DIY Drawer System Build For Overlanding / Camping. Save big money by building your own!

- We show in great detail how you can build your own at a fraction of the cost. Not just a typical camping drawer system, this is more like an overland galley!
For this overland drawer system we used readily available materials and basic carpentry skills to build it. You don’t have to be a master craftsman or have a fully equipped woodworking shop to build a camp kitchen you'll be proud of.
The information in the video is easily translated to fit in any SUV for camping, or to build your own custom homemade truck drawers.
One minute and thirty seconds in and I already know this one of the most informative videos out about building from scratch to fit the vehicle.
Thanks Desmond!
I'm currently designing ny own drawer system for an F150 bed and was glad I found this, lots of good info.
The case joints are good, but they would be even better by using better plywood. For those that have access to it, Baltic birch plywood should be he only consideration here. It is made of all hardwood layers of the same thickness, no softwood filler like this plywood. Both may hold up very well for s long time, but for anyone looking to improve the design, this would be the simplest way.
The groove style is common in cabinetry joints, but those are static and get supported off the wall and the floor. Larger sections of material should be left if at all possible, but you were using 1/2 ply, cabinets are 3/4. 1/2 for all drawer parts, and maybe 3/8 for bottoms of big drawers, 1/4 for small drawer bottoms would work. And 3/4 for your main case structure sides and top, bottom could be 1/2 to save weight.
Kinda guessing this is beyond 80% of most people now, myself included. Did enjoy it.
This is an EXCEPTIONAL tutorial. So many gems. Keep it up.
Thanks Austin! And thanks for watching!
Thank god! No stupid music. Great job guys.
Wow is all I can say. That's easily a $850+ drawer system now. Amazing work so glad I found yalls channel.
Welcome aboard!
@@WanderlostOverland thank you!
Very nice! Looks like good quality workmanship. I didn't realize that you could make dove-tailed joints without special equipment. 🙂 Fantastic idea!
Really splendid, I am from India 🇮🇳
It's really lovely work. 👍👍👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Form and function, beautiful work. Keep up the awesome work. Love all yells videos!
Way more than I'm willing to take on, but that was a great video! Super high quality!
I thought I was watching HomeTime. Outstanding workmanship and great explanation.. Thank again
While editing, watching some of the clips, I thought to myself; OMG I sound like a PBS woodworking show. :)
Thanks for watching!
Love u guys
We love you... From Saudi Arabia❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Wow! This is the closest to cabinet making as I have seen on any home built truck project. All these camping out of my truck videos is getting me stoked to save up for a truck cap.
Thanks Dave! And thanks for watching.
p.s. Just a reminder: Our t-shirt fundraiser for TreadLightly ends October 19th. Make a donation and get a cool Wanderlost t-shirt! Here's the link to our fundraising site. It explains all the details: markmerri.wixsite.com/wanderlost-overland
A man with skills.Well done!
GREAT video.
THANKS!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Outstanding job.
Great work! That 4Runner build is amazing, the best part is that you guys do all the work! Great job.
Thanks! Yup, we do all the work, even when we don't know what we're doing. 😃
Fantastic video, just the right amount of viewer engagement/entertainment/cute coupleness without being cringey. The details are extremely clear and precise without being verbose, the demonstrations and camera work is onpoint. Really, can't overexagerate how well you nailed the DIY informative video. I give you a 10/10 and wish more tubers made content this way. Keep up the good work and approach some broadcasting networks about making a show, could be a great opportunity.
THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!!!
Guys, subscribed yesterday, a little tip to using a larger drill bit to countersink screws is to put the drill in reverse to save drilling too deep. You must admit we've all done it and gone too deep or straight through... lol 😆
Great job. Clever design and great woodworking skills. I think you could actually make and sell those if you wanted to. The only thing I would do differently is maybe make the mounting mechanism with a locking lever or something similar instead of bolts. That way if one needs the space to haul cargo, one can easily remove the cabinet without the need for tools.
Great video showing some impressive carpentry!!
Thanks 👍
So happy you couple finished this useful and fun project, this kind of drawer on market cost over $1000 dollars, beside money, that's tons of fun! Well done!!! :)
This is really beautiful cabinet making and so well designed. Thanks for showing how it’s done. Lots of skill and practice but not a lot of complicated tools.
Thank you very much!!!
Woah, i like how you got it all done, lots of good tips and tricks shared. Thx
Glad you liked it!
Awesome design/build. I dont have a table saw, so making ANYTHING out of wood precisely is almost impossible, but I at least have an idea of how to get it done now...We shall see!
I know this was published over a year ago but I just came across it. Very well built system. I have been thinking of a drawer system for my JK but just can't bring myself to pay what the retailers want. For about a 1/3rd the price, your system looks just as good if not better plus I can say "I built it". Thanks for a very informative video....+1 subbed
Thanks Jon! And thanks for watching!
Really good looking drawer and easy to use
Hahahah... love your playful intro. Crazy funny!
I have been in the market to find myself a new 4Runner and just spend the last few hours watching all your videos about your 4Runner an i just wanted to say that by far you guys have the best content i have found and is very informative. you guys rock. Hope to See you guys make your way to southwest Wyoming in your future adventures. The Uinta Mountains make for fun off road adventures and camping.
Thanks Dylan! Wyoming is by far our favorite state to explore. We'll see you out there someday.
Amazing job! Can definitely tell someone has some cabinetry experience. Definitely on my list of things to do. Hoping mine comes out half this good!
Makes it easier when you have the know how!😀😀😀
Nice job 👍🏻 I also built my own cabinet for my Jeep. It’s fun to see the different designs people come up with. See ya out there.
Thanks!
Hell when yall well, and yall aint never sick.
Great build! I was hoping to see it go in that beast of an FJ because I'm currently building drawers for mine.
You are so nice couple! Thank you for ideas. This is amazing build :)
Good looking storage box. I hadn't thought of using that style of hardware for the table top.
Get your own that cracks me up.
Great work guys! Thanks for another video!
You're very welcome Max!
I love that slide out bench space from the draw. might give it a go making one of them to sit under my fridge slide. going to have to dig out some of dads wood work equipment to have a go a building drawers for my two rigs.
R&R Photography yes, that extra counter space is super handy. Got a chance to use it on this trip to Jambo.
Looks great, I wish I had your carpentry skills and patience!
Thanks 👍
those drawer slides are so nice, but so much $$$$
Great stuff guys, I don't have a 4Runner yet (2020) but I'm watching all of your videos for ideas when I do get it !
Excellent filming.
A great video with simple explanation and details, the draws look fantastic.
I love it!! Keep it up!! 👍👍👍
Thank you! Will do!
Thanks for the inspiration !
Really well done, love those joins, but please use a mallet in future. My hands were hurting just watching!
This a quality project
Thanks!
Great work! It would be helpful if you put the links of the hardware in the description.
Solid work! Very impressed 👍
Thank you!
Well done. I am officially jealous. ;-) Need to get my high lift jack out of the back so I can build my drawers.
Great job
Love the "Cartman" background music at 8:05.
Amazing!! Most thoughtful design and finishing I've ever seen.
So nice! Master craftsman at work :) I'm going with 80/20 framing and bolt on face panels as I've got no wood working tools or skill...
Great job! Looks awesome. You are motivating me to build out our 4runner.
That's great to hear!
fantastic video, nice camera work, great explanations
Thank you so much 😀
Hi,
It would be nice if you give the links to your items you used in making this unit like hinges etc.,
Also if you started a new tool for first time in this project .. you can mention it and provide the source links that will enhance viewers pleasure and to comeback and visit your channel for that additional knowledge
Hope this suggestion helps you.
BTW: Thanks for your time in making this for us and sharing with us
I am kicking myself, all the server rack drawers I have thrown out over the years.
Love the videos. I'm a cabinet maker also and am making a drawer system for a friends 5th Gen so your tips were a lot of help.. Thank you...
Dovetail joint are better. You have to smack the sides apart with a hammer. And when you pull the drawer front, it pulls the rest of the box with it.
I agree, dovetails are better, especially for the fronts. However, a finger joint is almost as strong if done right. We chose joints that just about anyone can make with basic woodworking tools. Not everyone has a dovetail jig, the knowledge on using it, nor the router bits necessary. Thanks for watching!
Very well done. Easy to follow. Thanks for sharing. I plan on building this for my truck. One note, it would be nice if you would put links to the products you used. Thanks again. Happy camping!!
That was a terrific video, nice craftsmanship! I hope to see you both again soon😎
Great job guys.
Thanks Paul!!!
16:27 You mention the catches for the pull out table. What did you use for those? I know this is an old video. I am replicating this table in my build. Thanks.
What was the final weight of the system and what was the total cost? Thanks! Excellent video!
This is one great set up. Will definitely use this as inspiration! Won my sub
Awesome! Thank you!
This is, hands down, the best looking, best out together, hand-built system out there. No interest in making one for $, is there?
We've been asked but have a strict policy to never get into the manufacturing end of our projects. :)
I enjoyed this! Thanks for a great video!!!
Thanks for watching!!
Nice build...drawer sizes? Counting the fingers and without the drawer faces looks like top is 5.75", mid 8" (without the pullout) and bottom 7". But that can't be right as the opening is only 21" with the dimensions you gave, leaving only 1/4" gap for spacing. Just the mid drawer pull out alone would add 3/4". Tx!
Updated: I see, you raised the groove (and therefore drawer bottom) for the 3/4" pull out. Sounds like it's right after all.
Just curious, Do I need to have a bottom or replace that with L brackets to my floor? Seems that the slides would create the bottom structure of the box and could just use L brackets at the sides base. Just wondering if you had done that before. Seems a waste to bolt a box floor to another floor like Goose Gear floor as an example.
This video came out a year ago. I immediately started building this and I'm almost finished...
Only a year? :)
nice video! That's a TON of cutting to get all those finger-joints. I would have liked to see some wisdom/advice on measuring for building the drawers to fit with the slides.
Next time!
Nice Job!! I see some carpentry in my future.
Wow I've seen alot builds. I used to build and homes anything with wood man I miss it hate being disabled and not able to make nice stuff anymore. But I have a truck I've been wanting a box built that's got to be water proff only gonna have a ladder rack but I'll have plywood on top to keep stuff kinda dry. Exspecialy rods and reels and all. I use tool boxes in the back down the side when my bed was bigger new truck smaller bed. So I want a box on the floor of the bed between the fenders all the way back. Having 2 draws. For fishing gear some camping and ide love to build a box for stove and sink like in SUV but not able anymore. If I had a shop ide got my daughter to help been single dad for 18 years now she's been a big help. Sometimes lol. She's a girl lol. NAw but if I had shop or shed I could take my time. But tryed to set one up in the home didn't work to much junk lol. But yea I love your build. Ide love it if I seen a vidoe of someone close to me that lived to build to build like I did ide help anyone just to help. Even after I got hurt ide help cause I missed building homes and what ever. Well y'all have a great week have fun out in the wild county. God bless
Awesome video! Graham Cayhill from 4WD Action Australia said in an interview recently that Overlander channels need to have a beautiful gal along otherwise it is just a weird dude living out of a truck, so you got that covered ;) Awesome detail, and nice job explaining how to cut the joinery without a dado stack (I Keep one table saw set up for rabbits all the time, I couldn't live without my dado stack set!!). Perhaps for Father's Day your queen could get you a Fuller Countersink Set ( I like my #8 set )
Ewing Fox aww, how sweet, thanks. I will think about getting him the fuller countersink set, although he would probably want more car stuff instead. It seems like his list is ever growing. 😁
good stuff!!
Thanks for watching!
Awesome videos! Looking forward to watching more! Just found you off of @allthingsoverlanding
Welcome aboard!
You guys are funny
Good video, Thanks for sharing ✌
Thanks for watching!
You guys make great videos - nice carpentry skills ! What cutter do you use to cut out the finger joint slots ?
Thanks! It's a stacked dado cutter.
@@WanderlostOverland Well I never knew those existed ! Learn a new thing every day.
Mate this is going to help some much with my build, great video mate with heaps of great ideas
Im building my second set, well done guys
Great Video!! Very detailed i have a question did you make your drop down table or did you buy it and if so what brand is it
That came with our rear bumper from CBI.
Hello, I understand this video is from a few years ago but are there any detailed instructions for this build or a written plan? I’d like to scale this down for my vehicle
Great vid guys! 👍 very informative
Great built, you mentioned the base is in another video, would you mind to post a link.
Here ya go: ua-cam.com/video/nT3TWfTZ5xU/v-deo.html
Super
Thanks
Very impressive. Just wondering why you didn't use the dado joints on the draw sides and fronts and opted for finger joints instead?
Finger joints are simply stronger. Thanks for watching!
@@WanderlostOverland Excellent - thanks for the reply. Horses for courses.
Amazing... Great workmanship.
Thanks for the video
Nice project and nice to see both of you guys🙂 Old yeller is still looking good👍
Thanks for watching! Yup, she's still our favorite!
Awsome! what’s name of the foldable support for the coffee table? Thank you
Like it. I don't suppose you've got a hard copy of y'all's plans.
Glad you liked it! Sorry, since it's custom made to our own dimensional needs, we don't have any detailed plans to share.
@@WanderlostOverland that's cool. It was a thought as I plan what I'm gonna do for my JKU. I like to see plans so I can adapt them for measurements and needs.
Did you say what thickness of plywood your recommend for the drawers?
1/2"
must use safety glasses !!!! with nailer
Nice vid. I want to build a strong drawer system for my Jeep JK but don't have the woodshop tools to make the grooves.
Can I just make jig holes and use L-brackets to make them strong?
Yes, absolutely!
I don't know why you nailed the corners after glue up. You already said that the plywood would fail before the glue joint. In all my years of cabinetmaking I have *never* had drawer boxes fail when made like you did. Excellent job otherwise. Very well explained.
You make it look so easy but from my experience working with wood and the little things I’ve built that’s not easy at all. You have to be a cabinet maker or something to have it turn out that good.
It does take some knowledge of tools and materials. I've been building furniture and cabinets since a very early age. My father bought me my first table saw when I was ten.
Time to start using the superior metric system
What, and be like the rest of the world? Not a chance! :)
NICE CABINETS. BUT USUALLY YOU HAVE SOME OUTGASSING FROM THE POLIURATANE AND GLUE. AND SINCE YOU ARE VERY CLOSE TO THE LEACHING GAZ WHAT DO YOU DO FOR VENTINATION.
No dangerous or even noticable outgassing at all.
