what i love about your how to videos is that you actually EXPLAIN when a lot of videos out there that say how to, just do it in complete timelapse showing them drawing with no details about how or what they are doing. you're great!!
Mark, you consistently amaze me with your tutorials. I think the twenty minute breaks are a great way to demonstrate your polishing phase and give the viewer a sense of just how long and patently you have to proceed to get a picture to look truly great.
This is the first video I've seen of yours and I love it. I think the combination of real time and time lapse works very well. I am just starting out with pencils and have been doing more smudging but couldn't figure out how to do it cleanly, now I see you don't have to smudge. Thanks for the great instructions.
I am an artist who has given up more than once for years at a time. A few years ago I discovered your videos and found your voice relaxing. You don't over-explain, and you're very good at getting people to understand what you're doing and why it makes the art better. I appreciate it so much! Thanks for sharing all of this with you. BTW I bought Brody's Ghost a while back - super fun stuff. Nice art and nice of you to share! Thanks for getting me interested in art again!
For someone who does this type of illustration in real-time, yes there will be lapses in this video. But, for the people who are patient and willing to learn, they know how to appreciate this. Photo Realism I find is tedious but precise.
Just want to say a huge thanks markcriley. Had not picked up a pencil in a long time because my pencil work wasn't really progressing as i wanted it to,. I have learned a hell of a lot in this past few weeks with your amazing tutorials and now my work is getting to where I wanted to be years ago. Keep up the great work. You are a pleasure to watch.
This is a great video and definitely encouraging to young artists to know that even great drawers like yourself will invest hours functio the final result is acheived. Thanks for your time!
I dabble in pencil drawings and have so much trouble when it comes to eyes and mouths. I stumbled across your videos this evening and watched several of them and love the tips and insight you have to offer. I love your gift and I'm grateful you have chosen to share it, giving people like me more tools to work with to bring out on paper what's in our head.
Just recently (yesterday) found your videos. This one emphasizes the amount of time required. Also, patience. Even walking away for a while. Thanks. I really like the use of simple tools found around the house. Pencils, color pencil, straight edge. Those I have.
Just an amazing talent, Mark! Thanks for sharing it with us! I love the 20 min start/stops. I had no idea it took that long, but now I see why! Thanks again!
this was one of the better tutorials I've seen so far. I hate when people do the whole thing time lapse and never talk because it's nice to hear what your thinking and explain the techniques you've used. Very good job! That was a major reason I subscribed.
I've seen the other tutorial on how to draw the mouth, and it was pretty good. But this was even better, its like you're the art teacher I never had..:) Thanks!
Mark, I want to thank you for inspiring me to pick up the pencils again after 20 years. You make it fun again. Keep doing what you do, it is appropriated!!
Very useful. Thank you for taking the time to explain in detail the process. And the 20 minute increments really helps to convey the time it takes to put in to your art work. Great job.
This is really well done. Photorealistic lips are hard, and I think this is one of the best videos I have seen here..lol not that I can do this yet, but it's helpful.
Thank you so much Mark ! I draw for about more than 6 years now (Mangas,paint,portrait..) .And i always wanted to know more about how to draw, your videos help me everyday !
crazymusicgrl no es que no tengas paciencia; seguramente dibujas en un estado tenso, y la mano hay que dejarla volar, cosa que se consigue con la práctica del dibujo.
It doesn't matter how many time lapse videos you included. It was great the way you explained each one!!!!! Each one was very informative and useful. Thanks
Mark makes it sooooo easy to follow along. I drew a wolf and it came out amazingly! Best drawing tutorials. Even if you aren't the best at drawing, these can help sooo much!
Mark, sir you are awesome.. I just started drawing, and I found you. We are almost the exact same age. Lol so I'm getting getting a late start. But I've seen All of your videos . And drawings online every where.. I worked For a Japanese company for 12 years with many good Japanese friends.. I was supposed to go to Japan in 98 but it got canceled at the last 2 months I still want to go. But your vids about what you saw and even the art stuff. And your inspiration video about your Manga comic books, Man I am a HUGE fan in a very short period of time.. You are just a great guy. We do have so much in common., I have never been able to draw a circle without a quarter. Lol.. But, and I know I won't be really good notime soon if ever, lol but I am having sooooo much fun trying.. I have bought what I need and I just love trying.. I started out being so much better than I thought I could be and I attribute that to watching your videos.. You have already made me better. I seem to be OK at drawing hair. At least that's what I can do the best at thus far.. Especially at shading. And light.. Many many thanks to you sir.. Maybe I would of started sooner if I had known I could draw a circle without a quarter anyways.. Lol.. I just stuck to being a musician.. Well now I have the confidence, and have found the way to improving faster, fast enough to give myself some patience.. And if I lose that. We'll sir you have thought of everything. You have a good video for that.. Thanks Mark, and that's my brother's name too. Lol thanks man. Keep the books and the videos coming.
thanks so much for showing your talent. i have been watching it for 2 years now, because of your videos i have become the best drawer/ painter in my entire school school. I'm 15 btw.
I think the 20 minute time lapse thing was very smart, I like how you come back and explain what you did. It's very helpful and you're very good! Keep making these!!
Hey Mark! could you PLS do a video about: How to draw real face portrait. Like all the shading and blending of the face that makes it look realistic!! Pls if you can make a video about this!!!
That would be difficult considering portraits take a lot shading and time. Portraits requires more of shading technique and good observations for proportions. I don't think he can cover all the things in one video.
He has a video on drawing a realistic face which is divided into parts...first is the line placement and proportions and the second one is about shading!! Although the video title says How to Draw a Realistic Manga face but it does look pretty realistic. Its good for you to start atleast :)
Amazing~! Thank you for so much for the videos you post for us. Your 20 minutes time lapse method is a great idea for the viewers, and your comments are very helpful and informative. You are an amazing artist!!
Oh I just had an idea! You should make an entire face from that mouth, if possible. Just an idea. It would be interesting to create a photorealistic face out of just pieces of a face. Since most photo realistic material is from real life
can we all just take a minute to thank this man for his near perfect style of narrating this creation process, with each video i feel like i'm absorbing more of his magic powers
Was a subscriber back in the days, 4+- years ago. Even tried to draw a cat girl(was it your video ? :) ). Then unsubscribed, because you were more focused on manga and anime type of thing. Found your videos today again and i'm stunned. Subscribed again and already tried some of your lessons!
Ever since I've been watching great tutorials like this one my drawing has improved so much! I'm a huge fan of details and when I look at your tutorials and the photorealism of your drawings I instantly want to try myself and get better. I absolutely love this!! Thank you for teaching me how to draw in a more realistic way :)
This really really was helpful. I can't wait to get started. Also I love your voice and your humor. You have sucha wonderful personality, it was wonderful watching this video.
I loved this new way to do it, not that the others aren't good but it's what frustrates me a lot about most how to paint/draw videos on here! one minute there is a basic painting! the next! amazing but it's the bit in between that I need to see. Awesome, love your work and your tutorials
Beautiful! I have been taking tips from a bunch of different people to help me out with my realism, but you sir have been so clear and you take your time which is something I haven't been doing. Glad I subbed!
I love your work, Mark. I've been subscribed to you for years now. I absolutely love your in depth videos. Time lapses are good, if you want to see the end result (which some people prefer) but I have learned so much from watching you. Thank you for being so awesome and sharing your talent. :)
Hey mark I really enjoy all your tutorials and videos. I've started drawing again and trying to get back into creating my manga, also doing a bit of photorealism drawings, Wish you were my instructor for my class lol everybody would love you!
Just starting out in drawing and found this video. I love how you do the 20 minute increments and the explanations are excellent. I've subscribed and I'm looking forward to digging into some of your other videos. Thanks!
I am very passionate about painting and sketching. my work is like average. somehow today I felt like starting it which I had left almost 4 years back. I subscribed to your channel and hoping to learn the art more seriously. thank you sir :)
Excellent Educational Video! I'm Sharing on Google Plus.. Doing Photo Realistic Drawing Takes Time & attention to details. Especially Lights & Shadows..Textures...
Ah,the drawing looks magnificent! I wonder whose pretty lips inspired you so much Mr. Crilley :) I'm really glad that you let us know how much time it took you to draw it, because whenever I tried to draw along with you (and I have drawn at least 20 drawings following your vides) I always rushed to catch up after a time lapse part. I never knew how much time you put in these drawings. Now I'll try to go more patiently and the result will be better :) And I'll send you a link in dA :)
This is my first time watching a tutorial by you, you are really great!I love the 20 minute time lapse idea. However I'm a beginner so what I would have liked is if after every time lapse section you quickly go over what you did rather than do the time lapse and move on to the next step without an explanation. Apart from that I really enjoyed your tutorial so thank you.
These videos are extremely useful in building on my drawing skills. This video particularly helped a lot, considering that I'm not too good at drawing lips.
Love the narrated video. The 20 minute time lapses were fine. Really enjoying your instructions. I've used your instruction to draw the eye, ear, hands, mouth. I need a nose! LOL! I need to get a black pencil to get the really dark high contrast. I'm practicing.
Agreed. Need a nose to use. I have several portraits sitting around without noses LOL. I am afraid to try cause i've put in many, many hours in to each and every one. Need some instructional videos from you haha!
I really enjoyed this video, I appreciate how you broke it down step by step, thank you for taking the time to do this video!!! I'm a complete beginner at drawing as well as painting (watercolor), I want to dedicate myself so I can continue to improve. My drawing biggest challenges are: ears, hands and hair. Could you do a step by step on how to draw them from different angles? That would be awesome!!! :.) Thank you and keep up the fantastic work!
I've only watched your two lip/mouth videos so far and the 20 min. segments of this one was extremely helpful. You forced yourself to give equal coverage to all the steps/phases, this video gave me a greater feel for the actual timing of the process. Please don't take this the wrong way, as a bit of a rambler myself, I am particularly aware of techniques that keep it in check! This 2nd tutorial felt more focused. You paused briefly before each time lapse to give an overview of what was to come. It make me look carefully at what you were doing. Though this video was longer than the first, it felt more concise. Five minutes into this tut, I had to pick up my pencil and start emulating your gentle, progressive technique. I've had a shading epiphany tonight. Thank you so very much for sharing your talent.
you have inspired me.. Thank you. you're amazing! I stopped drawing for years, didn't know how to begin! .. with your guidance, I'm drawing again. I can't thank you enough
Very good work, a good instructor. you have included many issues That are not normally addresses in these types of videos. I have learned a lot thank you . keep doing what you are doing. it is appreciated.
i always had the ability to draw growing up. I used to draw on a daily basis all through elementary, middle school, and the first 2 years of high school. when i discovered the vagina, my drawing career ended. now, in my 30s, i want to rediscover drawing and dump the vaginas.
Hi! Thanks for the videos! I have always wanted to sketch, but, could never find a guide. With your well narrated videos, I can finally do something that I love to do! Thanks a ton! I tried sketching the eye and the lips. Could you please upload a video for sketching the nose, with narration! Thanks!
great video one of the best tutorials ive seen so far the 20 min increments were just abought right enough time to see what was happening without making the video to long
Thanks.. Some folks just Run through in quick time ; not explaining all of what they're doing. You really take your time. I think those others are just showing how good they draw; which is fine; but they shouldn't make vids saying they're teaching.. You're Great dude!!
me drawing:
*draws eye
me: Omg best eye I've ever done!
*draws other eye
me: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Méadhbha Nic Ainmhire me everytime
I can relate!! I would suggest sketching both eyes before going into shading, it will save you do much time and effort in a log run :)
That's what happens to me
Work on them both at a time
i drew three eyes and they are perfect
what i love about your how to videos is that you actually EXPLAIN when a lot of videos out there that say how to, just do it in complete timelapse showing them drawing with no details about how or what they are doing. you're great!!
Mark, you consistently amaze me with your tutorials. I think the twenty minute breaks are a great way to demonstrate your polishing phase and give the viewer a sense of just how long and patently you have to proceed to get a picture to look truly great.
It's just amazing how you take it to photo realism! Thank you for teaching me how to draw, really draw!

Same, I've been drawing since his early manga vids! Tank god for him :)
Just an amazing talent, Mark! Thanks for sharing it with us! I love the 20 min start/stops. I had no idea it took that long, but now I see why! Thanks again!

i always had the ability to draw growing up. I used to draw on a daily basis all through elementary, middle school, and the first 2 years of high school. when i discovered the vagina, my drawing career ended. now, in my 30s, i want to rediscover drawing and dump the vaginas.

+walter yanez I really thought you were going to say you were going to draw vaginas. Haha.
+walter yanez what a sad story !! at least you discovered something

Hi! Thanks for the videos! I have always wanted to sketch, but, could never find a guide. With your well narrated videos, I can finally do something that I love to do! Thanks a ton! I tried sketching the eye and the lips. Could you please upload a video for sketching the nose, with narration! Thanks!
I hate timelapse
Here's my "no time lapse" series-- Four videos, not a single second of time lapse: ua-cam.com/video/Oq3eS43BcPs/v-deo.html
thanks bro
do a how to draw real goddesses & gods
great video one of the best tutorials ive seen so far the 20 min increments were just abought right enough time to see what was happening without making the video to long
yeah so mine didn't turn out like that ...
i haven't seen anything realistic like those pictures! nothing is different in the reality. you are awsome man! enormous
This is beautiful & very helpful :) Thank you!
Mark I think this video was the best I have seen on drawing the mouth. Thanks
Great job Mark. Those look so real.
Thank you!
This is amazing! I really love your narrated videos. I just don't understand how you can stay focused for so long!
Wow that’s all I can apart from amazing I can’t believe you have achieved such an amazing finish. Thank you for sharing .
Thanks.. Some folks just Run through in quick time ; not explaining all of what they're doing. You really take your time. I think those others are just showing how good they draw; which is fine; but they shouldn't make vids saying they're teaching.. You're Great dude!!
Thanks Aquari!
If i could drawing like that i would be so happy RN those are the best lips i've even Seen.
Great video tutorial. I really like the 20 minute breakdown sessions.
