I loved how these were so understated, especially given that the smallest engine option was a 5 litre V8, along with all of that luxury. Most people didn't really know what they are looking at, it really was a special car for those in the know...
They are great cars, but keep in mind they are 15 plus year old luxury cars with a lot of stuff that can break. A buddy of mine had around 12k€ of repairs during 1 Year of Ownership of his Cl500, even though his car was pretty well kept when he bought it.

These are really value for money cars nowadays, the motor and transmission are bulletproof on these the bad things are the SBC brake pump system, Air-matic and if you need to put new brakes on any Mercedes that has a bigger motor than a V6 its gonna set you back a hefty sum.
@Stimpy&Ren I know about the reprogramming but mine was totally done an needed to be changed. I had my E320 for three years and loved it, traded it in 2017 for a Mercury Grand Marquis. But I am planning on getting a CL 500 or 600 (without the bi turbos).

The only thing that puts me off the CL 500, that I had the pleasure to may move for some time, is that Mercedes built the most possible expensive (Gewindefahrwerk) suspension into it. It is an actively adjusting suspension based on an high oil pressure system and electronic sensors with a tiny computer that keeps moving a standard spring suspension. That ABC is perfect until it stops working and even the Mercedes official workshop won't just exchange the sensor, but either the entire pump or suspension part. That's easily 1500 Euros and there are no kits available to exchange the suspension to e.g. standard Bilstein gas shocks or downgrading the system to a passive Citroen Hydropneumatic like system that actually inspired the development of the Mercedes system a decade earlier when both where still competing the the "smoothiest ride possible" category. Sad...the V8, gearbox, space and design is beautiful and with all windows down is almost a convertible....

It is a super relaxed cruiser on both high speed Autobahn and wider country side roads doing distance in comfort. All windows down and roof window open is convertible feeling, but with a coupe safety. Just the pimp image sucks big time, everybody wonders if your girl payed for it... #ihateyou
I think the US firm HIRO Performance makes what you’re looking for. You can search for the model no. HPMB1602JP. Also, Strutmasters does a conversion kit too, but I’ve read that the HIRO one is better.

If both 500 and 55 were fully stock would there be a sound difference? I feel like I want a 55 but 500 is much cheaper and insurance but is the cl55 much more aggressive in sound? Would a cl500 sound growly with a straight pipe/sports cat? Thanks.
I want a cl 55 amg but the 500 isn’t bad at all it’s only problem is there a 490hp version of its self running around and it’s just as reliable of a car
My Peugeot Partner diesel has 170 at 4000rpm and 190 at 4400rpm downhill. It can go up to 5200rpm but not in the last gear. Yes all the cars can go faster but the fuel pump limits the flow that you desire. I guess that all the cars are like that, the engine can go faster but does not receive the amount of fuel necessary to go faster.

are thre any checks that you do to make sure this vehicle is safe for these kind of speeds?
German/Austrian TUV inspections are required and very rigorous from what iv heard.
Check Tire pressure, oil and tread wear.
I’ve heard bad things about this gen of CL and S-Class, yet despite that I still want one.
Only the suspension, you can convert it to coil over for $2000 USD
I got one. The Suspension just a fireplace where you can throw you money in.
