@Doctor Mix, Deffonatly the Organ Used on "What Is Love" Is From the Roland Sound Canvas! I cant remember exactly what organ it was, BUT it was I beleive a GM sound, If that helps mate, Im 99.5% sure the preset in question is "Organ 3" In the sound canvas, It deffonatly has the character of what was used in the original buddy, hope that helps!
In 2020, the SynthMania channel sent an email to Tony Hendrik, asking where the organ came from, he replied that it came from a sample CD, but he no longer remembered the name. Now at the end of 2024, the ElectronicSupersonic channel found this sample CD, it is the Zero G Funky Elements, and there is the original sample of the organ. and also a while ago I asked Doctor Mix to reconstruct this song, so thank you very much :)
There's a number of samples from that first Zero G sample disk, including the lady's vocals. I bought it years ago and there's so much that people used on there.
I was the "soundguy" or "dj" or whatever for Haddaway some 8-10 years ago for a show he did. Great guy and people will never get tired of this track :D
That is very cool. But I think I did get pretty tired of hearing it after about the 47 thousandth time I heard it on the radio, in pubs, student union bars, nightclubs, shops, sports stadiums and even elevators in '93. It was a bit over-exposed!
Great track still not an iconic track like Giorgio Moroder's Donner Summer's ," I Feel Love ", Eurythmics "Sweet Dreams", Harold Faltermeyer's " Axel F " ,Kraftwerk's , " The Robot ", The Model " , "Piano Fantasia "by Mike Serbee but a French/Italian collaboration .
The ad revenue probably falls by the wayside compared to the sponsorship. Despite some hiccoughs (the NFTs come to mind), Dr Mix is a good businessman. And a great musician, but being great at something doesn't automatically pay the bills.
Yep, you pretty much nailed that. Musically it's so simple but great pop is always simple and the original parts are perfect in every way. The 90's produced some great dance music.
I don't know the first thing about music but I enjoy watching you methodically break down all of the sounds. It's like watching someone perform magic to someone like myself.
the organ is "rock organ 2" patch from the roland jx-1 (also used in "felix, don't you want my love" the characteristic you are using for is that slightly distorted high frequency registers with a fast leslie
Actually it's not the rock organ from jx1, it's a preset available even in the GM set of most Roland romplers from early 90s (rock organ 3). The jx1 rock organ is very similar but rough, I bet it's based on the same waveform. (I own a jx1)
The fact that you show a lot of the process is so valuable. I prefer this type of recreation, this was a beautiful insight and learned so much. Grazie mille
What really got this song on everyone's mind was the Saturday Night Live sketch and then movie Night at The Roxbury. The clubs then went wild with it, it was one of those must play songs.
You can tell a lot of time and effort was put into that song, apart from the song structure, choosing the right sounds, mixing and mastering. It's really a specific 90's sound that you just don't hear nowadays even with all the plugin emulations.
The Hammond "ghost note" needs its percussion to trigger. Shorten the notes of preceding chord so there is no overlap... then the percussion will trigger! ... would put the icing on the cake!
What I like about the organ sound and layers is that some of it reminds me of a lightly overdriven guitar - single coils or a jangly sound. The gated response gives me the sampled feel of the immediate cutoff. I’ll need to experiment with sampling my guitar.
SolBass (the Yamaha FB01 LatelyBass equivalent) was my stock bass sound back in the day. Hearing the multiple playbacks on this video is giving me goosebumps, and flashbacks to the old days of Atari ST and early multitimbral stuff.
Ciao! Guys, another great video. Great way to demonstrate a product and see you working together. Also, finding the notes. I had a struggle myself with finding notes of a sung melody...which was out of tune...that is pretty hard , I can tell...and as a result, having the melody in your head all day and night .
Really enjoyed this video and found it purely by the accident of youtube recommendations from other things i have been watching and i am not disappointed! You guys are a hoot and that was really entertaining and educational! I do have a classic cult from 1984 if you fancy a UK Synth-Pop to work out.. "Bronski-Beat - Smalltown Boy"
Ahh the O1W - my gigging synth for many years in the early 90s. Doesn't get as much kudos as it deserves, even though the stress of reloading floppy disks between tracks has never left me...!
I'm always at awe of your INCREDIBLE musicianship and listening, Claudio! Bravo!! And of course, great learning from your videos, as usual. Thank you for what you guys do!
Awesome! Reconstruction is wordy but so much more accurate than cover or copy. I love doing this too doing collaborations with other musicians. It’s like a sonic puzzle that really gives you an appreciation of the production and arrangement work that went into the song.
In 1992/1993, there has been 3 Songs, I listened every day to between 5 to 10 times: This one, Dr.Alban with it's my life and Ace Of Base All that she wants 😍. Btw.: The trick at 8:28 is one of that kind, most people hadn't recognized until now 😉 Greetings from germany
I hopped on and thought, “I wonder what Doctor Mix has been up to?” Clicked to the channel and saw this was uploaded an hour ago. Immediate click. I was introduced to this song during the springtime of my youth as it was connected to the trailer of the film, “Monkey Trouble”. It blew up on the radio around that time here. Loved it from day one.
Great job, I've always been a fan of Eurodance. By the way, the female vocals from What is Love actually come straight from a sample CD (Zero-G - Datafile One). I think they were just too lazy to find a singer... ;)
Great job Claudio! I was really surprised by the amount of work that went into the layers of this song. I always thought it was simpler, but now I understand why it worked so well at the time. There was a lot of work behind it. You have quite an ear, my friend. Greetings!
A huge classic from a magic period of my life. I'd love to see an episode about "The Human League - Heart Like A Wheel". Tons and tons of synths put together beautifully. You guys rock! Cheers!
I always hated this organ sound and could never get into it. That's true about the Roland U20, but you can also find it in the Korg M1. The characteristic thing about it is that the Lesli effect was sampled as well.
An awesome track that is one of the go to tracks when I'm in a 90's mood. As soon as you hear that bass sound there is an instant smile and you turn in to party mode :)

Also the vocal "woahs" were from zero g, they were samples, not even sung!
These suites are compliant with garageband and Logic?

this song was a big hit on Italian FM radio. They played in 92 more than anyone in Europe. (it is a French harmonica melody taken from Italo House)
those zero g cd's are great. i have like the first 3 basic ones in mp3 or wav format but didnt know there were more
@ you can't post links here. Search "90ssamplecds" in Google. It's there.

@@Ingens_Scherz Yeah exactly. And nobody can name any of his other songs. Marketing and pushing made him famous nothing else

It's an absolute joy seeing you two at work. Great two men team.
Never would I have believed this song would become such a 90s anthem when it came out. That bass is an instant nostalgia trip to the early-mid 90s.
it had more luck than the others. there are thousands of comparable or even better productions that didn't make it
@@hijack3 Incredible what being prominently featured in a goofy movie can do to a song.
I just love the 'demonetize me' part.

@Kouros-t6dlol, chill out, gramps.

Gotta do the sideways head bob when this comes on. 😁
Night At The Roxbury turns into Several Nights At The Hospital because you obliterated multiple cervical discs between C1 and C7.
its a preset off the that old roland u20 rompler the synth sound is a square wave with pwm modulated by an lfo. I remixed this song :)
The organ preset later made its way to the whole Soundcanvas and arranger keyboard range, so this should be one of the easiest to obtain sounds.
The organ from Zero G disc - Funky Elements, HAMMOND B3 patch

Agree, even in the sound canvas sc-55 the sound is there.
@@esiclene yeah I kind of remember now, they are slightly different. My sonic memory failed me.
Hedge777 has made an amazing reconstruction. Very well produced track, that's why it sounds so good after all these years.
Yes, check out hedge’s video
I'd love to see you guys do children by Robert Myles. Great video and very instructive to see how you work.
Check out Julian Croot...damn near perfect reconstruction.
Please, yes!!
Im follow you a few years and always I feel the passion you have about what you doing, its lovely to see
Doctor Mix, what have you done?? You put this song in my head for the whole day!😄😄

That's always been my eurodance reference point: if you can play it, you can play pretty much all eurodance (and hopefylly create some of your own).
