I live in Jamaica and have a 94 Discovery 1, 200tdi, which I love. I don't play games with it like these guys, though. It's a work vehicle, not a toy. Can't afford to destroy it by being foolish.
legend has it, that the rest of the off roaders are sitting around the fire at night and tell stories of the legendary adventures of the G-class and the Defender, jealous that they can't even come close
@@drueskillz Jeep is good on mud because of the light weight, as is the Jimny. Defender is in a class of its own because of chassis, axles and brutal torque curve of diesel engines..

The Landy has raised suspension which as you can see, is a major hindrence to it climbing. Also has bead lockers to stop tyres being torn off..but neither modification helps with the climbing.
Adam Chabni. Basically those tires seemed over pressurized they need minimal air pressure than their normal pressure. In doing so It'd improve wider tire footprint for better grip and will also reduce vehicles bouncing uncontrollably. BTW Nice video. "Land Rover!"
While the low-end gearing is there on both of these two SUV's, it all boils down to tires, tires, and tires (type of tires and the right pressure for them in tackling such)
i would have to say the defender is the best simply because of the alluminium body and it being simple and cheap to fix compaired to the merc, although both are great 4x4's
@watannen What you need to look at is the torque curve, Landies tend to have better low down torque but it drops off at higher revs, so if you spin a wheel it loses torque. The G has a higher torque peak, so when it starts spinning it gets worse. In this case the Defender got over in less tries, but I don't claim that's a definitive test. But then there's the cost, a Defender can be had in most cases for the cost of servicing the G (slight exaggeration), well maybe servicing and tires.
not just the tires, the lifted clearance raises center of gravity, so i believe a non modified vehicle of the same types could have made it easier, with only proper "not over sized" tires
@watannen the Def. is bouncy cos it has HUGE lift competition springs on it and a tilt axel set up. alsonote how much easier it got up the hill in the first place. It may not have the most powerful engine, but landrover have done such an amazing job at transfering the power to the wheels, with the low range gearbox engaged it has no trouble gettin up there x
@ZoracYTManager Engine size/power isn't entirely immaterial, esp on hills. "Power hill" isn't just an American concept. More torque would allow the use of a higher gear (low 2nd/3rd) which would help suppress wheelspin on the ascent. A 500cc engine would have to be geared so low that there'd be "zilch" energy/momentum & traction would be lost pretty much @ the base
@Gris110 Based on this video, where do yo see the defender is better? Disregarding the fact that the defender is heavily modded too, maybe it's just the driver? No doubt that both cars are great offroaders, but price is no argument when you're out there
Judging by your videos, you're actually not as far away as you could be. Not that far at all relatively speaking, but right now I'm trying to start a career. I've got street tires on my truck right now, being unemployed I can't afford gas getting that far north much less a repair if my rover decided to break. I've got a pipe dream of sticking a Defender body on that disco frame one day, maybe then. :P
if you want a modified mercedes g: the swiss armed forced will sell all of them (about 20'000 i think). very good stuff, i was driving one as i was in the army.
@ZionW0lf That's one of the things that i was saying. The G has a more powerful engine and i think the driver stepped on it a bit too hard and that is why it lost traction and spun its wheels instead of getting up the first time just as the Defender did.
I finished the video and though, great, finally a video that not showing bias for or against something. Just 2 guys in 2 different off-roaders, having fun. Then I read the comments, and alot of people must have been watching a different video than me. They both won, because they both made it.
Both trucks make it to the top of the obstacle, but the Land Rover does it with less fuss, and on the second attempt. Also the Land Rover looks like it has raised suspension, which will not help on a hill like this, as it raises the centre of gravity.
the G had better tires but shorter wheel base.the defender had sucky tires but had a little longer wheel base.the defender won because of that, great truck
In the Late 1970's when Persia (Iran) was ruled by the Shah he was the main share holder in Mercedes Benz, as there was a revolution in the making the shah wanted a reliable and versatile vehicle that was not only reliable and comfortable but one that could be easily adapted for military use and all the variations needed. Then in 1978 the G wagen was in production built by hand in Austria. You either love them or hate them ! Most people who have 4x4's don't even go off road so shouldn't comme
Richard Leaver I hate to disappoint you but I have personally experienced a climb in a Range Rover Sport that was just as difficult. Put a good set of off-road tires on a Range Rover and it will go anywhere either of these two can go. The only people that deny that fact are people that don't know Land Rover very well. I have been off-roading with both and can tell you the stock Range Rover is probably actually more capable when compared to a stock Defender mainly due to it's superior traction control system.
Don't worry, wasn't knocking a Rangy Swampfox, If you look at my channel you'll see the wife has a Freelander 2 HSE, superb machine !, what I meant was, I'd just like to see an 80k Rangy turn up at that moment and take the piss out of every thing else trying to climb that, we both know you could put two of it's wheels on ice on that slope and it would probably still pick it's way up. We went on the Land Rover day out near Skipton, North Yorks when we got the Freelander, they put me on a slope with both it's passenger side wheels on rollers then they said set off again, after a second or two it figured there was something a miss down one side and put all it's power to the drivers side wheels and simply climbed the rest of the hill, stock Landy with stock tyres
@watannen yeh, the gearing is reallyhigh ratio aswell. But the fact stands that the landy obviously dosent need a more powerful engine cos its designed in this way. its much more efficient annd at least 4 times cheaper lol (as many have already said, u could buy 4 brand new def 90's for the same price as 1 G x

@2bornottoby My new opinion is (you should nevver stop to leanr): the G has the better AWD-System (Permament+three lockers+2nd transmission) - the landy is the same except for the lockers (only mid-diff lock). The landy usually has the better offroad-suspension keeping all wheels perfectly on the ground for a long time, while the G-Suspension is much stiffer. In this vid you compared a G500 with a V8 to landy with 2.x engine - so the G is MUCH heavier. i'd prefer a G270 instead
Of course it is. This is what a Audi does to a Defender: ua-cam.com/video/lTSd0iIYLlE/v-deo.html In a G Wagon you wouldn't even notice you're pulling a Defender...even in the Caribbean Islands ;)

Funny how those, like HG, who could never afford a good car, say stupid things! LR is voted the N° 1 car in the world by one or other of the comparison sites almost every year. The Merc - if like the oneI had is just fit for the scrapyard; and, it is not only the driver but 90% of the success is the tyres. The film shows the difference. The LR Traction control is the best in the world. Sorry HG
@acetrucks1 im sure that you mean that everybody turns land rovers and not Gs into offroaders because they are less expensive. Did you know the G was designed for some arabian army back in the 70's or so?. The Defender already existed back then. So if it was SUCH a good car, why did they ask mercedes to build another one especially for them and not buy the existing and MUCH cheaper Defender? You only need to fit a good set of tyres to it and the G will offroad and very rarely break down.
The G is apparently much heavier than the Defender, hence unable to climb up the hills. If in other tests, the G will be better than the Defender, depending.
Landrover iv been using them for years and they have been tough as old boots reliable and go anywhere.. Nuff said

@Schwanzus Longus The G isn't better in all of these, it is a match at best.
Both great 4x4's
Defender is a third the price of a G-Wagon though which makes it a bargain, in relative terms.
I own an AMG. Agree with your statement. That said, the same came be said for the US Jeep Wrangler
The SUZUKI JIMNY at a third of the cost of the cheaper of these two vehicles, would put them both to shame!ua-cam.com/video/GE2W93FBdo8/v-deo.html
