@@ModelMinutes I'd like to see a 'starter modelling [tools] set' so you could get the right tools to start the hobby, such as a knife, tweezers, sanding sticks, sprue cutters, etc all in one purchase. Or starter paint sets with common colours for air force, vehicle, navy and civilian models. Common items might be skin and maybe decal fix, clear glue for transparent parts.
It looks good Matt! I like the starter sets because they do have a simpler model and for the first time modeler this is a big help. Thanks for sharing this neat tutorial.
It has been 20+ years since I built a model kit. But now I'm on it again! I have this kit but as you mention its a bit pricey for its quality. I do not own a "modern" Airfix kit but I heard that they are much better now. And as you mention this model is 25+ years old so you can't complain there to much except for the price. I see its a starter kit for me to see how well I can do it for being the first kit in 20+ years. I do remember that I was not particularity good at paint jobs, I have never painted using a air brush, but I guess its easier to get it right then wrong comparing to only using manual painting. But all this was before youtube/internet era and you could not get any tips except from magazines and in writing or perhaps hands on if you knew somebody that where skilled in building. Now its whole different world out there and its much easier to get to the knowledge and see how things are done.
If you're in the UK, Aldi and Lidl have had some airfix starter sets in recently for £5, most of those are recent releases (aircraft wise) so would be good examples. I agree with you about the internet, it's part of the reason I started my channel. I couldn't find many "simple" or "basic" modellers so I started my own one :)
@@ModelMinutes I'm in a country in which (some) Americans think that there polar bears roam freely in the street ;P I'm clearing the undercarriage now, does the undercarriage for the nose wheel look a bit odd and schizophrenic to you too? From one side (Viewing it from the for instance the left side) One thing just above where the wheel is going to be put in place the thing goes up in a 45 degree angle. But if you look at from the right side instead it begins at the top and goes down in 45 degree angle. This might be a bit of nit picking but it kind of annoys me a bit. I don't see any easy way of fixing that. Or maybe its meant to be that way?
@@ModelMinutes I did jump to conclusion it should be as it is. I have looked at pictures of the nose undercarriage wheel and it should look like it is. The problem is that there are extensive plastics that needs to be remove. So I need to get tools that I can do that with. =)
Thanks! I just ignore them and build the model as per the instructions. You could sand them off and then cut new lines, but you would have to check to see if recessed panel lines are more prototypical, I know some aircraft actually do have raised ones
Just getting back into modelling after 25 years and wanted to do the Typhoon.I have found your videos excellent in helping me get back into it. I agree the price is a bit steep considering the age and simplicity of the kit.Ive just ordered the Revell Luftwaffe " Richtofen" starter kit from Amazon for 14 quid.
Finally the Typhoon video is here 😃. And looks awesome!! By the way I've bought the Revell P51D Mustang that you build a time ago. Congratulations for achieve the 2000 subscribers.
Did I not mention the history in the video? Very first prototype of this aircraft was around in the mid 80’s, so its not too hard for model manufacturers to get a basic model ready. Like I say in the video, this is quite a basic model. Model manufacturers have a history of releasing model kits before the real life machine is available, something I’m pretty sure Airfix did with the harrier too! Sometimes they get it wrong, and their designs are way off, but other times they are pretty close. In fact, if you go on scalemates, the very first issue of this kit was as that prototype. I guess Airfix thought it was close enough to be continually sold as a normal Typhoon after that
Interesting Matt. I just spotted the canards on the Typhoon which looks like a design cue for the Rafale. Perhaps the French were still involved when that was done and took the idea with them.
The French were involved at very earliest stage. They ended their involvement when the other participants decided on a jointly-led project, rather than the ... erm ... correct position that France should dominate everything, and everyone should just fall into step.
I think the canards are an example of convergent evolution. Rafale, and Typhoon (and SAAB Gripen and Rockwell-MBB X-31, incidentally) are meant to be non-stealthy, highly agile fighters. They were both designs of the eighties. They're also both European. It's no great surprise that they would come to very similar solutions.
Hi Model Minutes! I just recently picked up this kit for really cheap at my local grocary store, and I found your vide really helpful with getting started on this model kit! But because this is only my second model kit, and I lost the first one like the 13 year old git that I was, I only have the given colours and resources from the set. I do have water colours, other paints, and markers as I am an avid artist, and I wanted to know of there are things I can do to obtain some of the effects you obtained in your build of this with your own resources, by using and mixing other resources that might be more readily available. Eg., can I get a a skin colour by scraping off pigments from water colours into 3 drops of the 130 satin white? Or dilute/make my own black wash? Any tip, fif, or trick that you can give would be greatly appriciated, and even if you can't, thank your for your time to read this comment and for making this awesome video! Kind regards!
Yes, i'm sure that you could use your artists's paints to achieve some good results. I use to make a wash from black acrylic matt black paint, diluting it with water and a drop of washing up liquid to help it flow. Provided the paints you are using will stick to the plastic, I shouldn't see any problems. Try them out on the plastic sprue as tests first to make sure :)
£9.99 at the Range(Southampton) if you don't mind one with a battered box, a few other starter set also available i.e Harrier GR9, Tornado F3 and A4 Skyhawk (£6:99p).
Humbrol 130 (and 34 for that matter) is pretty horrendous. White paint is really hard to do right as it is without humbrol giving us really bad paint. I hate to say it, but from my experiences there isn't a good way to use the included white paint in the kit. It would be better to get a white spray can (i hear tamiya is quite good)
Yes, if you shop around you can usually get things cheaper, but if you look on the Airfix website the RRP is £18.99 www.airfix.com/uk-en/eurofighter-typhoon-starter-set-1-72.html
the tail is heavier on the model than the nose, so when the model is built - if there is no extra weight towards the nose - it will sit back on the tail and the front wheels will not be on the ground
I think the more important problem with the age of the kit is that it misses the entire development of the Eurofighter Typhoon. Indeed, in 1992 there was no Typhoon. You had the Eurofighter EFA. First flight was scheduled for 1992, which I assume was the target Airfix wanted to hit. They succeeded, the EFA partners didn't. First flight didn't happen until 1994. I intend to do a Typhoon. For the reasons above, I've ruled out Airfix. Hobby Boss seems OK, though they provide no weapons (why would you want frivolities like that on a military aircraft). My preferred manufacturers would be Hasegawa and Revell. Italeri behind Hobby Boss. One caveat, this is based entirely on research, mostly on Scalemates. No practical experience involved.
yes, this model was based off the prototype and Airfix haven't re-tooled since then. I believe the Revell 1/144 scale version is more modern though (and possibly their 1/48?)
Love how these starter sets include the brushes, paints, and cements you need
