- Today, we'll be unboxing some 30+ Year Old Tandy Floppy Disks that are 5 1/4" We'll also be playing some MS DOS Games from these Floppy Disks as well! There's just something nostalgic about playing MS-DOS Games from Floppy Disks!
Radio Shack! That store always had what you needed!
We used to use the 8” floppy discs back in the 80’s at work. Backups were done on them every night!

Single sided disks were normally sold for the TRS-80 stuff, so I'm a bit surprised they're single sided yet branded as Tandy. I still have a whole pile of 5.25" floppies for my Tandy 1000TL. Cool stuff!
We used to use a hole punch and make a notch on the opposite side and make a double sided disk.
Yep, all disks were double sided, but when sold as single sided the second side isn't guaranteed to be good.
Wow, Josh! It's so mind- blowing how far technology has come in a relatively short time! ( and mind blowing that I vaguely remember this tech! 😄)
I agree Sunflower I had games you opened up the box and there was a stack of 10 3 1/2 disks to install before playing
More fun facts, the locking mechanism not only moved the read/write head closer to the disk, but also moved a spindle into the large hole to rotate the disk. That smaller hole had a tiny hole that light shined through to verify the speed of the disk. Also, you could reformat a disk from one machine to another and reuse it. Loving the noise and "speed" of a floppy disk.

Cool. I always bought Single Sided disks in the early days because they were cheaper. By the time the late 80's rolled around most disks available were DSDD. My favorite brands were BASF and Centech color disks. Still have a ton of them. Single sided disks use the same media it is just a matter if they are "Certified" or not on the second side. Also you can re-format a disk as many times as you want. We often recieved IBM formatted disks that we had to format again for Commodore 64 use.

I remember those days. you can also format and make a system disk in one shot with "format b: /s" There are other things you can do with it. If you want to see the hidden files you can do "dir /a:h". The good news is all those commands are documented on the web. I will stick to my modern drives as they are so much faster than the old ones.

I'm 43 years old, and I NEVER realized that logo was of a keyboard LOL. I have a TL/2 that I use almost every day with a WiModem232 to "call" a few BBSes. I still need to boost it to 768k and get a 5 1/4 drive to install.

@@retrotv1tech I HIGHLY recommend one. Plus, you can use them across multiple machines... I've used mine on the Tandy, several Macs, and an Apple IIgs.
Most single sided had an actually good second side. You could put notch on other side to make double sided. I think you had to flip for side two. I think that was how it went. a little while ago.
Got in a bit late to the party, but i believe 'floppy' described the media and not the enclosure. If you open a 3 1/2" disk, the media inside is indeed floppy, just like a 5 1/4. 😉
Yes, that’s true! I took a broken 3.5 disk apart one time. I forgot to mention that in the video. I was just referring to what people used to say about the disks, but you’re 100% correct!
