- Today, I am so excited to share this amazing computer with you! This is the very rare IBM Thinkpad 701C with the Butterfly Keyboard! It has something that no other laptop ever had, a folding, Butterfly Keyboard, that IBM called the Trackwrite. In this video, I'll show you this amazing machine, troubleshoot some problems with it, and enjoy Windows 3.1 along with some games on it! Be sure to leave a comment and let me know if you've ever seen one of these amazing machines!!
A huge thanks to David - dmbesq22 in the chat for giving me this amazing system to work on!

Oh man, I had one of these when they came out. I adored that machine. I kept it until the spring mechanism in the keyboard catastrophically failed when I opened it. Started conversations everywhere I went.
That’s awesome, but sorry it broke!
The butterfly keyboard is so cool! I love the epic music you put over it as you opened the laptop lol. I could definitely see how the smaller keyboard would be hard to type on. I love how David named it Carla too, showed he cared a lot about it. That’s amazing it just started booting on it’s own lol Carla has a mind of her own 😂
She sure does! Thanks for watching as always, Nikki! Glad you enjoyed the Epic Music!
Thanks for sharing this video! As always, the video was informative and interesting but also accessible. It was fun to go through the discovery and troubleshooting process with you and see how you had one of those Eureka! moments that we sometimes have when trying to solve a tech problem.
Excellent! Thank you so much! The eureka moments are the best! It feels so good to finally figure it out!
30 years in the industry, and I never heard of this. So cool! At the time, I was working for Mack Trucks, and they were a Toshiba Tecra and Toshiba Satellite shop.
Also Silverball again...ahhh the memories! IRQs and DMAs. My A+ Certification was based on the OG technologies back in the day. I really got to build myself a DOS game machine soon.
That's so cool! I hadn't heard much about this machine either until I saw an LGR video on it. Then, David offered this beauty to me, and I definitely couldn't turn it down! Also, you definitely should build a DOS machine soon!
the computer itself is ULTRA RARE. the bag and extentions is super ultra rare. you're in luck :)
Yes! I feel very fortunate to have it!
Wow, what a crazy gimmick!
ThinkPads were my first laptops too (well, aside from toy ones as a kid) those things were pretty hefty!
It is fun for sure!
Good Sunday morning. This was another great video Josh. The excitement in your voice says it all. Appreciated 👋❤️👍
Thank you so much!
More of and arcade collector but will say the laptop is very cool Josh!
It really is! What kinds of arcade machines do you collect?
Great video Josh!
Thanks!
Loved the begining! Very interesting. That was great that it worked.

I have one of these in mint, almost unused condition. It's for sale.
How much do you want for it? Where is it for sale? Email me - resorttvone - it’s a gmail address. Trying to fool the bots. Lol.
@retrotv1tech tried posting a link but YT killed the response.
Price looks silly to me ....but what do I know about these things.
