    Full ROM, strengthening the muscles around the knee, and screw your feet into the ground when squatting...keeps your knees from caving in...I have chodromalacia in both knees and squatting every day, not heavy, sometimes bar only, but 100 reps, keeps the pain away.

    Buddy, this may be the one specific aspect of "fitness" where my knowledge nearly equals yours (but I got 2 more years of school) and this video had me pumping my fist. Spot on, dude. The bit about quad dominance comes up over and over too. Overwork your quads and you get patellar tendonitis. Chest stronger than back gets you kyphotic posture (and pain). Overworked hip flexors gets you lordotic posture (and pain). Great video.

    The correct way to do a hip circle walk is with hands pointing up, elbows at 90 degrees at about shoulder width while making your hands into pincers. Opening and closing them while saying "Hooray for Zoidberg" gets bonus points.

    Thanks so much for making this video bro. Had trouble with sharp pain in my knees when squatting/split squatting/lunges. The crab walk banded side step exercise has really helped as well as correct foot/knee placement when doing the exercises. Today I squatted heavy with absolutely zero knee pain. Thank you so much bro 🙏

    When I'm at the gym I do notice more people's walking styles and I do notice people walking like penguins. I immediately start wondering what muscles are either too weak or too tight in their bodies.
    I never thought 'well, their knees (or ankles or hips) are going to feel that at some point in their lives'. This is a great post because it helps me connect the dots in health and fitness.
    Excellent post as always Brian!

    Good advice. I'll add in my knee pain tips, all of them well known. Improve ankle mobility, specifically get the calve loosened up. I sit way too much at my job and my ankles and calves get tight. Getting them loosened up before squatting improves the ability of knees to travel forward. Tight calves and ankles can really restrict knee movement causing pain. And learn to squat in a way that ensures the hips are strong enough to keep the knees in place. Knees out is good. I had and have knee valgus or unstable knees when squatting. When it happened and happens, I focus on building the hip and hamstring strength to stabilize the knees. Your body will start doing strange things with your hips and hamstrings when under heavy load to leverage the body to lockout. I find weak hips seem to cause my knees to shift in to get other muscles into the movement.This happens mainly on the right side, which unilateral work seems to help. Assessing the specific reason for your knee pain is one of the most important factors to getting rid of it.

    Warming up with the bike, and consciously thinking about tracking my knees over my toes helps a ton before I squat. Since your feet are locked in place, they wont turn out when you push your knee out. It is one of the most beneficial ways to keep healthy knees. Id recommend 5 mins on moderate intensity to get the blood really flowing. And remember to keep thinking about your knees tracking over your toes on every pedal.

    Externally rotated tibias here, and the struggle is real. It's a lot of focusing on the knee in relation to where your foot would be instead of where it is, and being prepared to look goofy. Real goofy, but safe and pain free. It definitely makes lunges difficult mechanically (balance vs knee alignment) even at body weight but I'm kinda stubborn and refuse to give up on them. Anyways, thanks for all the great info Brian!

    A lot of good info but the thing that stood out the most was about getting xrays, mri's, etc and then you can help. I've trained people the same way, saying "hey, I can help strengthen and stretch but until you get a full exam of what it is, I can't fix it/help it." We have a trainer now that I'm surprised hasn't gotten in more trouble. He openly tells people "I fix shoulders, hips, etc so train with me." Not a doctor, not a pt, just a trainer.

    Wearing shoes all the time from when we are growing up really messes up people's walking step. Shoes make you tend to strike heel first which transmits the energy straight up your calcaneus through your tibia to your knee etc. Instead try landing mid foot on your metatarsal area so your Achilles tendon and calf absorb the energy instead of the structural bone. (Guess what if your calf is absorbing the energy of 10,000+ steps a day they grow...)

    This is one thing that puts people ahead of the curve when it comes to pain in any joint, check the surrounding muscles and see if they're tight. Most people look at the source directly instead of what's around. My shoulder was irritated but I knew it was due to lat, forearm, pec, or bicep tightness. Same with my knee, hips? Quads? Hammies? Again, this is mostly applied to musculature, not as useful if you've damaged connective tissue, but may relieve a little pain if needed.

    Ingraining good reps is insanely important. Eventually you hit a point in your training where a bad rep usually means no lift (or injury.) It's easy to brute force your way through a 135lb squat, but if you're trying to move 600lbs, it's not going unless you know what you're doing.

    Getting in my late thirties now. Having a good pair of knees and legs in general becomes a very essential part the older you get i suppose and right now my knees are not a problem. The pain usually goes away when I pop the caps back in place. Last two weeks I did football (soccer) and my right achilles tendon prolly got too hammered. Left one is fine but thats because the nature of my martial art needs all your body weight on the left leg and the tendon is much stronger. Im giving it time. It doesnt bother me much when walking but going down stairs is kind of difficult. Anyways. Always see a doctor. Never do it like me. Excellent advice near the end. Fixing your posture and gait is really really important long term in your life and doing your best form at the gym seems like a natural continuation of that.

  • @zynthos9
    @zynthos9 6 років тому +3

    Nothing wrong with duck footed walking. Some people are just naturally duck footed based on their hip structure. You squat with your toes pointed out right?

    • @japphan
      @japphan 6 років тому +2

      Some people are naturally that way, that is correct, but even so, you cannot compare a squat with a walking step. The forward momentum while walking will create strain on the inside of your knee, (and conversely, on the outside of you are walking with your toes inward.) It is the forward momentum in the stretched knee position that is the problem, which you do not have in a squat.
      Now, if you are naturally duck footed, you can walk _less_ duck footedly. And also, some people think they are naturally duck footed, when they actually have a flexibility problem, most likely in their ilotibial band (outside thigh), which in itself can cause knee problems.

    • @zynthos9
      @zynthos9 6 років тому +1

      Ok I get what you are saying in that it is not right to compare walking step with squat. But for someone with 'retroverted hips' www.hss.edu/condition-list_hip-femoral-retroversion.asp I would think that trying to force their knees straight would cause more stress as it's out of alignment with where their body wants to naturally point? I suppose such a person should walk in a zig-zag pattern so their forward momentum always follows the direction of their toes?

    • @japphan
      @japphan 6 років тому

      I think you have an important point. Forcing your toes inward would indeed be bad for your hips in the same way walking with your toes outward can be bad for your knees, and maybe worse for your body overall.
      (By trying it out, walking with my feet inwards I experience more discomfort in my hips than I do in my knees while pointing my toes outward, which could be an indicator.)
      I get the zig-zag approach, but it seems a bit impractical, but if I had the condition and severe enough pain, I would try it, for sure. Looking a tad bit silly is a small price for healthy knees/hips.
      I guess the best approach when you have this condition would be to strengthen both your knees and your hips. Pause squats come to mind.

    I have flat feet, so my knees cave in on unilateral leg work unless I let my arch collapse. Any advice?

      If the bone structure grew incorrectly from the problem this wont help, but think about the tripod foot during your exercises. If your feet turn out as well, Foam roll the IT band and calves, especially the outside of calves(peronials). Also try butterfly sits for the inside of thighs. A good glute activation exercise before you squat would also be a plyoball hamstring curl. it will help you stablize and hold your knees out better in the squat.

    As you get older you get used to pain. You pretty much don't even notice it. I had 5 knee sureries from 30-40. Was a rough stretch. Been back at the gym a couple years now just pushing through it. Funny story. I broke my foot Wednesday and didn't know. I went to the gym Thursday and thought hmm, that's a new pain. Got an x ray yesterday. Yup it's broke. I still went to the gym today.

    Cut off your knees. That is the only surefire way to eliminate the pain. Praise Jebus
