This is night city, the futuristic metropolis which is home to most of the action taking place in cyberpunk 2077, which has quickly become the most popular PC benchmarking software in 2020.
There are a few reasons I wanted to explore the economy of this fictional world, for starters I gotta cash in on a subject that’s at the top of Google Trends, It’s been a while since I have done a virtual economy, I need a way to class my new gaming PC as a business expense and of course it actually genuinely very interesting.
Part of the appeal of this game was the way it wove an alternative reality in with themes and events that are taking place in our modern world to build an economy that both feels abstract but also entirely possible.
That virtual economy then builds the framework of an immersive world that is equally realistic and fanciful.
The world of cyberpunk 2077 is a cautionary dystopian tale that takes modern economic issues, like wealth inequality, corporate influence, white-collar corruption, militarisation, black market dealings and environmental degradation, and then turns those headlines up to to a whole new level to let people experience making their way through a world where these problems go unchecked.
It also goes without saying that this game has made headlines for a host of technical issues that have perhaps continued the theme of shining a light on economic problems in the real world.
So the economics of cyberpunk 2077 is a great case study for lots of weird and wonderful economic happenings.
How did the economy of this virtual world get to where it is in the year 2077.
What are the key components of Night City’s economy?
And a bit of a tangent
What business decisions led to the chaos surrounding the game’s launch.
Oh and cyberpunk 2077 technically takes part in an independent city-state so you know what the hey, may as well throw it on the economics explained national leaderboard.
Oh but first A little disclaimer, this video will not have any spoilers relevant to the plot, so don’t worry for all of you that haven’t been able to play the game yet (which is basically everybody).

Cyberpunk is honestly more horrific than real life. The worst that could happen to you online is Identity theft or having your data gathered; in Cyberpunk 2077, hackers can straight up kill people using the internet.
Well, yes and no.
1) you could use the web safely in the cyberpunk world. You'd just be significantly weaker, hence why hackers and such don't do it. A bit like you are really unlikely to die in a car if you never go above 30 km/h.
2) Hackers can totaly kill people in the real world, both directly and indirectly. There have e.g been showcases where white hat hackers got acees to certain cars systems via a hack, and then shut it off. Imagine that happening when going full speed on a highway in a curve or high trafic. Theres also indirect thing like hacker attacks on power grids. Combined that with extreme heat/cold, and some people will die from that.

A part that was missing when you explained the collapse was the role the EU played. They supplied the nuke that went off and where very hostile to the USA so little to no aid or loans could be expected. And because it takes place in the 90s China was not at the point where they would be able to supply capital to help a recovering US. So essentially the US collapsed in on itself because there was no one around to help it because they had isolated everyone with the wars in South America. Also the Gang of Four after nuke started manipulating the stock market to make it seem everything was fine when the fraud was discovered the US financial system collapsed. So simply there so no aid. Just a bit of extra detail to help explain it. Great video!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! xD
mostly agree with this assessment except for the growth. in 2023, night city had a literal nuke go off in its city centre.
recovering from that would take a great deal, and i guess the only real world comparison would be the economic recovery and rebuilding of Hiroshima or Nagasaki by the year 1999.
i but of course in order to work those numbers out accurately you would have needed to scour the Cyberpunk 2020 sourcebooks and effectively build 2 city profiles, so i don’t blame ya
Edit: Ah wait, an in game loading screen lore tip mentions on how the Night City lost nearly a third of its population in 2076. That definitely is not growth lol. may have rebuilt, but has certainly stagnated
hmm that's fair, although with 54 years I still think it could have made up more ground than that.
There is also the whole breakdown of the net and international trade. Which happens partly or fully multiple times in Cyberpunk history. It really is almost a post-apoc setting.
@@EconomicsExplained I have mixed feelings on this one but I partially disagree. Wiki puts Hiroshima's GDP in 2010 at $61.3bn. This is after about roughly 65 years of economic recovery, most of which would be unusable due to radiation and any other after-effects.
Night City, on the other hand, is a relatively young city that would have had to be built from scratch. This would include moving a population there which as we know from modern city projects can be difficult.
Take Brasilia or Canberra, one with ridden inequality and the other unable to outgrow the former capital. Add the nuke and the radiation it would have to suffer along with whatever rioting it may cause and businesses caring more about profits than the well-being of their city-state. (Egypt's new capital might be a very good point of comparison for building a city out the middle of the desert in the future.)
I do not think their futuristic industry would make up for it unless they had star trek level replicators or something nullify radiation (if the bomb was a nuke). Not to mention Night city's hidden GDP may make up a very large part of its wealth.
@@CamoHunt8 The radiation would probably pose much less of a threat to Night City, assuming it was a low-yeild nuke. Within 48 Hours the radiation would have dropped to about 1%, and within a couple years the radiation should be negligible. Also given their medical advancements, curing cancer and other illnesses as a result of radiation poisoning should be within their abilities. Now the societal effects of the bombing would definitely cause much more long term damage.
Night City took a huge hit in 2075-77 because Arasaka had come back and basically moved to stomp all remotely serious competition out of Watson, one of the largest parts of the city. That also caused the whole neighbourhood to collapse economically as collateral damage, leaving Arasaka free to buy out half the cities harbour area and put it to their own exclusive use.

Welp this is prolly my favourite video on eddies. Keep 'em coming choomba, you're a true info bro. Even a gonk like me can appreciate.
Hahaha thanks mate, glad you enjoyed.
The growth score should be higher imo, since the US experienced an unimaginable recession in the 1990s + 2023 sees the Arasaka tower nuclear explosion. I'd say rebuilding the economy from nothing to getting toe to toe with real life powers GDP withing 50 years is a good performance
Having 200 billions gdp is nowhere near “getting toe to toe” with real life powers
“Hong Kong is grounded by reality”
Do you mean grounded by the CCP ;P
One of the most perplexing things is how short the main campaign is and how shallow the overall world is relative to the 8 year timeline. It seems like there were A LOT of inefficiencies and reworking done during the development process, such as changing the entire storyline to allow for Silverhand to be the epicenter of the main story (which seems to have happened since he was brought on in 2018).

Yesterday I was asking myself: whether EE is going to make an video about the Economy of Cyberpunk 2077, today here it is. Impressive!
Such an accurate description of Coronado city as compared to how it is in real life on Coronado island in California today - it used to have a toll to get there, making it only achievable (along with high property prices and cost of living) for rich people to live and work there, or at least it started the transition for the neighborhood positioned right next to San Diego downtown to become an incredibly wealthy area. Today, it feels like a weird wealthy bubble where just rich people live, as if theyve sheltered themselves from the nearby problems of Chula Vista, the rest of San Diego, and even Mexico.
Its shocking how much Cyberpunk 2020 got right. Including 2020 being a bad time.
The fun part is that these events mostly occurred in lore BEFORE 2020. 2020 is actually supposed to be the "decent" year where gameplay takes place and the world isn't all ruined. In the newest edition Cyberpunk Red, come 2021 the 4th Corporate War Occurs and destroys the Internet, the total world economy, multiple major and minor governments and international institutions, and Night City when it gets Nuked. Cyberpunk Red takes place 2030s-2040s during the Time of the Red and the entire world is still rebuilding and will be until almost 2077

The tabletop setting was conceived when the internet was just a rumor, so there's a number things they didn't predict, such as the stock exchanges' Doomsday-proofing. This was when it was easier to imagine the US collapsing rather than the USSR, though the circumstances of Soviet transition to a market economy was remarkably similar to Russia's economic crises.
Hey Economics Explained, as a friendly FYI Eurodollars are not euros. The Euro in Eurodollar simple means a currency that is in the international finance system. Therefore, you can have EuroEuro's. Further, Euro currencies are backed by the underlying currency. So in this case, Eurodollars are backed by US dollars. The Eurodollar might be a good topic for you to research and do a video on as it is the most interesting & highly secretive topic in all of finance & economics.
Eurodollars are interesting because the reserve requirement for Euro currencies is not regulated. So, what does that mean? While domestic banks need to have ~5-10% of US dollars in reserve for every dollar they lend out, international banks do not have such a requirement. International banks only need to hold reserves at the level at which other banks trust them. This trust is called counterparty risk. If this trust becomes too low (i.e. counterparty risk becomes too high), then the entire financial system grinds to a halt (i.e. 2008).
Eurodollars are secretive because the international banking system is invite-only, including the clientele who can hold their money at such banks. Such a system is the closest thing to the Illuminati that nobody is talking about. If Night City is run on Eurodollars, then that could mean the international banking system took control of the US banking system, which we can argue this takeover has already happened (Covid was a very convenient excuse to supply a dollar shortage within the international banking system).
...you should make a Eurodollar video.
