Such a fantastic topic! I enjoyed to learn about your favorite Bordeaux second wines and second labels! You have such a wealth of Wine knowledge and experience, John! 💫 Thanks for sharing this valuable information with us, it's really helpful video! Cheers! 🍷🍷
Really nice video, John! I love the idea of the “cellar defender”-it’s a great concept and so important, especially for left bank Bordeaux. I’ve been collecting the Pichons for years, and I love Reserve de la Comtesse, the second wine of Pichon Comtesse. It’s just great, has the unmistakeable Pauillac violet and graphite that transports you right to the winery, and you can get it in futures for under $50. I love it and buy it annually. I wasn’t thinking about cellar defense before your videos, but it’s saved many a bottle of second growth Bordeaux over the years!
Thanks very much for your thoughtful comment! Yes, the Pichon Comtesse second wine is also an excellent choice! Very pleased you enjoyed the video! Cellar defenders are invaluable to help preserve wines that should be aging! Cheers! 👍🍷
Great Topic! 2nd wines/2nd labels has been my strategy for exploring new regions such as Super Tuscans (new to me). I would be very interested to see a similar video on other regions.
Another gem! I love your Cellar Defender series John! What a great topic to educate the wine world on! I will now be praying every vintage for the first wine to get the smallest percentage of fruit so that I can quickly grab bottles of the second wine!! Cheers, my friend!!🍷🍷
Very interesting topic, John. I watched most of your video and I will finish a little later. The only second wine I can think of right now is Le Serre Nuove, Ornellaia’s little brother. 😂! I appreciate your suggestions as well as your stellar presentation. Thank you so much for your dedication to the world of wine. Cheers!
Love the second wine and second label recommendations. I particularly love Chateau Talbot which makes me think I need to try their second wine. Thank you for the content and more like this would be amazing. cheers
Please make more videos in which you describe the differences between leftbank and rightbank. Thanks so much for your videos. They are so full with informatiin. It would be a pleasure to meet in the future. Do make classes as well where I could learn more about that? I'm very interested in the wset levels. I want to study them. Unfortunately my knowledge about wine, my sensoric quality is very basic. I need to improve that. Please could you also give me an advice which is must have literature to step into that big, complex world?
Thanks very much! I do have a video about the WSET courses. If you are interested in that I can send it. I also have many videos about different producers on both banks. Cheval Blanc discusses the right bank quite a bit and I just did a shorts video on St Emilion.
Another terrific episode of wine education, John! I learned so much about second wines and labels--I feel like my wine game is a little stronger as a result! :) I would love to hear more on this topic pertaining to other regions. Thanks so much for all the effort you put into increasing the knowledge flow of wine!
This is such an excellent and educative video as always, John! I really enjoyed learning all about second wines and labels. Thank you for sharing your knowledge! Cheers!
Nice topic...2nds have always been a challenge for me...determining if they are worth the cost...particularly Napa 2nds. Recently dipped my toe into Scarecrow m. Etain, Harlan Maiden
Great video! As an experienced gourmand in the world of food but a relative novice in the world of wines, I have very much enjoyed watching your very informative and education videos.👏🙏 I'd be curious to know your thoughts on Cos d'Estournel's 2nd wine (Pagodes de Cos, specifically the 2019 vintage). I'm tempted to open it sometime next year...😄
@@AttorneySomm, you're a big reason why I decided to start my nascent exploration of the Left Bank with Pagodes and Chateau Tronquoy Lalande (another of your recommendations). The 2017 of the latter is already been a big hit with me and my dining companion.🥳😋 Thank you!!
Nice. I really like Le Marquis de Calon-Segur 2018, 2018 Calon-Segur is rated very highly and reviews sound awesome. Marquis Calon is awesome and i've purchased it for $32-33 a bottle. Capbern made by the same team of Calon Segur is a awesome value of a wine in 2018 and 2019 the18 really rocks for as low as $25-$30 a bottle. I really enjoy 2018 St Estephe wines i have yet to try the 2019's.
Have to say that some top 2nd labels are excellent wines but they still are very different in many ways (especially the style) to their big brother. Many drinkers think the 2nd labels as the junior 1st labels, unfortunately they are not, therefore the price comparison of the 2 seems to be irrelevant. So for me, I just compare the 2nd labels to other Bordeaux wines at the the same price range. For example, Pavillion Rouge ($250+) & leoville las Cases (cheaper in many vintages), the latter is much better than the former.
@@AttorneySomm just my 2-penny opinion. Really appreciate your knowledge of wines & the passion of sharing that are the most rewarding for wine enthusiasts.

another tour de force, john! once i had 2nd of smith-haut lafite WHITE which blew me away. how about making a clip on sin qua non wines stable?
Thanks very much! Also appreciate the suggestion. I'll give that some thought and add it to my list. Definitely enjoy the SQN wines and the spinoffs.

I do struggle with the Harlan third wine at more than $100.

Alright what about defenders of cellar defenders?

Why does he not spell out the names of these wines in the notes?
I've been doing that for a couple years now. This is one of my earlier videos.

Do you use teleprompter?
I ask you about it because you speak like a robot. No emotion, no emphasis, no pauses. Cold and boring.
I do not. YT editing videos suggest removing the pauses so historically I’ve edited them out.
