Another series of animated optical illusions. I created all of these from scratch using photoshop.
One of the simplest yet amazing illusions.
    The definition of illusion:
something that deceives by producing a false or misleading impression of reality

For those wanting to know how to do it, it's fairly simple.
First decide how many frames your animation will have (for a 4 frame animation, make the bars on the acetate 3 blocks thick, with a 1 block space between each)
Then create the images for your animation.
Use your acetate image as a mask on each frame of the animation (offsetting it by 1 block for each frame)

Nicely done. For the waves, you see the "beat" (difference) frequency. Frequency is 1/period. So the length of a cycle of the "animated" pattern is 1/ the difference of the two other pattern spacings (periods). The motion demonstrates that phase difference is preserved (coherent) in the process. This is how a part of most radio and TV receivers work. Example with easy to see numbers:
    Spacing #1 = 4/16 = 1/4 (Freq = 4) inverse = 4/1
    Spacing #2 = 5/16 (Freq = 3.2) inverse = 16/5
    Freq difference = 0.8
    Inverse of 0.8 = 1.25 = 20 /16ths
20 /16ths is longer than either of the two periods. The difference frequenci is smaller (lower) that the other two and therefore easier to amplify (in a radio).
Make the wiggly lines different periods and the waves will have different frequencies. This is called "mixing", or heterodyning in radio. Thank Maj Armstrong.

A lot of people have been wondering how this thing works so I'll tell you. That plastic thing with the black lines on it only exposes that little bit of area where the black isn't. So when it passes over the paper which has the ''code'' for animation, it shows only some of the picture. So in more simple terms, All of the weird lines on the paper match a certain different line somewhere else on the paper therefor making them visible at the same time through the plastic thing. As the plastic thing moves, different lines come into view and cause a movement kind of thing. The ''code'' looks like stairs meaning that the animation has movement like going up and down.
This was a pretty bad explanation but I hope this helped. :D

You download pictures of it and print it. As for the paper, I believe you need a certain kind of printer to print it onto transparent paper however I did it a very hard way. I used a regular ink jet printer and although it smeared a little bit where I touched it. It worked out fine. It took an entire night to actually dry though.

I think optical illusions should be a specialisation within any academic arts program, given the complexity, similar to how maths is used to generate art, it often overlaps w science and engineering. Serious exhibits of these would be so neat.
