- This is the intro of the song Blackened by Metallica. The story is that they first recorded the normal part and somehow decided to use the REVERSED audio for the actual song. It's so beautiful and bittersweet and I decided to cover it. Enjoy.

Arguably the best intro of all time in a metal song. It’s plays just as good in reverse for crying out loud. AND, it sets the tone to an album where the world’s greatest metal band were at their peak, and they pushed their abilities as musicians to the limit. It’s my favorite album, and Blackened is just a pure work of art.

Agreed, but more like an anti-anthem. It’s so harrowing. One of the best intros ever imho. Reversing it was amazing. The non-reversed version is just bland and boring.
Whoever made the decision to reverse that opening needs to win a Nobel Prize in something. Rock? Bad Assery? Who knows. But there should be eternal recognition for that level of brilliance.

Some how in the late 90s the tape got flipped over on my cassette in my Walkman and the intro played like he originally played it. It was like discovering uranium when in played it for my friends

wow! they always said it was a reverse of an original recording they did... and now i hear it from you! amazing! now i am also wondering where they got the intro to the unforgiven... 'cause in the binge & purge cd, kirk said they "stole" it from some other band, but he won't say who...
I was able to discover this by accident in 1990 when my tape player went berserk where it played tape in reversed. I remembered reading in the guitar magazine that blackened intro was reversed, so went I got my justice tape and played it. It was an awesome moment then, there wasn't any tools available commercially let alone software to do so.

I haven’t found any direct confirmation, but I believe this intro was most likely played by James. For this album he didn’t only play the rhythms, he played all the harmonies and even the slower leads (which this qualifies as). Guitar-wise, he played pretty much everything except for the solos.
Yeah, that's right. On the sleeve cover of the AJFA album, it says that all the rhythm guitar and harmony parts were played by James, and Kirk only played the solos... I read an interview where Kirk said he only started playing rhythm on the Load album...

I felt a pang of disappointment when the song didn't kick in. But I have to say, it's freaking brilliant in both directions. The mood changes with direction, to my ear though.
You should upstroke the forward part so the reverse looks normal!
