With a DX7 and a Korg M1, you can make 70% of the music I grew up on (without drums). Add in a JP8000, a Prophet 5, a TB-303 and a MiniMoog and you can make most of the rest.
I always found it amusing that for many albums they put the ‘no synths are on this album’ disclaimer but when they did start the synths are always quite prominent but always tastefully done.
I remember trying it out in the late 80s, in a local store. But it looked so increadably boring that I didn't want it. (Compared to the old Prophet 5 and such.)
M1, truly a solid board that could still keep up with sound quality! I remember trading up from Ensoniq SQ80 to an M1. Holy cow. LOL. Instead of sampling and chasing that pure and clean sound, it was all right there with so much more polyphony. Sounds at a click instead of loading up disks? My first REAL quality workstation. Who remembers the Roland U220? That was another eye opening toy! Those days were so much fun experiencing the revolution of affordable home studio gear that the pro's were using! A love of synths that continues 40 years later!
As a 18y old I went into the shop, powered on Korg M1 and it would play the Universe sound (last one in the video). I was hooked and immediately spent all my money.
I recognize the Seinfeld intro, the ones from Queen, and quite a few others... I didn't know those came from the M1! Right up there with the Roland D50 and Yamaha DX7 with popular synth riffs utilizing out-of-box patches!
It always cracks me up when people commenting that they’re amazed that there are presets in a hit song. Uh , you do know it’s precisely the reason these devices are made and have good sounds so that people use them lol
@@Eric_In_SF Has nothing to do with that. It's the fact that peoare amazed because a lot of artists make most of their own sounds up and a lot of people try to replicate them so when they hear something, they're amazed that it's actually not altered. I'm just a basic stock preset.
If you search for hte musicradar article "Which synth was used to create the Seinfeld slap bass sound" they point out that it's not the M1 or the 360 Systems MIDI Bass, but instead a set of processed samples. The video shows him playing it on a Kurzweil.
Yes, I did search and watched the video where he plays it on a Kurzweil. However, I’ve also read that he actually sampled the M1 sound, among others, to create that sound and played it on the Kurzweil.
