Great footage of Ilkeston :)
PP,
Well done. Crystal clear photography and interesting. It's been fifty years since I left the area and so I recognised almost nothing as everything seems to now largely be a giant housing estate with minimal signs of industrial units. The best schools have long gone and I see from the census stats. that although most of the population hold little or no school qualifications the region is described as being 'affluent.' Which possibly supports my belief that most generalised schooling is a waste of time, and children (unless academically gifted) would do better spending their time on other things like sweeping chimneys, shoe shines, and torn jeans quick fixers, out in all weathers and contributing to the family purse like good uns.
As Stanton & Stavely (British Steel) Ironworks have long gone (along with many thousands of jobs) I naturally wonder where people work? I only saw a supermarket and small industrial units on this film. Surely not enough to fund the vast numbers of residents?
In a perfect world I would like to return and find the ironworks and Crompton St. perfectly preserved as a museum, providing many jobs and a fabulous tourist draw to the area and lots of new revenue. But what do I know? This excellent but salutary video does not encourage returners.
