I remember that day so much as it happened yesterday. As Sri Lankans it was the worst natural disaster for us and the term tsunami was unheard of for most here until then. I'm happy that people across nations who faced this tragedy are now moving on as they can. We will never forget the people taken from us on that faithful day. May they all rest in peace.
When the tsunami struck Aceh, I was just a K-2 pupil in Medan, North Sumatra. For some reason, I have no memory whatsoever of the disaster during that time. My dad was involved in some of the reconstruction efforts with the aid of JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) as a structural engineer.
Aceh should construct evacuation bridges throughout the town to provide safer places in case of future tsunamis. The terrain is mostly flat, making it hard to find high ground.
It’s hard to believe it’s been 20yrs. All these poor people who were lost in this nightmare. I too was on Holiday Vacation in Mexico with my parents when we saw it on the news. We were simply crushed by this tragedy. This is something no one recovers from, only learns to live with.

We have marked Tsunami Evacuation routes in coastal communities where I live because of this disaster. Hotels and resorts give pamphlets to visitors with info on what to do. I’m on the other side of the planet. Eyes were opened that day.
In fact, subduction in aceh and andaman island segment is unique Unlike other part of sumatra, is a cycle, around 3000-900 year cycle Before 2004 was 1600,then 1200 ,900 The Proof was a cave in souther aceh shores that Facing the sea directly So that sediment is formed at the mouth at the bottom of the cave
And it happened more than 7000 years ago when the 1st Indian Ocean tsunami had happened. And I wonder what would the future generations on those countries would ever remember on this tragedy if it'll happen again in more than 7 millennia from today. 😱
*International laws* are very clear on the South China Sea: - parts of it belong to some ASEAN countries, including Indonesia 🇮🇩, - the rest of it is the international water, - no part of it belongs to China🇨🇳 or Taiwan🇹🇼.
It appears that people in the area are still at risk of future tsunamis. Since 2004, not much has changed. New houses have been built along the shorelines, and they likely won't be able to withstand powerful waves. There are no tall buildings visible, which makes me doubt where safe evacuation sites would be and how quickly residents could manage to reach them in an emergency.
The safe set back for hundreds of kilometres stretch of shores are not practical. What's important is accurate early warning systems and quick mobilization of evacuation personnel and resources.
@@AinzWoolGownthe point is whenever earthquake happen.. it's critical moment... all the shake, shock, vibration, if it's doesn't effect the building, road, ground that will help mitigation.. but if it affected all facilities and infrastructure that will make a big problem... secondary earthquake tend to make panic. After the devastating tsunami in 2004, the world poured more than $1 billion in to help Indonesia 🇮🇩. Among that: - The US 🇺🇸 sent $400 million in assistance, and - China 🇨🇳 sent $20 million to its Asian friends. LOL
Completely incorrect! The US forked out about 900 M USD … less than Australia who forked out about 1.1 B USD … China paid about 90 M USD. Thats still not bad, pretty good taking into account powerful nations going forfar less and plenty of countries giving less than 1 M! Stop smearing propaganda and fake info into the comments!
Before thee We sent (Messengers) to many nations, and We afflicted the nations with suffering and adversity that they might learn humility. It was the worst natural disaster ever happened to my country. May all the souls rest in peace. Prayers from sri lanka. ❤
I’m glad we are remembering this horrific event. My son was born 4 days after the tsunami. It’s like something I revisit every year in my mind ❤❤😢😢

Why are there bot accounts here politicising the death of 300,000 people in a seismic tragedy?
they are everywhere
The operators get paid to do so.
Nonsense comment! Boy accounts … there are enough trolls ranting about and against everything!
Probably to increase engagement.

The high population density around the earthquake epicenter made it into a mega disaster
Half the deaths were in Banda aceh which only has 11,000 per sq mile... Which isn't really that high..... New York City is 27,000 per sq mile.

Excellent report. Remembering all those lost and those who were left. Horrific way to die. Natural disasters showing the best and worst of people.
I was in Aceh one month after the tsunami as humanitarian volunteer for 4 months.
Was hoping for more stories and depth to the documentary

doubt tall buildings would do any help, most shelters for natural disasters was underground.
Because tall structure that can withstand earthquake and tsunami is very expensive.

England is the biggest donor for the Aceh tsunami
$ 500 million.
Survey on google....
Why are they calling it the boxing day tsunami? Nobody observe this holiday where the tsunami hit. Pls stop.
Are u dumb?
Honestly, What difference does it make?
Maha dasyat tsunami abad 21.
It seems like the christians in Banda acheh are the ones who recovered fast
