As a peruvian, living in Peru, I feel closer to Anya. When you listen to her you feel something familiar, I feel like we could speak about common experiences and share similar cultural codes, that's completely different to Jenna. Beeing Latino is not only sharing a language but cultural codes as well. Being Latino is not racial at all, you could be white as a Sweden or black as a subsaharian african and be equally Latin.

@@oscarolvera9069 Exactly, there are over 60 millions latinos in the US and those who are born here/come very young go through a different experience. When they back to their home country they are made fun because their Spanish isn't perfect and here they are asked "where are you from?" implying that they are not from here. Uno crece como ese sentir que no es de aqui ni de alla and at the end it branches out into a different latino experience igual que un Mexicano en Mexico or un Argentino en Argentina, un Dominicano en Republica Dominicana. US latinos create their own identity as well.

The thing I LOVE about Anya (as an Argentinian myself) is that she doesn't FORCE IT. She seems a lot more relaxed and authentic. I feel like in the US the "conversation" is just telling them what they want to hear about what latin American people look like or do. So that's why they are more prone to claim that Jenna is a "latina" without even questioning it. I've had my "argentinianness" questioned while traveling in Miami because I'm too white and speak English too well, which just tells you there are heavy preconceived notions of what a latina looks like.

It's probably because Ortega's been told to go around everywhere to the press representing Hollywood's feeble attempts at diversity whilst Taylor-Joy's probably been told to keep her mouth shut cause Ortega looks more Latina than Taylor-Joy. Looks are all that Hollywood needs to fulfill its diversity quota after all, people's original culture and heritage be damned.

She does it exceptionally well, to the point you can't believe she's also fluent in English, because Spanish sounds like her native language. I'm from Argentina, and I'm telling you: people who aren't native Spanish speakers, sadly, will never appreciate how good her Spanish is. On top of that, she has a perfect Argentine accent, which is kinda mind blowing.

@@sodapopjam I said I can't believe she's also fluent in English. Being able to speak two languages is normal, but being fluent in two of them, while keeping your accent for both, is not. I said her accent is mind blowing because she has an exceptionally good one. Ana De Armas also speaks Spanish and grew up speaking that language, but she lost her accent because she was speaking English for a long time, and you can hear how it's getting worst and worst as time goes by. This is something that, as an English speaker, is pretty hard to tell, the same way we, Spanish speakers, have a harder time noticing the differences between different English accents.
Anya, currently, makes mistakes, but she didn't lose her accent. As someone pointed out in another answer, her mistakes are normal, and you see those often when someone gets used to another language because he/she was living in another country for a long time. You seem to believe that growing up in another country and then moving to USA = keeping your perfect native language accent for the rest of your life, or that you'll never forget words after not using them for over a year. That's not the case.
The comment should be easy to understand if you have a semi-functional brain. She has a good accent, and her Spanish is really good, but English speakers can't tell exactly how good it is, both for someone who grew up speaking the language, and in comparison to others who also did.

I agree with you. It's just that the way things are here in the States, if you're white looking of European heritage, particularly more so northern European, by the first generation you can be simply be referred as American. Everyone else who has other physical characteristics, your family could be here for two three four generations and you're going to be a hyphenated American. If Jenna were of Scottish descent, she would never have to claim any heritage (she could out of choice), but "people of color" can never be just American so she feels probably that she has to claim something. It's a weird position to be in, because for those of us who are very connected to our Latin American heritage the only relatable thing about some "Latinos" is the last name and appearance (sometimes).

I feel many latinos in the industry like Jenna and J-Lo just use their ethnic background as a stepping stool to get more opportunities but if you were to quiz them on anything about Puerto Rican culture, what really happens on the island and not in NYC they would flunk. Sure, their parents gave the the most minimal cultural upbringing and did them a disservice by not teaching them the language but now that they are adults and have the financial means they have no excuse to not learn the language or spend some time in the place learning/experiencing the culture firsthand. I also got comments from other Latinos that my Spanish was not great, or that I spoke too much Spanglish. I worked my butt off to improve my Spanish. At one point I spent over 2 years only watching Spanish television programs at home. I sat in front of the T.V. with a pen and paper and a dictionary writing down all of the words and phrases I did not understand. This was before high speed internet and UA-cam. Sometimes I had to call my mom and ask her what certain words meant. I had notebooks full of notes and I would read them every night. Her mother has STILL refused to learn functional English. This forces my friend to do all of her medical & business affairs from afar. She is in effect her mother's personal translator. I think that is wrong. If she wanted to come here, she should learn to communicate with the people who were already here.

I've been all over Latin America, and there were 2 moments that were quite striking as I was trying to learn the language. The first time you see a person of Asian descent speaking fluent Porteño Spanish in Argentina and, the first time you encounter red-headed Latinas/Latinos. It just shows you how diverse the Latin world really is. Heck, most of the people we regard as Latino in the US, are really Native American at heart...they just happen to have been imbued with Spanish language and culture.

I kind of feel for Jenna Ortega. Her speaking about being insecure about claiming her heritage sounded very sincere and I believe that, had her PR team not pushed her down that road, she would have found a way to deal with it that isn't this dishonest. Obviously, she's an adult so I'm not trying to claim that she isn't responsible for this at all, but to me it seems like this is part of a "brainwashing" trend that can be seen on both extremes of the political spectrum. A lot of today's discourse could be described as "learned outrage". People get upset over nothing. People cry because their identities aren't respected, they cry because other people have identities they don't understand, they cry because there are too few black people in the media, they cry because there are too many, they cry because some women want to be stay at home mums, they cry because some women want careers. It's ridiculous. Most of it could be solved if people just minded their own business. I don't have to stop eating cake because my neighbour doesn't like cake, but I'm also not allowed to force-feed him cake. As easy as that.
And this fake outrage is so ingrained in society now that it creates people like this who aren't allowed to take time to form their own opinions but are forced to adapt aggressive mindsets to the point where they think they're actually theirs.

In my opinion as a Latina (Dominican) language is the biggest player in connecting to my heritage. I mean, the Latino culture is BIG on music which of course, you need to know Spanish to understand. Our foods have names that don’t even have translations. Also, we usually have big united families and having elders around, you need to speak Spanish cause most of them don’t speak English well or don’t even want to. So, language is not everything, you can still enjoy music and food without it, but I believe language is at least 50%.

And as philologist, I can tell you language is vital to understanding a culture. Anya is super Latina not only because she speaks perfect Spanish, but because she’s lived here, she’s immersed into our culture and she proofs it not by giving speeches about representation but about talking about Dulce de leche every time she can, for instance. The thing is, people from the US reduce culture and ethnicity to a skin color and it goes way beyond that, Latam is diverse in phenotypes, we come in every color, but what really unites us as Latinos is our culture. Jenna is estadounidense as it is. It’s about time for US people to accept themselves for where they were born in regardless of a skin color. If you were born and raised in the US that makes you estadounidense. Period. No need to claim any heritage from a place you don’t even know. The US is a diverse country and US people can come, as we Latinos ourselves do, in every color, shape or form.

You will have never gone through the same experiences or the hardships, so why use my experience (that you’ve probably only heard of and don’t have the right perspective on) to make urself famous and advocate for the wrong (usually more lib) fixes? The communism part omg. I hate seeing them talk about how great a concept it is. I actually saw a comment on Twitter the other day calling Castro 🤮 a hero to the cuban people. I’m not going to sit here and pretend I know what Cuba is like to live in. I’m first generation cuban American, I was born in Miami… but I always hear the stories of my family coming to the US and what they went through. Some of them can’t even talk about it 30+ years later.
To those people who have such a desire to live in a communist regime, I say go for it. Move to that country but do not bring that crap here. They’ll learn what it’s actually like and only then will they understand what immigrants of communist countries are talking about. Hearing what my family went through, there is genuine fear in me of ever having to live under a dictatorship. Those people are 100% crazy.

Here no one perceives their nationality through blood because there is a lot of diversity and mixture of different ethnicities. We feel represented by the similarities of the countries, the culture and even the way of thinking and seeing life is different from an American, we feel proud of it and seeing Jenna Ortega in Hollywood supposedly representing it is ironic because she does in the most American way possible that makes us laugh, she wants to represent us. You are not your parents, nor your grandparents, nor should you be responsible for another family member who has a different ethnic origin than yours, nor is it your obligation. My parents come from completely different places from where I am, they grew up in the fields (they are different provinces, which in the USA, would be like states) and I grew up in the city, yes it is a stupid example and it is not like they came from another country, but my point is that they have an origin that does not It has nothing to do with mine because they have a different culture and upbringing than mine and they chose for my life to be somewhere else and that is where my cultural identity was formed. It's definitely the PR team pushing it and also media questioning and editing to highlight it. When she speaks directly about it she expresses how she feels about it, before she gets positioned by those around her. She reminds me of an ex-boyfriend who has parents from Puerto Rico who moved to the mainland US right before he was born and forbid him from learning Spanish because they wanted him to assimilate. He was in his 30s before he finally spent a Summer in PR in a Spanish language immersion program. Until then he was always insecure and embarrassed by the fact that he didn't speak Spanish despite obviously looking Latino and having a Spanish last name.
Ortega is still quite young. Standing up to all the professionals pushing this angle at her, or even addressing the decision her Spanish speaking parents made to not teach her the language as a child, well that might just take a little more maturing before it can be expected of her. Brett, you're so young, maybe you've not yet developed compassion for youth, because you aren't old enough to know just how dumb you youngin's actually are. LOL

From a Latin American perspective, the way "Latino" is used in North America (USA) is curious. It often refers to a nationality or skin color that seems unfamiliar to us. In Latin America, "Latino" denotes the Romance languages spoken in the Americas, such as Spanish, Portuguese, and French. Our primary means of identification is by our state, region, province, or department, depending on the country or nationality. Given these differences, the use of "Latino" in the United States seems perplexing.

En inglés para mis cabros (in english for my guys)
I find it strange that Americans care so much about race and representation. I’m from Chile and I don’t need to see a Mexican in a series to feel represented. In fact, I can feel represented by any character, regardless of their nationality. Not everything is based on race, but also on voice, posture, and experiences. That’s the magic of cinema 👀.
As for “Latino representation,” I think Jena Ortega is exaggerating a bit. However, it seems that in Hollywood, they only care about people’s skin color…the hypocrisy 🐍.

It’s just sick the need of label someone with a race/ethnicity that americans suffer. I’m “white” due german and spaniard heritage, but I was born and raise in southern South America so I identify myself as “latina”. My blood absolutely boiled when i was in the states and had to take a COVID test to went back to my home country, the nurse (an afro american woman) asked my race, and I was like “why is that relevant, wtf… but yeah, I’m latina” then HER RESPONSE WAS “HONEY, YOU’RE ABSOLUTELY WHITE” OMFG, I swear I never hated someone that bad, who did she think she is??? It’s absolutely rude to deny someone’s self perception by their looks! Latinos are mixed af, northern latinos doesn’t look like southern latinos AT ALL, but americans tend to think that we all look mexican 🫠 Argentina, Chile and Uruguay are mostly white due the italian, german, british and spaniard influence, but still latinos! 😤 it’s like stating all americans are white, when americans can look asian, black, latinos, arab, etc, etc, etc.

That’s not only Argentina, Chile and Uruguay most Latin American countries have large white populations with mostly European heritage yet there are stereotypes that we are all mestizo or mulato. I’m a “white” Puerto Rican my kids are blonde with Gray/Blue eyes and Americans AND other Latinos are surprised to know we are fully Puerto Rican.

They don't get that a Latin American can be any skin color and still be a latino, including being white and blonde or Asian, black or native or any other race, we have it all people. But they always put us in this box of who is supposed to be latino and who represents us. It is really odd to see Sofia Vergara on the first season of modern family, looking very tanned and with really dark hair and dark eyes, when she's white. When she started she was blonde you could see that on her early commercial when she was young but in the show she looks like she's somebody else.

There is not a single Latino in there, however it is a show about 6 close friends that go through every life experience imaginable together and its funny af. Plus there's an episode where Jenifer Aniston says like 3 Spanish words. I feel more represented by Jenifer Aniston's Panera Bread Spanish than Jenna Ortega's Taco Bell Spanish 🤣🤣🤣

This is exactly how I feel, and how I think most people in Argentina feel like. The whole Latino representation always seemed weird to me. We just grew up feeling identified with Drake and Josh, Hanna Montana or Lizzie McGuire lol or for example with the wizards of waverly place, they are supposed to be Latinos, yet that gets lost in the translation I guess because they felt like any other Disney channel family.

Yea I noticed that, too. I really enjoy Brett's content and videos but, and I am not holding this against her AT ALL, I believe because of her self-admitted lack of knowledge and familiarity with Spanish and/or hispanic culture, the "I'm too white" when self-deprecatingly declining to attempt pronouncing a Spanish phrase was jarring and the only time I have felt a little second-hand cringe watching her videos. She actually looks more "hispanic" than most of the White hispanic fluent-spanish speakers here in Coral Gables, Florida. If I saw her on the street, I would assume she was another white Cuban girl who speaks fluent Spanish with her grandparents 😄 Not something I care too much about but yea it seems North Americans are the only people in the world who haven't learned yet hispanic is an ETHNICITY, not a race 😅😅

I am from Argentina, the country where Anya lived in her childhood, and ours is a multicultural country, only 20 years ago the term "Latino" began to be used massively here due to the influence of the Internet, but until the 90's for an Argentine there was not much difference between foreigners from countries like Mexico, France, or Poland. Beyond the language, everyone was foreign to us, and at the same time we could relate to everyone. Argentina, in addition to Italian and Spanish immigration, at the beginning of 1900 received many Polish, Germans, Italians, French and several other nationalities, you can see it for example in the last name of former president Kirchner, the soccer player Alexis MacAllister.
Saying "I'm too white for..." implies that all Latinos should look brown like Mexicans, but in fact, Latino culture comes from Europe, and there are tons of Latino people with white skin. What is called "Latino" in the USA, is actually a mixed race of indigenous people.

As someone from the Cajun French heritage, I can definitely say that speaking Cajun French is something that was totally discouraged for my grandparents, and so future generations rarely were able to speak or understand the language. It was definitely something that was discouraged, as they were told only to speak English. I wish I was able to know Cajun French, especially since it's close to being a dead language now. But I can definitely say that I always had pride in my heritage because it's me, it's where I come from, and it has shaped me in so many ways
