while making this selective assessment with SL and Indonesia, SG is ignoring the total number of countries which have muslim majority and how many of them are democracies Or are they all ruled by kings or army or a pseudo democracies like Pak. What about the entire Arab world, what about Lebanon which switch to near-autocracy the moment they went from Christian majority to muslim majority. People like SG who sugar coat and compare with outliers are the reason militant islams are getting a free ride.

SG has really gone old. His ability to think clearly and outside his echo chamber is less. Every momin dreams of an !slamic Caliphate - which actually is an army dictatorship. That exactly are how those countries are. SG doesn't see the straight line between "what they want" and "what they get". Its a different matter if they are satisfied with what they get. Pakistan IS a Caliphate. Perhaps soon, Bangladesh will also become a Caliphate. Cheers and best wishes!

    Democracy in Malaysia?
If a non-Muslim wished to marry a muslim, the law requires the non-Muslim to convert to Islam before the nikah. And the couple is continuously watched by the department of religious affairs. Please check the case of 'Indira Gandi' ( whose husband, subsequently converted to Islam) .
He converted his underaged child to Islam. Indira fought a long court battle to retrieve the daughter back into Hindu. After a decade, there's no escape. Once a Muslim, always a Muslim.
And Indonesia has shariah criminal law in Acheh

Not entirely correct. Some religious systems are fundamentally intolerant with diversity of thoughts, whereas some others are fundamentally plural in their thoughts.
Some believe in good vs evil binary, where some others see shades of gray in its worldview and philosophy.
Electoral democracy means little compared to the notion called "Republic".
Electoral democracy in an immature country will destroy it, where possibly a kingdom kind of things would have worked all, till the foundation of Republics are in place - the propeople institutions of the state.
Electoral democracy is some sort of mobo-crazy only.
The Republic, where citizens and the fundamental inalienable rights are more important, and state, which must always be chained, is fundamentally a matter of convenience.
Naturally all 3rd world countries are banana republics including India.
What is saving India - its civilizational plurality, people are different and they know that and respect that. So binaries do not work here.

You are totally wrong. Turkistan started with Ata turk. A person so fierce in his conviction that Turk culture came first before Islam. He forced a secular country. Just like how, Bangladesh chose the bangla identity in 1971. Here is the problem.. every democracy with Islamic supermajority slowly degrades its fabric of democracy. We see that even in turkey now, the turkey today is nothing like the turkey of 30 years back. Islam only ever remained benign, when a strong man with absolute power ruled forcing moderation.
And stop using bad examples. Indonesia has areas of its country that have Sharia law applied, did not need an army to do that. The only reason it has not applied uniformly across the entire country is because of the natural border of islands.

We cannot take one or two examples here and there (it will be an anecdotal fallacy). At least for the foreseeable future or maybe as long as the earth exists - the school of Islam and their ideology is different - good or bad, I am not judging here - I confine myself to the topics of democracy and progressive ideologies (even we do not know if they are good or bad, we do not know yet - this is a small phase of life compared to 200,000 years of human existence).

Shekhar, I beg your pardon. You are wrong. In India Islam can kill democracy without the Army.
The reason for the “divide” today, I feel is explained in a quote from the book “New clash of civilizations” by Minaz Merchant published in 2013.
“You reap what you sow and if any religious group sow the seeds of communalism by insisting on separate laws (and / or exclusivity) for themselves, they will reap the ill will of communal backlash”
I endorse his view as we have a precedence. The Caste system in India was created by affording separate laws, special privileges and political patronage to the upper castes. We do not want to repeat that by creating another privileged class with separate laws etc.; do we?
A “secular” democracy is one which has the same laws for all its citizens within which different religions practice their faith according to prevalent societal practices. A secular nation is not one which has different laws for different religions, which divides societies, allowing such divisions to be perpetually exploited by vested interests within and outside the country. Only “We the people” can change, without changing core values and just by emerging out of medieval era methods to make a difference in society.
Smell the coffee instead of beating around the bush
    Forward Ho!

one thing noticed is SG is steadfast in his old style views of 1990s-2010. Despite so much criticism in the comments he always stands. his ground. .. there are only 2 things that can be true one is that he does not care about the pulse of the nation or vox populi or he is busy with his editorial stuff does not get enough time to read comments or understand people ..
somewhere if there is something one needs to learn is be consistent in one 's views actions and conduct, come what may. This applies to all Chillao type TV journalists who changed the tone once the verdict went against the ruling dispensation.

Cultures evolve because of their relationship to the land in which they exist. Islam imposes a culture that existed in the deserts of Arabia, a very frugal and conservative culture, wherever it spreads and erases the local culture. The frugal and conservative nature are Islam's strengths. But it erases the local culture that may have existed for thousands of years. What happened to the Egyptian culture that built the pyramids? What happened to the Zoroastrian (Babylonian) culture of Iran and Iraq? What happened to the original cultures that existed in Indonesia and Malaysia? Just telling that Islam is no danger to democracy is simplistic. That is why Islam needs a strong push-back from spreading. It is a cancer which kills the culture which is the soul of the country it spreads. That push-back is happening only in places like Israel, India, and Myanmar.

Talking abut Malaysia and Indonesia, the reason behind their liberalism is the multi ethenic population in both countries and absense of radical elements in political system. History is also one of the major reason too, south east asia, especially Indonesia has a significant influence of Hinduism in historical times and they still kept their roots preserved, which eventually brings the liberal sense in the masses, and which also makes their population less prone to the radical ideology which radical islamist leaders known to use around the world to take over and enjoy the total power on a particular region and people.

Most people never realises the fact, even by media pundits, that Thailand is ruled intermittently by military. The country has seen over 20 constitution and charters one after another. The remarkable thing about thailand is that it is very curiously and mysteriously rarely mentioned in media discourse while others are very frequently wherever democracy vs military issue is discussed.

Religions are a very strong ideological force in every country and a challenge to stable democracy. It takes decades before the right equilibrium can be found. Europe faced this dilemma in the early 20th century and we all know what happened when militarism and religious hatred towards jews got added to fire of german politics. In the case of United States, today people say secularism was enshrined in US constitution but it was only in the post world war era that religion was pushed out of the public sphere , of course not completely even today. All societies evolve beyond religious dogmatism but that requires some reasonable levels of material comfort and at least three/four decades of political stability where existential questions are put to rest.
