I Took My Son And My Jeep YJ To Gulches Off-Road Park

- My youngest Son and I are taking Project Emo out to see just how capable she is. Emo is my 1993 Jeep Wrangler YJ with a 4 inch lift on 33 inch tires, and while they are technically A/T tires, true off-roaders would probably consider them street tires.
(It’s what was on the jeep when I bought, don’t judge)

Took my 10 y.o. grandson to Gulches in my stock TJ and a winch.
Didn’t need the winch. Stuck to mainly beginner trails, just a tiny bit of intermediate.
The look on his face when I asked him if he wanted to drive. He did great. Can’t wait to go back.
That’s awesome!!! 🙌
Some advice for the future, don’t hang onto the roll bar. If you roll over it could take your fingers or hand off. Great video and awesome to get your son out. My kiddos love going in our jeep xj.
Yeah. I need to get the grab handles back on there. That’s good advice!
Yeah, I switched my hand placement because of that.
I've been to the gulches a half dozen times with the last three in my GX470. I camp down on the riverbank and stay pretty much on the easy trails. It's gr8 fun watching the big boys with their big toys but I have to remember that I have to drive mine 3+ hours home. One of the best weekends is in November for veterans weekend.
Project Emo is such a cool little Jeep. Just love it!
Thank you!🙏🏻
Dont bother with lockers in the factory axles, get some swaybar disconnects if you dont have any. Or just pull the sway bar off. Mud tires not any kind of all terrain. Mud tires, east coast wheeling requires a mud terrain of some kind. Flatbelly skid, and SYE. Get all the travel you can out of the leaf springs, then drive it. Your skills and learning to pick the right line will improve greatly. Lockers are awesome, but make it more of a point and shoot jeep and take the challange and learning out of a lot of it. Looks like fun, miss my YJ.
Those are great tips!!
So nice to see YJ content that isn't about bashing on them.
Thanks! Yeah I don't want to bash it, have fun, yes, break and body damage. Nope. 😂
The expression of your son is priceless. Love seeing how much fun you and your friends were having . I need to ask you on IG the names of two particular trail obstacles
Please drop some lunchbox lockers in that YJ. They call them lunchbox, because they can be installed in around an hour, by anyone. You should do a video about it. The front ones never cause an issue, because when you are in 2wd on the pavement, they do nothing because there is no drive (torque) pushed through them. Sometimes they click in the rear when going around sharp corners, but I think the YJ is a perfect platform to run them. Check out Spartan and Powertrax for some good options. They are 100% mechanical, so no electrics or compressors needed, and they run standard gear oil. They also do not require you to regear, so you do not have to fine tune or adjust anything. Just pull the spider gears and drop in the lockers. They automatically unlock to let the outside wheel “over-rotate” when cornering.
Yeah I’ve been looking at some Spartan lunchbox lockers, it’s a possibility for sure! Thanks! 🙏🏻
Shocked those nurf steps survived. Excellent video
Yeah. Some real sliders are on my list now. Those steps feel like they are going to break off every time I stand on them. 🤣
As a yj owner great to see yj on trails got a 90 yj build up a little
Thanks!!
Me and my two sons passed you guys on the trail at Gulches when you were about to winch out the burgundy jeep from the first mud hole. We were in my white 1989 Toyota 4Runner with the black bikini top. Just stumbled across your channel and recognized you guys from Gulches. Pretty cool, it was our first time there.
Hey! Great to have you here! I remember your 4Runner! Glad you had a great time!
Looks like a lot of fun!!
Yeah it was a blast!
Good video man. I have a 89YJ and absolutely love it. I tossed out the track and sway bars and welded my diffs. Then changed the vacuum disconect to a cable. I would suggest roll cage or factory rollbar extentions with a pillar bar. My wife rolled mine and the winshield collapsed. So i built a full cage. I have the 2.5 with 5.13 gears on 37s. I am out west mostly rock crawling. I also did spring over (SOA) ive run the rubicon and most of the time we are running johnson valley trails. King of the hammers trails. I love to see yjs out there wheeling hard. Keep up the good work man i look forward to aeeing what all you do to it. Stay safe and happy trails 👣
Thank you so much. Your YJ sounds awesome. Are you running that gearing and tire size on the stock Dana 30 and 35?
@@SimplyMustGo stock dana 30 but replaced the 35 with a 8.8 after breaking an axle. Just swapped to the 37s so we will see how the 30 holds up but i wheel pretty hard. So i may end up going back down to the 35 in tires. I wheel with dirtnation on YT. The black yj if you get a chance to watch any of the videos.
@@SimplyMustGo you can see mine in action on dirtnation offroad epic recovery johnson valley. Broke on a trail and was dead in the water lol only had one working wheel 🙃
fun times! I bet your son had almost as much fun as you did! :)
He may have had more since he didn’t have to worry about being able to drive it home after. 🤣
Looks like a fun day! Time for some new shoes! If you want to stick with AT's, look into Falken Wildpeaks, they are very good. Or the falken RT which is still an AT/ hybrid but more aggressive, almost into mud tire territory but not quite.
Thanks! I’ll check those out. Part of me wants to get the new KO3s
That looked like a fun ride!
We had a blast!!
😂 great fun with ur son and friends Matt that YJ is definitely better suited for those trails than our JTs 💪
Yeah. I would t even want my JKU on some of those trails.
Great video. Looks like everyone had a great time. I was thinking about heading there sometime. Your video sold me. I definitely want to take the Red Beast there now.
Nice! Yeah it was fun! We’ll be back for sure.
Great little place. We shoot competitions next store and then take the yj for some fun
That’s awesome!
What competitions? I didn’t know there were competitions in that area. But I haven’t done comp.s in a number of years.
Great video and looks like a fun place to explore! I’m going to have to make my way down from NC to check it out sometime!
Yeah it’s a fun place to go play!
Got a list of the blue trails you guys did here? Trying to gauge which trails will fit our Ram TRX when we head over there in a month.
I don’t have a specific list, but ended up doing most of them I think. If you go to their website you can see the maps and that might help.
Good stuff. Nice seeing 2 drs out there. Well done.
Thanks! Yeah it’s fun having something smaller on these trails.
I had a YJ for many years, I would like to own one again. But my new 2 door JL reminds of my old YJ because of the open diffs and horrible ride on the street and convertible top…I keep telling my wife the ride is not that bad as my old YJ.
Haha. But there’s still something awesome about them.
Gulches is on my list. Cheers!
Yeah it’s a fun place!
@@SimplyMustGo Any advice for a stock JLUR?
@@WreckedBrewery I'd say watch this one... ua-cam.com/video/3hktSu9J3Ik/v-deo.htmlsi=Tyx_LCqJIqWxu3uW
That's when I did it in my Stock JKUR, Green did fine. Most blues did ok, but you'll hit your skids for sure.
Great video! Project Emo did great!
Thanks! I appreciate it! It was a fun time!
This was super fun we need to do it again
Yeah it was great. Did you get the tire carrier fixed?
Damn! Simply Must Send on this video. Great video Matt! This off-road park reminds me of what we typically have here in BC as well 🙌🏽
Haha. I would love to be up in Bc at some point!
Best thumbnail ever!!!
Haha thanks!🙏🏻
That mud looked intense!! Great video. And I’m glad Will’s phone was ok 😊
Yeah. I’m just glad it wasn’t me in the mud.
Nice video!😊
Thank you!🙏🏻
Are you still using sway bar & track bars? If so, try a track not using them & see the difference
I was literally just telling some I think I’m going to take all that off. 💪🏻
@@SimplyMustGo Yea, you will notice the difference
@@SimplyMustGo No track bars or sway bars on mine. Huge difference off road, even when stock.
We should put a camera on you next time
The camera is usually on me...
@@SimplyMustGo Not on this video lol
I know I’m out of place because I’m not a jeep guy, but I really want to take my Tacoma here and see how it would do.
Do it!! It’s not just for Jeeps. You’ll have a blast!
Good work! I think if you started talking about meaning of life your son would have a heart attack judging by his look through during tight situations :D.
Hahaha. 😂
“If you see water,it’s deep”
Haha. Yeah there for sure.
Open diff looks less likely the culprit than not airing down.
