Wow, I just cannot believe that...I built up a couple full size American 4x4 pickups with big lifts kits, and 40"+ tires, posi front and rear on one, but honestly I don't think they could've pulled that out in the mud, that even looked like clay....but Unimogs have way better clearance as their strange portal axles .....all other 4x4s have Solid diffs that would get hung up in mud, hell even independent suspension still doesn't offer half the clearance of Unimog, that's why it could do that, still amazing

Funny enough the Unimog was conceived as a reaction to the consequences of WWII. Not getting stuck in Russian mud though but having to design and build a vehicle useful for farm work as the Morgenthau-Plan discussed at the time wanted to deindustrialize Germany to the point where only farming and associated industries would be allowed by the allied forces. Hence why producing farming equipment would safe the company from forced closure. By the time the project was completed and the first Unimog was presented to the public (still made by Boehringer, not Mercedes, although Mercedes was involved in the project) the Morgenthau-Plan had been scrapped and didn't threat the German industries any more but the Unimog born from it started it's long successful production run.

Winching the front of the logs off the ground helps a lot - less drag, and more weight on the rear wheels for better traction.
