I know you probably won’t read this but I use to watch your videos a lot when I was young and starting out drawing. Now I’m growing as an animator in college! I’ve gotten into an art class recently and for my personal project I need to properly learn how to sketch glass. I just randomly clicked on your video and instantly recognized your voice after so many years. It’s amazing how you helped me then and even now without me even realizing it. Thanks so much mark!

I'm no physicist, but know some things about light.
When light passes through glass, it does get refracted slightly, as the material it passes through changes from air to glass. The parts where glass is thicker (sides of glass object, or places where two separate pieces of glass meet) don't let as much light through, so those will drop a shadow. Thinner parts will transmit slightly refracted light through the bottle, making the shadow look translucent. Hope this helps :)

I'm no Mark Crilley, not even close, but my suggestion would be try a photo reference. Try using a grid at first, try and look at the lines, or flip the picture upside down and draw it upside down. All of those three techniques are used to help you see the lines that are being used and can give you a greater understanding of the perspective. that would be my suggestion.

    Refracted is correct :P
Reflected (which is usually confused) is when light bounces directly off a surface, but refraction occurs when light passes through an object that is transparent and changes its angle/refracts

  • @Lord_Raviel

Refraction is the name for the bending of light when it passes through different mediums. It is what makes images through glass, especially glass that isn't smooth, look distorted.

you were right! refraction is the bending of light when it enters a material in which light travels at a different speed than it was traveling in the first medium (here the speed of light in glass is lower than the speed of light in air). The angle at which it refracts relates to this difference in velocity. Because the glass is non uniform in shape and thickness this would result in a really cool shadow. Google Snell's law if you are really interested :)
