Very glad you enjoyed the selections! Definitely try to include wines at a variety of price points so there is something for everyone. Cheers! Thank you!
Great video! Guidalberto is my favorite second wine and I stock it every vintage. As Cos d’Estournel is a stellar wine, I will have to try Pagodes as well. Santé!
I rarely buy the same wine twice because I like to try around but the second wines from Pichon Lalande or Haut-Brion always seem to find their way into my basket so I love to see them included here. The Comtesse Reserve is an absolute steal of a wine.
Great video. I also left a comment about the second wine of Ducru Beaucaillou on someone’s question. Le Petit Lion I think is an outstanding wine and have been able to find some of the newer vintages for $50. Another that is pretty decent for the price is the second wine of Chateau D’issan at $30 or a little less. I have several bottles of Le Clarence de Haut Brion that I haven’t opened yet, but I did buy three bottles of the 2006 when it was still called Chateau Bahans and thought it was excellent.
Agree pichon comtess reserve is a steal! Thanks for the recommendation! I have learnt a lot from your contents, they are curated in a way packed with so much information yet in a pace easy to follow. It is almost just like opening a bottle of wine, it develops well and leave behind a lingering aftertaste. Cheers🎉
The jump in prices for 2022 Bordeaux futures is quite insane compared to last year. I know it's supposed to be a great vintage but 35% increase on some of these estates is quite pushing it in an economic down turn with the increasing interest rates.
Thanks for weighing in. Agree the prices are aggressive. 2021 was also a pretty weak vintage where prices were lowered. The better comparison is to 2020 I think. Lots of excellent 2018-2020 still in the pipeline.
Another (minor) problem is they're early-drinkers, because they were so ripe. So they will be competing with 2009, 10, 15, 16, and lesser chateaux 18, 19 & early-drinking 2020s. You'll need to be a full-blown alcoholic, 2027-32.😃
great choices. just got back from a 9 day cruise on regent. many of these wines are on the menu and are bought at prices you wouldnt believe and i think the reason is they are duty free. the cos de estournel was on menu for less than 200. may of the wines have already been aged. For those wine connoisseur's out their regent give you the best for the least.(not a promo)
Nice vid, and glad I have a couple of these in my cellar! What do you think of the Ducru Beacalliou second wines (Petit Ducru and Le Croix de Beacalliou)? I’ve bought a few of those from 2019, but so far resisted the temptation to open one.
Thank you! I'm a fan of both of them. I mentioned La Croix in another video so did not repeat it here, but it is excellent and the 2019 vintage may be the best vintage yet for that wine. I think both are in the very early portion of their window, but certainly no rush and they will definitely improve with some more bottle age. Cheers!
Super information,So Sassicaia is always blend of Cabernet Savingnon and Merlot? Or could be Cab and Cab.Frank? And what you can say about St.Emilio Chateau Lassegue?
Thanks! The top wine is generally mostly Cab S with some Cab Franc too. The second wine has more Merlot and is meant to enjoy younger. I need to try the Lassegue wines. Have not had the opportunity yet. Cheers!
It is a bit unusual these days, but both wines seem to have turned out well. Cheval Blanc yields were still quite low overall, that wine has received rave reviews and some say it may be one of the best ever. The Giscours seems promising as well.
I should like to add another spectacular “cellar defender”…..La Gravette de Certan, the second wine of Pomerol Vieux Chateau Certan, which is now going for around $400/bottle while the gravette is always under $100
There is a second wine in Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan, that is TRULY DELICIOUS: “La Croix de Carbonnieux”, from Château Carbonnieux. Don’t miss it!
Thanks for letting me know! Certainly very interesting. I'll have to give some thought to whether or not it might be capable of some sort of protection. Hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend!
The phrase has been around a while. I first heard it tasting wine with a collector who had a lot of wine. He said it was fun to drink wine with a wine nerd. He could drink wine with his neighbor but then it didn't matter if they drank a $10 bottle or a $200 bottle as his neighbor just did not have the palate for wine. So his concept of a cellar defender was a wine you would enjoy drinking but it would also stop you from opening something amazing that your guest just would not understand/appreciate/critically analyze.

I am very grateful noble John that among so many amazing French wines you also made affordable wines available for me to collect. Thank you so much.

Great call on Pagoda de Cos... I still have two magnums of 2016 in the cellar. We'll have to pop one in person!
Thank you! Sounds like a plan! 👍🍷💪🏻

Thanks for weighing in! Appreciate your input. Agree with you about d’Issan too. That 06 may be the last vintage before the name change.
Agree pichon comtess reserve is a steal!

Thanks very much! Glad you enjoy the Comtesse Reserve as well! Appreciate the kind feedback! Cheers!
With some of the top wines getting out of my price range, I think I’m going to start trying some of these second labels
@@FridayFishFacts Hope you enjoy them!
John congratulations for the always amazing information, best wishes from Goiânia, Brazil
Muito obrigado! Appreciate the positive feedback, my friend. Saude!
Had a 2014 Pagodes de Cos two years ago and it was outstanding.
Thank you! An excellent second wine. Glad you enjoyed it! 👍🍷

I think La Croix is outstanding and was able to pick up a case of the 2019 for $44 per bottle. I only had the 2017 before that and really enjoyed it.
@@MichaelH-ck4hg Thank you! Agreed. That one is excellent too.

@@АнастасияБородуля-ц9г I know it is owned by the Jackson family. I'll keep an eye out for it!
what do you think about Cheval Blanc and Chateau Giscours saying they are using 100% of the grapes in the 1st wine for 2022?
It is a bit unusual these days, but both wines seem to have turned out well. Cheval Blanc yields were still quite low overall, that wine has received rave reviews and some say it may be one of the best ever. The Giscours seems promising as well.

I prefer Cabernets or something like Clos de Napa. Am I a low-life?
Many of the wines in here are dominant Cabernet. The Napanook is Napa Cabernet.
I wish you continued ❤
Thank you! Much appreciated.
Just thought I would tell you how wine retailers are using your term “cellar defenders” in their email ads….too bad you didn’t patent the phrase

Did anyone ever tell you that the way you speak is somewhat reminiscent of Donald Trump?
No that is a new one.
Wow, really? Not hearing it.
