Johnathan Sarfati has a commentary book on Genesis. There are a lot of prophecies in the OT about a day of judgement that happened in Maccabees, and also about the day of judgement 70 AD.

I have been researching all of these: (NIV application set, NICOT/NICNT set, Believers Bible commentary, word biblical commentary set, The Bible Knowledge commentary OT & NT, Baker Exegetical set, The New American commentary, & the IVP Bible Background OT & NT commentary to name a few). Just wanting some direction on ones out of these that you may recommend for the layperson? I don't have any of the commentaries you have mentioned. So my ability to comment of them is very limited. What I do know is that they are very dated. That's not to say they don't have value or any good insights. Nevertheless, I personally try to use more current commentaries. I do this simply because so much has been learned and discovered since the late 18th century. So if you have any of these, then good, but I would start to incrementally supplement your library with more current commentaries. Hope that helps.

Gill is a hyper cal and Spurgeon admits that while Clarke is your Arminian defender and his opinion on the serpent is amusing while Barnes is hard to find I think but ok. I bit the bullet and bought Logos 8 Bible software. Logos 8 is pricey but worth it if you can swing it. I can pick and chose which commentaries I want, buy particular commentary series, and make inter-commentator comparisons at deep discounts to print copies. Logos 8 has been a total game-changer to my biblical studies...I'll never go back to print copies. Yes, there is an extensive array of lousy commentaries about forwarding liberal, progressive, and just plain heretical pseudo-doctrines angling for a popular audience. I tend to compare different expositors to piece together what makes expositional, theological, contextual, and systematic sense on passages. I like Moo, Block, Bruce, Walvoord, Zuck, and a couple others. The only "evangelical preacher" commentary series I'd heartily recommend is John MacArthur's...but the cost here is upward of $600.00 (buy a book or two at a time and grow your library). MacArthur is also worth it you're a died-in-the wool Calvinist-leaning type (like me). Your advice here is fantastic for serious Bible students...particularly your admonition about commentaries offering "exegetical comments" that range from simply incorrect to off-the-rails bizarre.
James; right, electronic commentaries can be found at a considerable savings. The problem for me is that as you know, I'm at a computer looking at a screen all the time. Consequently, I prefer hard print because it gives my eyes a break, and I can read them even if there is a power outage. Some times I just need to get away from my desk.

I suspect that one will be available in about a month, right now I am in a heavy grading period, so my time is very limited. Is there a specific point in the video that you wish to challenge? Lastly, I never suggest that my students "not" read positions that they disagree with, but only that they also read scholars that provide arguments from the biblical text revealing why some positions are poorly defended and contrary to the evidence.

The commentary that recognizes the book of Genesis and other "history" books of the Old Testament are myths and that many of the stories in these books are based on mythologies from the ancient Near East is a good scholar. I would gladly buy that scholar's commentary. Recommended Reading: "Ancient Near Eastern Thought & the Old Testament" by John H. Walton

@@askabibleprof7099 "Catastrophic flaws"? Dr Walton is a highly respected Old Testament scholar and doesn't make any "conclusions" or "assumptions" in that book. If you've read it, you'll recall that he stated in the introduction that he's not trying to convince you that the Old Testament is based on myths, but is just laying out the facts and letting you decide for yourself. No assumptions, no conclusions. EDIT: I'll refute the video you recommended either tomorrow or this weekend.
@@txfreethinker Again, thanks for watching. That may be what Dr. Walton implies in his book, but he has gone on record, stating that the OT contains pagan mythology. He's embraced the same flawed biases and presuppositions of modern secular and liberal scholars who have failed to understand (or maybe respect is a better concept) the corrective nature of the OT. For example, many ancient pagan religions and cultures have an "ark" story/mythological event. However, the OT provides the corrective narrative and historical documentation of that event. Just because the OT documents the event does not demand that embedding pagan mythology in order to communicate something about the "God of Israel." That Dr. Walton academic accomplishments deserve respect is recognized; nevertheless, one can appreciate his scholarship and still reject some of his conclusions.
I tend to avoid Bibles that have pastoral commentaries inside of them. No matter how good the pastor is it often seemed to me to smack of some real pride to your own thoughts inside the very Bible. I see this as different from text critical notes or small comments on items but the Dr. So and So NIV commentary was always a bit braggadocios for me.
I'm sorry that I some how missed your comment. But I pretty much agree with you concerning "study" Bibles. Some of them contain outright inaccuracies and/or uncritical notes. Most I know of don't even provide the author(s) of these "commentary notes." Don't get me wrong, some are helpful, but I still would like to know who wrote them. It would not surprise me to learn that some were written simply be friends of some editor(s), and that they were simply plagiarized from other sources. Who really knows where they come from.

I see this as different from text critical notes or small comments on items but the Dr. So and So NIV commentary was always a bit braggadocios for me.
I'm sorry that I some how missed your comment. But I pretty much agree with you concerning "study" Bibles. Some of them contain outright inaccuracies and/or uncritical notes. Most I know of don't even provide the author(s) of these "commentary notes." Don't get me wrong, some are helpful, but I still would like to know who wrote them. It would not surprise me to learn that some were written simply be friends of some editor(s), and that they were simply plagiarized from other sources. Who really knows where they come from.
