- DIY chest rig for less than $20! I am constantly changing my kit and load out looking for the best, lightest and most convenient way to cover lots of ground easier. I've been fascinated by the line of chest rigs from Hill People Gear and wanted to see if I can come up with something as functional for a lot less money. I've made a lot of my gear and since the bag itself is cheap and available on Amazon for $12.99 all I needed to do was make the harness. Here are the links to the stuff:

Great minds think alike. I made the exact same thing a little over 4 years ago and used spare parts cut from old backpacks.
It wasn't only about saving some money, but also the experience and fun of building the project.

I basically took a canvas tool apron and turned it into a chest rig for urban EDC, since I ride a motorcycle I wanted to keep everything secure and protected inside my jacket, it looks more like the old Vietnam era military chest rig, like rows of items stacked on a super wide webbing belt on the front, I followed the old Russian model you still see on combatants today, mind you I had to resolve this years ago, before 2000, even before Amazon, the thing is still in use today, but I dyed it black almost immediately for discrete carry. 👍🏽✌🏽
I never thought about it’s use while riding but that’s a great idea! Way more accessible than a back pack👊

Thank you for your inspiration! Since watching your video for the first time I already made two DIY chest rigs.
The first using the small Wynex Admin Pouch, the second using their larger, two compartment Admin Pouch that also features a velcro'd-in clear vinyl map cover.
I simplified the straps for my purposes and use two 40-48"/100-120cm 1"/25mm lengths of nylon webbing, two C- or slotted D-rings, four 1"/25mm triglides, and one 1.6"/40mm triglide for the back, where the straps cross. To make the pouches more rigid, I cut panels out of model builder's polystyrol and inserted them in the pouch closest to the back.
BTW, the larger Wynex pouch is just large enough for a 6" Glock 17L. If one chose to carry in such a pouch, a Raven Concealment Vanguard Holster - that covers just the trigger guard - might be an option.

I did the same thing a few years ago but with the condor admin pouch which is identical to this one, only difference is I used the slip thru/ repair buckles that can be bought off Ebay, I mounted two up top and two on the sides, they all just slip thru the molle and no stitching necessary.
The ones at the sides I added a length of webbing to go round my chest to make a chest strap with an adjustable toggle.
The two connectors up top are attached onto small pieces of webbing that I have sewn or just threaded thru my pack shoulder straps.
I have these shoulder buckles on all my packs no which means I can transfer the chest rig between packs depending on which pack I am carrying.
This adds even more versatility to this chest rig!
I use the chest rig for the same thing as you do with the addition of a small radio pouch mounted on the front of the molle for my baofeng and another small flat phone pouch thats padded for my phone, GPS or compass.
This pouch is great for navigation and comms! which is its primary use in my set up.

Nicholas Dagnino I’ve seen these connectors and I like the way you used them. I did a hike with the bag attached to the main pack’s shoulder straps but found it to be a p.i.t.a. When I stop for food or rest I drop my pack but this is on me all day. Do you have any pics of your setup?

Very nice project. I love the idea and that it's a budget alternative. I'd try using a Speedy Stitcher or one of those tool like the one I purchased from Harbour Freight. Another option is to use "Chicago screws" or any short screws, washers (Rubber and/or metal) and nuts. Maybe secured with some Loctite or epoxy. There is a video on here where a guy used those little mending plates and screws to attach gear to MOLLE webbing. It was a very easy and inexpensive method.... particularly for those of us who may be afraid of a sewing machine :)

You can get the harness on the zon for $12. It has D clips that lock into the molle webbing and straps that attatch to the top D rings and a padded back panel

That's awesome. I'm a big guy and been searching and searching for a chest rig that will fit. And most of what I've found doesn't give measurements and so I'm know big ppl aren't supposed to need tactical stuff but now a days with all that's going on I would like to havea set up to grab with all of my magazines and shotgun ammo in one spot rather than grabbing mags and putting them in my pants pockets and then grabbing a bunch of shells and shoving them in my pants pocket and them turning around and still throwing on my AR and then grabbing my 12 gauge pump and going to address the problem. It'd be nice to just throw on a chest rig. Then my AR sling and grab my 12 gauge and roll out. Anyway even if I didn't make one just like yours I see now how I could make a chest rig fit by using some of your methods rather than oh well it don't fit so it just goes on the closet. Now I can make it fit.. Thank you for your video.

I got a no name generic one on Amazon for 25$ CAD. Took a month from China but very well made with back straps included

Wyadex pouch ripped inside so I sent it back to amazon and got the condor one just like it but its better made and worth the extra 12 bucks

On your video, at 3 mins, 4 secs, you mention that sound like a "boot pack"? I'm not sure if you said "boot pack" or "food pack", can you elaborate more on the contents of that?

Kinda wonder if the upper D-ring stitching and upper back panel in general will hold up to hauling a Glock 19 or similar over time?
The best part of buying the Hill People Gear bags - aside from not coming from china - is that they've already identified and fixed any weaknesses, failure points and stress areas.

3 years ago haha more expensive , ok here it is , order the cheap ones on wish 12-16$ then paint polyurethane (Water based ) that will make it durable as hell , then make sure to upgrade shoulder straps . Enjoy.

Johannes Nilsen I was actually thinking the same thing! Yesterday I was shooting video on a mtb ride and my backpack (bike tools, parts, food and water) and camera bag (cameras, gimbal, tripods and batteries) didn’t work well together. I’ll see what I can come up with. Thanks for watching👍🏻👊🏻
@@TrailBreaker a modular back pack could also be nice, like modify backpack for a digging day, a hike or a mtb ride without needing to switch backpacks or mess with taking gear in and out or leaving stuff.
I see there are backpacks for cameras, backpacks for trail builds, but why not all in one that has a centre peace you got water, tools and then attach the rest on top and to the sides, but of course making a working backpack that actually is nice to use is harder than come up with a idea. I hate losing stuff, or forgetting stuff.
@@TrailBreaker a pack like this just made bit differently for camera, would be nice, tripod attachment for small light weight tripod, and camera in the middle.
it would make getting ready for photo session fast, nice if you want to take photos without using smartphone but go for something better.
but I see there are compact cameras you can put in a pocket, I haven't tried those, but they don't have detachable lenses, but I would not mess with lenses outdoors anyway.
but a bag like this would mainly be best for bigger cameras, cus you don't have to mess with the backpack.
but I see bel mounts for lenses and cameras exist, but not so nice if walking in the forest I guess.
@@TrailBreaker if having tripod on ride it must be light, same with camera, my bag is about 3.5 KG with just water and tools. I would not ride with a big monster, So far I am fine with my phone, but I dislike the distortion, wave distortion as most smartphones have these days.

Just ordered the condor version of this pouch. Can you direct me to a buckle that doesn't require it to be sewn and keeps tight with tension? Will be stealing your side d ring idea but don't have a sewing machine available.

A lot of companies are getting into this area. One bag that looks pretty nice is the Emersongear Recon Kit Bag amzn.to/2ZVdpfZ. Another is by Krydex amzn.to/2X8XcqK. Both are slightly wider that the Wynex and already have the straps and back panel to be used as a chest rig. I haven't tried either one so if anyone has, let us all know. Thanks!

David A. Blake the hardest part is figuring out how to thread the machine😊 nothing harder than a straight stitch. As you can see, it doesn’t need to be pretty lol
No sewing is necessary if you use two lengths of nylon webbing that cross behind your back. I made mine that way.
2x 48" of 1" nylon webbing
2x 1" D-ring, cut or saw a slot in the straight part of the D to insert them into the pouch's Molle webbing
4x 1" triglide
1x 1.6" triglide to keep the straps together where they cross behind the back

It's my backup. I primarily use Permethrin for clothing and gear and Picardin.
... and rather than gas a bear with a spray, squirt it with Deet and perhaps it will take a year off his life 😉
