    Wow Doc that was very helpful and challenging as a leader in the Body of Christ. Reminder that there are no bad questions, just the ones that didn't get asked or answered with God's truth and love.

    and how does the source criticism helps understand the synoptic problem?

    • @askabibleprof7099
      @askabibleprof7099  Рік тому

      Source Criticism tries to determine what may be the original sources that the Gospel authors used as they composed the respective Gospels. For example, in order to include genealogies in their Gospels, both Matthew and Luke had to rely upon existing known family genealogies. In other words, then didn’t just make up the genealogies found in their Gospels. And since church history documents that Mark’s Gospel was based solely upon the memories of the apostle Peter (Mark being his disciple), scholars concluded that the common material found in both Mark and Luke means that Luke used Mark’s Gospel as a major “source” as he wrote the Gospel of Luke. The Synoptic Problem or Question tries to answer the question of which Gospel was written first and did any following Gospel authors rely upon it. Does that answer your question?

    Thanks for your insight on the “Synoptic Problem” or more appropriately, the “Synoptic Question.” I was thinking about the very same thing regarding plagiarism that you briefly talked about. You said that it was not an issue in ancient times mainly because plagiarism is a modern issue associated with copyright laws (which they did not have back then), and when an author uses material from another author, it showed that he was educated in the topic and was a common practice among educated authors or writers in the past. Without having researched it enough, I thought of other likely possibilities and explanations regarding the Synoptic Question. For example, in addition to what you said, I thought that oral transmission (and by that, I mean the culture and practice of being able to quote and/or remember to a great degree many of the teachings of Jesus and the Apostles through the agency of speaking and hearing over and over the same teachings among the believers) was the common medium in the early years of the church to learn about Jesus and his teachings. That means that by the time the Gospel authors (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) wrote their Gospels, each of them was already familiar with many of the teachings of Jesus they received through the same medium (above) with each writing independently according to his own particular purpose, time, need, ministry, and recipients without necessarily depending on the other author(s), but with the common knowledge about many of Jesus’ teachings and details about his life which explains the similarity in the Synoptic Gospels.

      Right, and as we have discussed, while there was an oral period of the first century church, that does not dismiss the evidence found within the Gospels themselves of some degree of literary interdependence. Some believe this "perceived" evidence as having little weight, and they hold to a "Literary Independence" view. That view, however, is a minority position that is not held be many Gospel scholars, whether they be Evangelical or Secular. That being said, both Matthew and John would have depended upon their own eyewitness memories as they composed their Gospels, while Mark and Luke relied directly upon their associates who were also eyewitnesses and disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ. Good to interact with you.

    Is it just me, or did this pastor just tell us not to be afraid of the Synoptic Problem, and then not tell us anything about the Synoptic Problem? I mean, if you're going to talk about the problem, and not say the words, Markan priority, Matthean priority, Two-Source Hypothesis...I thought I was going to learn something here.

      I appreciate the interaction. Please understand the purpose of the video was not to provide a most likely solution to the Synoptic Question, but to explain why this topic is really not a "problem." It is merely an introduction to the topic. Generally speaking, UA-camrs wont even listen to a video for more than 5 minutes, and UA-cam only allows non-monetized creators to post videos that are under 15 minutes. So this limits us as to what we can accomplish in a single video. Consequently, we try to make these videos both thorough and focused but also concise. Maybe in the future we will post videos on the "most viable" solutions that have been proposed as answering the Synoptic Question. Thank you for your suggestion, and we regret that the video didn't meet your expectation.

    Look at the book. - The Four Gospels at a Glance - You will be amazed. Simple, understandeble, with a good overview. The synoptic problem has been eliminated. The author has managed to bring all four Gospels together in parallel. The books are accepted at many universities.

      I appreciate the interaction, but I looked for the book you mentioned, and there are no current books by that title. The only one I could find was by Douay and Rheims, and it is over a 100 years old. There has been considerable research conducted by scholarship since then. Are you certain that is the title of the book you suggested?

      @@askabibleprof7099 Hi. The name of the book - '' The Four Gospels at a Glance '' has various Bible translations. 1.World English Bible 2.American Standard Version (Asv) and 3.Douay-Rheims 1899 American Edition. These are all old public domain translations. I guess that's why the author took it. Otherwise he would need the rights to do so. The style, the composition of the 4 Gospels amazes the readers. I can only recommend reading

    Monte Shanks was one of my favorite seminary professors. Super bright, well-read, and puts tremendous effort into his classes. When he speaks about Scripture, you're more educated when he's done. Interestingly (and if you listen carefully), some of his views seem Mennonite or Anabaptist or Reformed (which I like). If you're serious about the subject matter and want a challenge, he is an excellent choice.

    His comments on plagiarism in the ancient world are simply wrong. Bart Ehrman, in his book, "Forgery and Counterforgery: The Use of Literary Deceit in Early Christian Polemics" clearly proves that the Ancients were aware of plagiarism and roundly condemned its practice.

    • @askabibleprof7099
      @askabibleprof7099  3 роки тому

      I appreciate that you took the time to view the video. However, I'm not sure you understand precisely what I said. I said that at times ancient authors, whether non-Christian or Christian, referred to previous authors that they cited, while other times they simply embedded into their works materials from previous authors without referring to them at all. The point was that there were not copyright laws in ancient times, and ancient authors often employed materials from others. One only needs to compare Josephus and other Roman historians with one another to verify this fact. If you haven't done this for yourself, then I recommend that you not take Ehrman seriously when it comes to being forthright about the facts. The reality is that at times Ehrman disagrees with Ehrman. One only needs to read all of his works to see how often he undermines his own previously publicized positions.

      @@askabibleprof7099 again I apologize for my rudeness. I was simply hoping for a deeper treatment of the Synoptic problems potential solutions. I am a Farrerite myself, but find the issue really fascinating. I think I am just not your target audience, as I am unconcerned with theological issues like inerrancy, but read guys like Percy Gardener Smith for fun.
      I was also having a very bad day, and I think I made my comment as an outlet for my unrelated frustration. I hope you and yours are staying safe in these trying times.

      @@neilzientek I understand completely. This channel is a rather new endeavor, and we have only begun to create content. Others have also suggested focusing on specific alternate solutions to the Synoptic Question. Hopefully they will become a reality. This channel started as providing introductory explanations on subjects, topics, or issues that students are unfamiliar with but want to get a grasp of the basics. I try to be a nice guy, but I'm not as successful as I want to be. lol. So we are all ears if there is a specific question/issue you would like to Farrerite over. Just know that it can't be very complex, UA-cam only allows non-monetized creators to post videos that are no longer than 15 minutes. Our earlier videos are not that polished, but we are getting better. Thanks and blessings.
