part in Stylo that he basically passed out and when he came to the first thing he saw was Damon offering him a banana.
RIP Bobby Womack
Damon tells him afterwards: you’re my hero man
Bobby: then dont kill your hero!
The Gorillaz name makes a lot more sense now
I’ve been a hardcore fan for a while and I never knew this but I’m so happy I do now that’s hilarious lmao
Yeah I heard that story too. They didn’t know Womack was diabetic.
I find it so funny that of all things, he's giving him a banana lol
This album is, in my opinion, the most complete, diverse, and incredible record I’ve ever heard. This is undeniable a 10/10.
For me it would be a 10/10 if you replace sweepstakes with do ya thing
@@oranjoe69 fr do ya thing is sooooo good
Yo 🔥ua-cam.com/video/rdJ9bsN7JAw/v-deo.html,
There is something about the last track of the record that keeps me from giving it a 10/10. Apart from that it is still a masterpiece
@@oranjoe69 wdym, sweepstakes is amazing
I genuinely believe the empire ants is one of the greatest songs ever made and my mind will not be changed about it
Agreed, it simply doesn’t get better. Empire Ants is peak music, the high that song gives me is unreal, even sober
I LOVE IT SOOO MCUH
no other song can invoke the feelings that this song can
since i've heard it years ago it's still my favorite, it feels otherwordly in such a unique way that it's perfect
dude i just discovered it on the way home from work today. HOLY FUCK!!! SO GOOD
@@catswork try "rip" by playboi carti on full blast while drunk driving
Idk if you guys know this, but... in the begining of "Glitter Freeze", after the "Where´s North from here?" The synth plays a Morse Code that spells out "Plastic Beach".
I just recently discovered this and it blew my mind it's fucking awesome.
Holy shit
Awesome ! Thx
whaaaa omg great fun fact thats awesome
I didn’t know that!! That’s awesome
Woww for my least favorite song on the album, that's pretty impressive and neat.
Pirate Jet feels so *spiteful* I love it.
It's like 2D is just squinting at you, as of he was saying "Look what we did. Are you happy?"
FACTS
11/10 album. Someone who sees the value and quality of Empire Ants is an instant friend of mine.
If you like that song listen to child of vision by supertramp, I find it very similar to it
Then we would be great friends, Empire Ants is my favorite song of all time. There’s something so magical about how this song makes you want to dance and cry at the same time from all the emotions
First time I heard Empire Ants was when Gorillaz was barely on my radar (despite obviously being popular) and I loved it on first listen
I'll give it a solid 1000/10
I know a lot of people consider Demon Days to be Gorillaz' peak but for me it's easily Plastic Beach. All the features on this album are insane: Snoop Dogg, Mos Def, Little Dragon, Lou Reed, etc. "Empire Ants" is one of my favorite songs of all time
Agreed. It might just be which album came out when you were most impressionable. I was 18 when this came out and is the gold standard for albums to me.
Demon days will always be their prime. So many better features especially MF DOOM
its more fun but demon days was definitively the best album of that decade
I’m very split on demon days vs plastic beach they’re both so good
I really don't see what's so special about it. 'But, maybe that's because I've been listening to electronic music since the mid 90s and have been listening to allot more "detailed" tracks with lots of elements in them. Gorillaz' music still sounds like it was made in the late 90s, but maybe that's what they are going for, with analogue synth sound
honestly, empire ants is more of an experience than a song. always makes me feel like I'm zooming through space at the end.
Yeah but not as much as Seattle Yodel
@@najlis1784 lmaooo
on melancholy hill is my favorite song of all time it brings so much emotion and is so warm and comforting
same
This and Empire Ants are masterpieces
its nostalgia overload for me, very warm but also so sad and melancholic
Melancholy Hill feels very nostalgic, but that's the weird part. The first time I listened to the song was a few months ago, yet it feels like I've known it ever since I was a kid. Like wtf?? Gorillaz knows some black magic and I'm here for it.
My girlfriend and I consider it 'our song'.
8:05. I can confirm this to be true. I saw Gorillaz play a couple weeks back and when Rhinestone eyes played thousands of people sang the chorus and it was magical.
To this day that is still my best concert experience, being at the front of the crowd with everyone jumping up and down singing along to the Rhinestone Eyes chorus, truly AWESOME!
ITS THE ABSOLUTE BEST PART OF THE SHOW
Rhinestone Eyes has always been my favourite Gorillaz song, so seeing them play it live and hearing the crowd all sing the chorus was an unbelievable experience.

Yea same. Top 5 all time song imo. True masterpiece
Yo 🔥ua-cam.com/video/rdJ9bsN7JAw/v-deo.html,
mine too!!!
the transition from Superfast Jellyfish to Empire Ants is so damn slick
Rhinestone Eyes is such a devastating yet groovy song. The synth chorus makes you wanna get up and dance but the lyrics are so melancholic and confronting.
You have to keep the 2010 Alternative Dance energy going and do This is Happening by LCD Soundsysten. 2010 was really an incredible year for music.
Also Sound of Silver while ur at it lol another amazing album
I just know his dad would LOVE LCD Soundsystem.

for me, To Binge is the most underrated song on this album, it just gives me this melancholic but chill vibe that I can't describe and Yukimi Naganos voice is just perfect
Murdoc described it best in his NME Plastic Beach guide: "A Hawaiian version of melancholy, yeah? You don’t see a lot of miserable Hawaiians, do you? It’s not known for its grim outlook on life."
It’s my favorite Gorillaz song for sure. Perfect duet with fantastic lyrics and meaning behind them. Give me chills every time.
i adore this song as well
To binge got me into listening to little dragon. I love her voice
My all time favorite song
I have to say, Plastic Beach is the best album Gorillaz have ever made.

Demon Days is better
I was Tripping on LSD and I remember listening to Empire ants and that song Just transcended me while holding me in our reality. I don't know how to explain it, but that song makes me so nostalgic. I love it.
14:13 and that ladies and gents is when Dad first heard Little Dragon... ahhhh I wish I could go back and hear her angelic vocals match a synth for the first time!! 'Ritual Union' so damn good, and their 'New Me, Same Us' 2020 album is a BANGER project
Every album of little dragon has at least 2 or 3 incredible songs. Definitely worth digging into. The last 3 songs on machine dreams are some of my favorite
I wanna start getting into Little Dragon, where should I start?
Blinking pigs, come home, fortune, ritual union, crystalfim, twice, no love, constant surprises, place to belong, scribble paper, klapp klapp, and a lot of the new album are songs that stood out to me at a look through.
Enjoy
Oh and cat rider
Was SBTRKT for me.
As snoop once said “welcome to the world of the plastic beach”
Iconic song and album
Your dad is so fucking smart 😭 there are videos from people in the crowd of just everyone singing the synth chorus to Rhinestone Eyes LMAO The whole crowd just “DUHDUH DUH DUH DUH-“,,, I do have to say, the way your dad is able to guess the stories or the intentions (or whatever I’m trying to say💀) of whatever you’re showing him, about every single time I watch these videos, is incredible. He breaks it all down to a T practically
"When you hear snoop, it's a comfort thing" couldn't agree any fucking more, having him on this album was such a great idea and I love that they did it. Much love for yalls reaction this album holds a special place in my heart
I probably haven’t listened to Empire Ants since I used to play Gorillaz 24/7 back in 2015, but man when it started all those emotions just came flooding back, I could feel the tears forming and the moment Little Dragon’s vocals start, the floodgates were opened
Same man, the vocals give me insane feels. Something about it, it sounds desperate and haunting in a way
Same! I saw them live during the Plastic Beach tour and at the climax Damon Albarn just spun around and around, it was amazing
this channel is the closest thing to a time machine. reliving the memories of when we first heard these classic albums. times were good in 2010.
Today is 13th anniversary of Plastic Beach. I feel so incredibly dumb for not appreciating this album sooner than I did. I was more so a Demon Days fan obsessed with Feel Good Inc, and Clint Eastwood fan. But now after listening through Gorillaz’s discography, this might actually be No.1 for me now. I’m really impressed with Damon Albarns work on this. From Superfast Jellyfish to Empire Ants, and to On melancholy hill. Sweepstakes is underrated. Empire Ants makes me wanna tear up ๐·°(৹˃̵﹏˂̵৹)°·๐
No.1 Plastic Beach
No. 2 Demon Days
No. 3 The Now Now
The now now hella underrated
@@0screenager0lil too lo fi for me, I really like song machine tho, I feel like if i went back and listened to Humanz I might appreciate it more
There weren’t too many albums that I would just listen to like every song on repeat when I was younger like this one. Broken, On Melancholy Hill, Empire Ants, Superfast Jellyfish, To Binge, Rhinestone Eyes and White Flag I would play in middle school just over and over and over
glad your dad adores empire ants as it is my favorite song of not only the album but in gorillaz discogs ever.
21:24 this moment accually got me tearing up, what a album and what a video man. Thank you for this channel Kevin and Connor
same here!
i watched them live and i legit cried in this song. best concert of my life.
on melancholy hill is the first gorillaz track i’ve ever discovered. for me, it is by far the most nostalgic song. i always get chills listening to it since it brings me back to my childhood, watching the music video and listening to it on mtv music when i was 8.
God such a good music video that was too.
Gorillaz has such a magical way with their collaborations. The artists they bring in fit so perfectly every single time. In their entire discography that spans more than twenty years, I can't remember the last time a collaboration with Gorillaz didn't work. Such a phenomenal band, wow.
Yo 🔥ua-cam.com/video/rdJ9bsN7JAw/v-deo.html,
They made CHAI and Jpegmania work together, how is that possible??
@@sofaking5733 that's the neat part, i have no clue

I’m so intrigued to see how their colab with bad bunny is gonna be
i love how he recognizes all the synths and that it takes him back to that time. For me synths are my favorite, and to hear him name Daft Punk and Depeche Mode brings me joy because they are apart of my top 10 bands list (obviously including Gorillaz too). But glad to hear he's having fun with a little familiarity and new vibes... You should definitely show him Daft Punk's Discovery album next!
The relationship you two have as a father and son when it comes to sitting down, talking about and enjoying music, really warms my heart. It's exactly what I hope to have with my future kids as well. Music is such a huge part of my life, having spent my whole life listening to and playing it, and large parts of my life studying it.. and I just want my kids to get to share in that joy, that wonder, those beautiful moments and emotions you can't really put into words.
Definitely my favorite Gorillaz album - such a unique/plastic sound that perfectly compliments the themes of the project. The visuals are outstanding too
On Melancholy Hill is my all time favorite song for all the reason's you mention. It came out during a time in my life where I was just kinda taking a beating emotionally. But when I heard it I couldn't help but feel warm inside despite how sad I was. When I hear it now I remember those times but it somehow makes me feel happy and hopeful for the future.
Agreed, Around this time last year I was in the same situation you were in. Such a warm and beautiful song…
dude this is so moving (empire ants)
like your dad said, i also had tears in my eyes when the vocals hit in the second part.
and i also got tears when i heard and felt your dad describing it.
i feel truly understood and touched. wonderful work to share this. big ups
If I need to feel the shivers or some have emotional awakening .. Empire Ants comes on now :)
This album had multiple songs on it where I (a 19 year old raised on country music up until demon days) would find myself saying “wait, music can be like THAT??”
This album RIPS.
Demon Days is AMAZING
I can't really put my finger on it, but To Binge really just tickles my brain in all the right places, It definitely my favorite on this album
Gorillaz is a band I will NEVER get sick of, and I love seeing videos like this and the one you guys did with Demon Days. It's comforting finding out other people enjoy them as much as I do!!
I commented on another video how I couldn't wait for your father to react to Empire Ants and I wasn't let down. His reaction is the same exact to my own when I first heard it. Such an amazing track.
Albarn’s opus and a conceptual masterwork. The subject matter, the crafting of the world, the production. Superfast into Empire is a stroke of absolute genius. The hopelessness of the subject matter, while you’re caressed by the beauty of the sound invokes the exact feeling it’s aiming to produce via the words and turns it into a feeling. Unapologetically pulls you into acknowledging the reality of the world.
Album is incredibly cinematic too, so easy to picture the Gorillaz washing up on plastic beach, defeated and withdrawn. Making use of the technology of the island to create songs to express those feelings. Rhinestone, Superfast, Empire, Melancholy Hill, Nature, Sweepstakes. The conceptual through-line of this album is almost unparalleled.
Love this comment ❤️
mb for all the haters out there but sweepstakes is the most underated song in this album. it perfectly shows how music cant be complete without all the parts. the beginning is weird and uncomfortable but the more the add the more the track becomes enjoyable until its a fkg bop
Totally. Took me a long time to warm up to it,it is fire. By the end Im so charged I feel like I can sprint through a wall. It’s a mess if im on a run or something and this is on.
Empire Ants is just one of those songs that makes me transcend this earth. One of the most amazing tracks I've ever heard!
i saw gorillaz live back in august. out of all the setlist rhinestone eyes , on melancholy hill and empire ants got the best crowd response. crowd was pretty lit the whole show tho. one of the best concert experiences i’ve ever had.
Empire Ants is peak music. There’s something so magical about the way that it makes me feel and I can’t quite describe it. This song should be in the history books, it’s just so euphoric
