This is magical. I've been following you since we performed together way back in April of 2011 at one of Beth Morrison's Liederabends. Your bold, intelligent, and emotional art-making is an inspiration to me (and so many others, I'm sure). I discovered Gabriel on the same evening. A double treasure. Many moments of beauty revealed, and the feeling as a listener of discovering them along with you. I have been listening to Keith Jarrett's 1975 Koln Concert; the first movement is improvised based on a simple 4 note motif. Honest Labor springs to life as we listen, and I wonder; what is the role of improvisation in your composition process? Does a completed work ever become the framework for extended improvisation?

Thanks for listening, Tony. I’m not much of an improviser, no. But most of my music works by gradually developing a very simple idea, similar to some forms of improvisation.
