Do you react to the color purple or are you too sensitive for it?
On the interview thing, we live in such a victim-blaming society. Instead of confronting the fact that there's evil in this world that has gone out of control, people would rather ask victims why they weren't just smarter, faster, stronger, etc. Especially with women, especially with mothers.
People ask those questions because they are trying to help. They get told the story and they think about what could've been done to prevent it and what can be done to not make it happen again. Blaming and asking questions to show concerns are two different things. Now if they said, "Oh it's your fault you should've shot them", that's victim blaming, but if they ask stuff like "Why did you walk home alone?" They're trying to get an understanding of how it happened. Their semantics may sound like they're blaming you but that may not be their intention at all.
intentional or not, “why’d you walk home alone” is literally victim blaming lmao. impact trumps intention. yes evil people exist and will exist no matter what and things can and should be done to make sure you’re not in a bad situation. but once that situation has occurred, what good does it accomplish to ask a stupid question like “why were you walking home alone”. worms for brains.

It doesn’t matter if someone thinks they’re trying to help, focusing on why the victim didn’t do things right to avoid being preyed on is literally victim blaming intentional or not.
thank you to the people who responded already @@asian-americanwithanopinio8954 i work in the media as a journalist and as a public relations manager, i've also studied media through history. i understand how these things are framed and the media has a very long history of doing this to victims. when people say stuff like "rape culture" and "victim blaming culture" these are not just buzzwords. these things are so ingrained in us that it's become a circle of the media asking questions the audience wants to know answers to and if the audience is victim-blaming then the media will also do that.

As a girl, the “Be nice” comment was drilled into me my whole childhood. I was always too afraid to make a scene if I was uncomfortable as a kid, I’m glad things are changing though.
I agree and loved that line, because it's a very real reality for many girls.
The thing is she was 17 right. Tbh, I’d help him find a dog… maybe not go into a building, but we don’t know how he captured her exactly.

I know it seems odd that she would expect Old Nick to take Jack to the ER, but that’s what happened in the Fritzl case. A dad in Germany locked his daughter in their basement for almost 25 years and had seven kids with her. He took one to the Dr when she was really ill and I think that led to their discovery.
Yeah, the plan is NUTS. But I think when Old Nick shut the power off to punish them, it really got her thinking. What if he got in a car accident or had a heart attack or something? They’d starve to death in there. She isn’t even allowed to have scissors (hence Jack’s long hair) so she can’t just fight him or anything. I think she maybe thought there was a pretty good chance Old Nick would come back and kill her, but I think at that point she figured at least maybe Jack could get away and wouldn’t have to grow up in Room anymore (or possibly die if something happened with Old Nick)
Also Old Nick had told her that he was jobless and couldn’t find a job so she knew that his money was eventually going to run out. And what would happen then? In all likelihood ON would have either killed them or let them starve to death rather than let them go. She knew that staying in room was no longer an option and she had to get at least Jack out before the end comes.
My thoughts Exactly
The fritzl case happened in Austria not Germany.
It’s crazy to think that Jacob was only 8 years old when he did this movie. He was/is far beyond his years in his acting. Even though it’s such a sad story, it’s one of my favorite movies because the performances in it are so amazing.
While I think Brie winning awards for this performance was deserved, Jacob getting snubbed at the Oscars was unfair. It was a dual performance, where without one, the other wouldn’t exist. ❤
In the book she did try to escape once by hitting Old Nick with the toilet lid, but he stopped her and broke her arm (which never healed properly). After having Jack, she couldnt risk Old Nick hurting him. But once she find s out he has been laid off for 6 months she gets desperate enough to come up with the escape plan because she realizes that Old Nick might kill them/let them starve since he cant afford to "keep them" anymore.
I remember watching the movie by accident and it has stuck with me since. I had so many emotions, truly a rollercoaster.
SAMEEE the cover looked so cute to me but I had no idea what the movie was about. Very happy I watched it though.

Same! I still get so anxious when watching the scene of jack escaping, I’ve seen this movie several times but every time i watch it i think what if he doesn’t escape even though i know he does. That scene does a great job at building tension with the music swelling and the blurriness from jacks pov

The comment from the doctor about getting Jack out while he’s still “plastic,” is just about his ability to comprehend the trauma. The fact that he’s not lashing out now that they’re free, shows that he didn’t really understand much of their situation. Hopefully that means he’ll have a well-adjusted life moving forward. As a C-PTSD sufferer, it’s extremely hard to get over childhood trauma when it lasts far longer than your “plastic” ages.
Both Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay give outstanding performances in this movie. I know I’m in the minority but I believe Larson definitely deserved her Oscar win. It’s a tough movie to watch. Just going to leave my desperate plea for Good Omens now. Love y’all!

I don’t remember who else was nominated that year but I remember she was getting some undeserved hate during that awards season. I’ve never watched any of the Marvel Universe movies but from what I’ve read she has received some hate and resentment for her role as Captain Marvel. I don’t know anything about that movie but I think it made a shit ton of money. I like her though.

The way I cried when I first saw this movie. 😭😭😭 especially the interview when they asked her why she never sent Jack away. The way her voice cracked at “but he had me”, her saying she’s not a good enough mom and he says “but you’re ma”, the quote that ended with “but that’s okay, because it’s still just you and me”
Like Joy, I also have a son, he’s my only kid. I also had him very young and it’s just been me and him for most of his life. So the mother/son relationship of this movie just tugged so hard at my heart strings. 😭❤️❤️
Jacob Tremblay is amaaaaazing. He’s also in Wonder and The Book of Henry. I highly recommend those both if you haven’t seen them already.

Jacob is definitely a scene stealer!!!! Even the couple of minutes he was in Doctor Sleep as “Baseball Boy”, he sent chills down my spine. Definitely extremely talented.
This movie really would not work as well without the rawness of both Brie Larson and Jacob trembley performances also he should have been nominated at least just a very touching film and his stay a reminder to really live and enjoy life to the fullest when you have the chance to do so
I would never have classified this movie as a thriller, it's for sure a drama. Either way, you totally called it with Jacob Tremblay's performance, and seeing this through the eyes of a 5 year old was so interesting. I ended up reading the book this was based on and they spent a lot more time in the room than what it felt like in the movie but I suppose it would've been hard to keep it interesting in a movie with how mundane and repetitive their life was until they finally escaped. Good movie though, but yeah not one I think I could watch easily again or often.

i love the way this movie plays with perspectives. before they leave room, the space feels almost incredibly big and spacious because that's all jack knows. but then after they leave room and jack gets to see how big the world is, we get to truly see how small it actually was. it's incredible filmmaking and it's definitely one of my best actress winner performances
I always avoided this movie because I knew it'd be dark. I didn't know what I was missing. Both of the main actors' performances were incredible.
This book to film adaptation was everything the book is. The acting. The writing. The insane amount of trauma and viewing it through a child’s eyes of innocence is incredible. It breaks my heart knowing this happens to women and children every day. Keep alert of your neighbours report suspicious behaviour and activity. Be kind and gentle to one another.
reporting on people for anything certain demographics imagine as suspicious is how innocent people get killed
look out for yourself and your neighbors. look out for your fellow human beings. but practice self awareness and self improvement and don't project personal bias onto blameless people who are not any threat to themselves or others ✌️
I didn't watch this 2015 movie when it was released b/c of the content. I watched it in 2020. It's such an emotional movie. Brie Larson & Jacob Tremblay were phenomenal in their roles. It's just so unfathomable to believe this actually happens so often. That there are such monsters in this world.
100% agree! This hits so hard as a german because I remember the Fritzl Story as well as Natasha Kampusch, both are horrendous yet absolutely real. Stories like these need to be told unfortunately, because evil like this exists.
The whole “Be nice” is crazy. When I was 14 I traveled for the first time by myself from my country, Argentina, to England (14 hour flight approx). I had to sit next to a 50 year old man who ''wanted to become my friend'' for the whole flight. During the night, he put his head on my shoulder trying to sleep on it and constantly tried to get closer to me. I remember the flight attendant at some point noticed I was super uncomfortable and asked if everything was okay, I was almost crying but couldn't get the words out of my mouth to actually tell her, because for some stupid reason I didn't want to make the man feel awkward, so I just said yes. If I ever have a daughter I hope she understands that it's okay to not “Be nice” all the time. Anyways, loved the video ❤

At the end, when Jack says to Ma, "say bye bye to room" it felt as though he were telling her to let the whole effect of "room" go and say goodbye to the whole evil experience. Just a thought. Thanks for such a thoughtful reaction!
Another child actor who's gone on to do a lot of great work is Nicholas Hoult. He was 12 in About A Boy and did such a good job. I love that movie, it's touching and hilarious.
Room is based on the novel by Emma Donoghue. "Donoghue conceived the story after hearing about five-year-old Felix in the Fritzl case."
I have not forgotten this film since I saw it, the way its all through the young boys view really sticks with you
Jaycee Dugard is a reference for this too - or at least it's one of the things I thought of. There are many other similar stories. Jaycee was kept in a shed in a backyard and had multiple children from the monster who abducted her as a child. She was rescued semi-recently - thanks to two campus cops whose spidey sense went off when they met the monster on campus. They knew something wasn't right with the guy.
I believe it has been mentioned that the Josef Fritzl case is what inspired this movie, although the case you mentioned is more similar. The Josef Friztl case is so much worse and sick, if thats even possible

Movie is inspired on a real case that was so much worse than this. A FATHER locked in his biological daughter for 20 years in the basement and repeatedly assaulted her causing her to give birth to multiple children that were also locked and had never left the basement. There’s a lifetime movie closer to the real case you guys should watch. Even that movie isn’t as bad as the real case because in real life she had more children than the movie showed. Heartbreaking. But she survived as so did most children.

I remember first watching this movie a couple years ago and thinking how weird it was how much of the movie was out of the room. But then rewatching it you realize it’s because it’s only the beginning of their story and their healing.

This is definitely the kind of movie you love but never wanna watch again lol. I sincerely appreciate how this movie doesn’t just end with them escaping. It’s so realistic. This shit is TRAUMATIZING and life does not just go back to normal and I love that they portrayed it in a realistic way.

This movie is based on a book, "Room" by Emma Donoghue. I read it a couple years or so before seeing the movie, and I was completely blown away by it. It was one of those books that just stay with you, where I would sometimes think about whole passages and paragraphs of it, and it would bring tears to my eyes all over again.
So when I heard they were making a movie out of the book, I was worried about it, because where on earth do you find a child actor good enough to play Jack? And I was worried they'd try to turn the story into some kind of "suspense" thriller and end up losing all the heart, grit, heartbreak, and emotional density of the story. There is obviously HUGE amounts of suspense in the story (the first time reading about Jack's escape, I don't think I breathed, and I've never read words on a page so fast in my life!) But I didn't want them to cheapen the rest of the story just to get to make it more "action-y". You know?
But I needn't have worried. This movie is an absolutely beautiful interpretation of the novel. They cast it PERFECTLY. Brie Larson is stunning in her portrayal of the layer upon layer of conflicting emotions Joy would be going through. And Jacob Tremblay is an absolute gift of an actor - to have that kind of emotional depth and that level of acting instinct at EIGHT years old?! Just incredible. Love this movie so much, and your reaction was great. 😊

This is one of those movies that has stuck with me since I first saw it and every time I think of it I get a bit teary. I’ll never be able to watch it again outside of reactions like these, but it’s so well done.

Yeah, Jacob's performance is up there with Haley Joel's in The Sixth Sense.
In the book, Room had a double lock....the keypad on both the outside and inside, and then a padlock that only opened from the inside. She could not reach thhe skylight, which was bulletproof, or unscrew it from the inside. She used a spoon to try and dig out from underneath, but when she finally did get to ground level, she noted that there was a heavy steel wire mesh laid underneath the floor. One more thing you might have missed....when she confronts Old Nick about Jack, she said "You killed my babies." That's the only reference in the movie that indicated Jack was not her first child. He would have had a sister two years older than him, if she had not been stillborn. (She also explains to her mother...not Jack...that she wasn't sure if the baby had been stillborn or not, and I'll just leave all the little implacations that may or may not mean for you to ponder on._)
I have a film rec, it’s another one of the best child acting ever. called “the fall”. I don’t wanna spoil what it’s really about but I just think you would love it. they spent 17 years searching for physical locations to shoot because everything is shot in camera for real and it’s absolutely stunning. But it’s also just a very funny sad emotional story.
I remember saying this movie without even knowing anything about it or even watching the trailer and I was frustrated with a lot of people in the movie because they were either unsympathetic or trying to push Jack and his mother too be happy. I know someone who their family was on the news and she and her siblings were rescued when she was 29 and I can't even imagine living so long in hell and when you get out people are telling you to be happy but there is so much more going on internally that you just can't express I just feel like this movie was more about adjusting and readjusting into a society that has moved on when your life was halted and I think this is a very powerful movie

His story on there shook me , his scream had me everywhere but that’s just how good of an actor he is!
Brie Larson is one of my favorite actresses. Another one of my fave movies that she was in is "Short Term 12" in that movie her character and her boyfriend work at a foster care facility for at risk teenagers. It's a drama with a lot of good emotional scenes. Idk why the movies not more talked about. I thought it was so good. I would love to see a reaction to it someday.

27:17 She wasn't right saying that, but if women weren't socialised to be submissive, trusting, nice, kind, caring, sweet and passive from a very young age, less things like this would happen. Of course it's the perpetrator's fault 100%, but girls wouldn't be that easy of a target if they were taught to say no, stand their ground and fight. An all around devastating situation and ALL women's biggest fear.

I came across this movie by accident and was so shocked by what the plot was and I enjoyed it so much. So so well done and great acting.
The moment I saw Jacob Tremblay in this I knew we were in for incredible things from him as an actor.
The novel this movie is based on, was inspired by the very real case of Elisabeth Fritz. The true story is even darker though, she was held captive by her own father, horrific.
I’m so happy to see this. Room is a brilliant movie and people need to know about it!

Jacob is a crazy good actor. His part in Doctor Sleep was too too real, I feel like he is one of the only child actors that could give that performance and not be scarred by it.

This movie never fails to make me cry my eyes out!
The part where Joy yells at her mom about not letting the man with the dog get her if not for "your voice in my head telling me to be nice" is a thing that a lot of girls are conditioned into. We're taught that being nice and pleasant matters more than any other instinct we have, and it can definitely be used against us sometimes. Joy's poor mom didn't deserve to have that thrown in her face, but Joy deserved to be able to say it. Boys aren't taught to ignore their own self-interest to please others quite the same way (not that it can't happen, but not in the same way) and Joy's comment there is definitely referencing that.
this is like the 3rd time watching this movie. 1st was at the cinema, 2nd was a few months later when I bought it on DVD and watched it with my mom. never watched it again. i just own it.

Jacob was also in the movie Wonder. Another great performance by him. Other kid performances that are outstanding are the kids in The Impossible; Tom Holland in particular. Also Freddie Highmore was very good in August Rush.

A lot parents and people think that the world is actually a good/nice place with good-intention folks, and that to be so lalalala-ladida-happy-go-lucky-smile-always-to-everyone-be-kind, etc will make your life better, get you closer to ppl (aka randos) or solve your problems and everything will be alright. Puhlease! And this is marketed to women/females more so than men.

I was bawling the entire time watching this. I'm a single mom to a 6yr old daughter so I related too much and imagining if it was us in that situation. I love that this movie shows more of what happens after the fact. it's not just a happy ending after being rescued there is so much mental trauma that you would have to work through. The movie "Stockholm, PA" is similar showing what the victim goes through after being rescued. Also another movie based off a true story thats super messed up is " The Girl in the Basement" Room wasn't based off a true story it was based off a fiction book. I own the book but haven't read it yet. I'm sure there are similiar stories to this however.

In the Fritzl case, the oldest child was in the cell at 19 years old when they were finally freed. I imagine that because of the conditions the older children are too malnourished to be able to take on an adult man either way. It’s really sad and horrific.
I've read this book. It's written from the perspective of the child and I remember some ppl (book snobs) having a problem with reading from the child's point of view

What motivated me to write this comment is your question "was it based on a true story?" and although there is no one event this is based on I can tell this is based on experiences of real survivors like myself. Things worth pointing out from my point of view who unfotunetly relates to Joys character:
-You mention how the plan doesnt make sense and how Joy needs to "take it easy" with Jack while explaining stuff and ,what I hate when people say the most: "why dont they do ..." or "I would just...". Stuff like that are just hard to hear. The desperation and fear isnt best combo for great plans and being constantly in fight or flight makes people not so rational.
-The story doesnt have a happy ending because "they escaped". Thats what I find valuable. People often act like we're "saved" when our abuser is in prison, when in reality, just like Joy, many of us struggle the rest of our lives, manyeven taking it.
I am grateful to be safe and alive but there is nothing good about traumatic experience and this movie focuses on that. Loved the reaction guys, more movies like this one please.

It’s rare for child actors to be so good and steal the movie but he did great and other than him my other favorite child actors are Dakota fanning and Haley Joel Osment. All of their movies were great

Last week I listen a podcast and one woman (she is a teacher on kindergarden) she was talking about how the new little Kids (they born into the years of the lock out for the pandemic) didn't know how to use stair, go up, go down, how to climb it, crazy right?
Like we use those a lot! How they don't know? I'm mean I know why, but that was my first thought when I heard about that
For us something so normal, that lwt me thinking and the plot on this movie is something like that, on Jack's perspective about what he knows, thinks and discover, us like adults think about how absurd is something but for a kid is everthyng.
Fun fact: Since this movie is filmed in GTA of Canada, they had filmed a scene of the movie in Bramalea City Centre Mall which is where I used to work and I saw them filming but they cut the scene off the movie.
