This is Cyprus, an absolutely gorgeous nation in the Mediterranian filled with beautiful little towns a laid-back way of life and an economy that is supposedly for sale.
That’s right, a fair few of you watching may have seen headlines that apparently Amazon is going to purchase the island nation and set up its global headquarters there to have its very own little tax haven.
This story was originally published by Saxo Bank which is a small European investment bank with a lot of operations in the area.
Now spoiler alert, it’s not going to happen, but it’s not as crazy as it sounds and one day it genuinely could make sense as a sound business plan. So stick around, partially because I need that average watch time so that the youtube algorithm may bless this video, but mostly because this bizarre prediction can tell us a lot about possibly the weirdest economy in the world.
There is a very good reason that Cyprus was singled out as the most likely country to be purchased in the 2020 national yearbook and that is because of its long history of hmmm let’s say being very agreeable to the whim of institutions with a healthy bankroll.
But of course, the nation is fascinating for so many more reasons not least of which is that half of the country is technically subject to an illegal occupation of the territory of the EU.
And it gets even weirder than that, if you were to look at the island of Cyprus you would be forgiven for thinking it is just one little ol country, but depending on who you ask it has as many as 4 different entities claiming sovereignty over what is a very beautiful but otherwise very barren piece of land.
So there is a lot going on here and as always the best way to make sense of a lot of this is to look at the economics of the island to work out what is truly motivating all of these powerful institutions that apparently want to own Cyprus.
    So
What is really driving the economy of Cyprus?
Why are so many people laying claim to it?
How have these tensions come back to bit them in recent years?
Why would it make the ideal country for some global megacorporation like amazon to buy?
And of course, once we have made sense of all of that, we can go ahead and put Cyprus on the economics explained national leaderboard.

I would like to add a correction in the reason Turkey invaded Cyprus and how they planned to legitimize said invasion. At that time in Greece there was a military coup which wanted to also stage a coup in Cyprus. At some point in time both Greece and Turkey have signed an agreement where they guarantee the sovereignty of Cyprus. The Greek Junta violated said agreement with the attempt of staging the coup. With this spark Turkey now had a reason to send military troops to "ensure" the sovereignty of Cyprus. In other words if the Greek Junta hadn't attempted the coup , Turkey wouldn't have a legitimate reason to land troops in Cyprus.

Close to zero. That's the difference between Cyprus and other first world countries. The invisible earnings you are talking about are black money which don't provide economical growth of the country but maybe of the people but if you think that a EU country like Cyprus, where the minimum wage doesn't even exist, where labor doesn't have a price and where you can still work like a waiter and get paid between 600-800 Euros in comparison with cost of living which is higher than many other countries means that we are a better country than anybody else, you my friend are sleeping.

Gremany has high tech industries that you seem to like so therefore do you recognize that heavy industry and many like it have also given the german acid rain?, their environment no longer has iconic sites like the black forest any more and no longer the ckean air they once used to have.
Lets stay on the subject of germany a little more koumbare and look at facts.
Did cyprus receive aid from the marshal plan? Germany did.
Did germany get partitioned 47 year ago losing 70% of its resources with 40% of it population turning into refugees?, cyprus did.
Did germany pay back debts she owes other countries, like poland and greece? NO !
theres more i can say about the krauts but hopefully you get the picture.
Lets compare other first world countries if you like. How are human rights and safety in the usa compared to cyprus? In the usa is education and health free? like in tiny little cyprus?
Does rich japan impress you? You realise they work many hours free of charge? Are you prepared to work more than 10 hours a week for free? Lets not soeak of their glow in the dark environment or large suicide rates.

It's a bit more complicated and a lot of my Greek Cypriot compatriots would disagree but Turkey effectively prevented the island of Cyprus being part of Greece , prevented a blood bath between the two communities, tried to restore the 1960 constitution and restored democracy on the island. That said I don't think our Island is up for sale.

The “passport for sale” more appropriately known as citizenship by investment program has been cancelled. While the EU, certainly didn’t like it, that wasn’t why it was cancelled. Too many criminals made it through the system because the Cyprus government didn’t do the proper due diligence screening the applicants. I expect them to reform their processes and reopen the program. For small nations like Cyprus, the revenue gained from citizenship by investment programs contribute a significant portion to the GDP. Some of the Caribbean nations that have them receive as much as 40% of their GDP from citizenship by investment. When Grenada was hit by 2 hurricanes/tsunamis back to back, it completely destroyed the entire island. The revenue from their citizenship by investment program is the only thing that allowed them to rebuild their nation.

Completely ignoring a terrorist organization called EOKA-B staged a coup on Cyprus and started to target Turkish Cypriots which triggered Turkish intervention in 1974 and Turkey had every right to intervene due it is a guarantor state of Cyprus!! Completely ignoring UN tried to reunite Cyprus since then, in fact in 2004 there was a UN plan called Annan plan but in the referendum Greek side refused the plan by 75% while calling a UN plan ''unfair'', on the other hand Turkish side accepted the plan by 65% and Cyprus was reunited today if Greek side also accepted!! Claiming Cyprus found ''trillions of worth gas'' while in reality Cyprus only found 300 BCM which worth around 40 billion dollars and Cyprus will only earn 10 billion dollars from it according to contracts they made!! Sadly this video has such an extreme bias and many wrong information you should question every information given by this channel with a grain of salt...

      @FinnUnv 3 роки тому

@@ggoddkkiller1342 Well in fairness, the guy is an economist, he does economy videos, the history was tacked on more as a factor in that economy and the details don't change anything in regards to that, so it doesn't have to be too accurate. I don't watch these videos for history lessons, but because I like the Australien accent and the economic insight I get.

@@FinnUnv I didn't mean don't watch him mate, in fact i also liked the accent and the jokes but i just wish it wasn't this biased and there were also economic mistakes like ''trillions of worth gas'' that i have absolutely no idea what was it's source. I could consider them as mistakes or poor research but some parts were very accurate indeed like passport scandal. So it sounded to me like deliberate ''mistakes'' to make people post more comments therefore youtube algorithm would recommend the video to more people!! I remember 90s when it was claimed with internet people were going to access information easier but sadly the opposite happened thanks to insane amount of false information circulating around!! I don't really blame the youtuber neither as they are trying to earn more money. But at least he could mention Annan plan etc to make it a little bit fair which will never happen unless we protest so i wrote that comment.

As a young Turkish Cypriot I felt compelled to write a comment to this toxic video for the sake of my grandfather (his grave yet to be found) who was dealing with livestock and agriculture to look after his family. He was killed in the middle of village hall by Greek guerillas leaving 5 orphan kids behind (including my mum who was aged 5.)
It's a shame to see that you have released a video with the lack of research of Cyprus history. You are claiming that Turkey invaded Cyprus for their own profit and made audacity to world. I completely disagree with you and can't sense the goodwill inside you.
Turkey organized operations to save Turkish Cypriots from Greek Terror Organization called EOKA. This Organization was led by General Georgios Grivas and their purpose was to unite Cyprus with Greece and they started war between Turks and Greeks which took between 1963-1974.
Turkey has decided to end this 11 years of misery (tried to negotiate and compromise with U.K.) between Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots. Maratha, Santalaris and Aloda (3 neighbour villages) massacre, which happened during Turkish invasion of Cyprus at 1974 (proclaimed by International Community). EOKA terrorists raped the women in these villages. Furthermore, to leave no witnesses, they chopped all the villagers off and put them into mass grave.(youngest was a 4 month old baby). In 1974 many people had to leave their homelands to start a newlife.
Current Cyprus flag has two olive branch in the flag which represents peace. The flag is designed by a Turkish Cypriot artist called Ismet Güney (may his soul rest in peace.) with this flag I am pretty sure his intention was to ensure a peaceful republic between Turks and Greeks.
I feel grief to see a person like you trying to make profit on UA-cam by making this "sided" and "bad ettiquette" video giving wrong information to people in the world.
P.S. I personally respect and do not have any anger against Greece and Greek Cypriots. Both sides had casualties in the past. For nearly half century authorities have been trying to find a solution which benefits each side. We have many similarities such as our habits and culture. Unfortunately what differentiates us is our belief, language and religion. I wish you all a good day and thank you for reading the REAL STORY, which is the tip of the iceberg of Cyprus History.

    • @andreksjour
      @andreksjour 2 роки тому

      1) EOKA was against the british and played a role for the independence. You are referring to EOKA-B that was formed in 1971, not 1963. And they wanted this Greek island (cope with this truth), to be united with Greece. This didn't come out of nowhere. The island is Greek! Learn the history of the island you live on.
      2) Atrocities during the invasion were made ALSO by the Turkish military, including raping of women and TORTURING of POWs. Cypriot church allowed abortion for a brief period because of the rapes. But it seems you forgot to mention Turkish atrocities in your "REAL" story. Turkish troops were not "angels" that came to save the day. And your turkish cypriot communities, were not harmless sheep either, were they?
      3) Turkey took the opportunity to grab land. The conflict between the people was just an excuse to invade, and create a "fake" nation, that they always wanted to do. This is why nobody recognizes that fake state. To this day, Turkey ILLEGALLY occupies the 36%, and the north state is NOT legitimate according to the INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY.
      4) You are the one that is toxic for being delusional and not coping with reality. Your "REAL" story, is a toxic mess, and FAR from real.
