I Took a Picture of the GREEN COMET Not Seen in 50,000 Years!

This "green comet" is rare because it hasn't been seen since the stone age! Its orbit around the sun is so massive, that it will be another 50,000 years before it returns again. (So maybe take a look while you can).
Currently, it is not visible to the naked eye in the night sky, so use a pair of binoculars, or a telescope to see it. Use a stargazing app on your smartphone to locate the comet, and point your telescope in that direction. (You SHOULD be able to find it!)

Thank you to everyone that submitted their comet images - I am sorry that I could not share them all! (They're all better than mine) :D

I’ve been out multiple nights with binoculars but I still haven’t found it. It’s amazing how people are making such amazing photos of it!
Try using a app the shows you the night sky it might help you find it easier
Should be quite easy to find if good sky and no (or little) moon.
Me too, very hard to find. Bortle 8 backyard with binocs and apps, but couldn’t find it.
Had a quick go as well, couldnt see it. Well, i might have but couldnt say it was the comet or not :P Manage to capture with both cellphone and dslr/kitlens tho.
Same! Finally got cloudless nights. Using apps and media for location and still no dice. Super dissapointed.
This man is the sole reason that I got into astrophotography. I've just started with a dslr and tripod and have gotten some great photos. Thank you Trevor.
Thank you! That means a lot

The comet name is C/2022 E3 ZTF. Each letter holds a significant meaning. C representing it to be a non-periodic comet. Е3 represents the month it was discovered, which is March. 2022 represents the year of discovery and ZTF is the observatory that observed it.
Comments aren't always full of inane cack. I learned something interesting. Ty
Learned smthng new ty
this is what Elon Musk is gonna name his next kid
I have tried so hard to see this thing but my weather has been clouds and snow every night. Thanks for this experience, Trevor
@@FUNNYMEMECHANNEL123 me too! I never get to see things that are around due to clouds or it is not viewable in my area. Sad
Yeah, for me, nothing but clouds and rain here.
I had clear wheather but no telescope poor me😭
Love the touch of emotions in this video. Including other astrophotographers at the end is very nice. I like that you maintain the backyard feel of the equipments, not going far away from average backyard hobbyists
Thanks!!! My weather here has shut down any attempts to see this thing. Again, thank you!!!!
Yeah same 🫤It was completely cloudy for me
Same why does this always happen
My case was pretty different I didn't even noticed there was a building in the direction of the comet

Same man except for tonight (hopefully) let’s all have a quiet minute for the people who missed this😔
Nice one Trevor, knew you'd grab this one. It is moving at one heck of a rate against the stars. The green comes from Dicarbon, two carbon atoms stuck together; the green wavelength light is emitted as they are split apart by the sun. I believe the Dicarbon is formed from organic material and by solar action as the comet gets closer to the Sun. Great inspiring video as ever and I've not managed to see it with binoculars either, it is quite faint.
I would also add one thing to your very interesting post: the comet is only 1 kilometer in size vs Hale-Bopp which was I believe 38 kilometers in size. I watched Hale-Bopp over multiple nights, it was totally spectacular! Btw, using my Pentax 20x60 binoculars I could not see C3 either. However I have photographed it. Clear sky’s everybody!
When it comes to astronomy, you’re my favorite content creator. You make it seem very accessible and interesting. And you have great production quality. I appreciate the time and effort that goes into filming and editing each video. Thank you so much.
Hi Astrobackyard, yours is the best description of ZTF comet information, technique and images. Many thanks from UK.
I'm so happy that YOU managed to capture this one in the life type of comet ☄️❤️
I tried yesterday here in the Balkans, in Serbia....but clouds didn't move the whole night unfortunately. My girlfriend and I traveled 300km to a remote place in the heart of my country but unfortunately didn't capture anything...will continue the hunt though ❤️🤞🏼 Best of luck to everyone trying to photograph this amazing comet❤️
Give up now its 🛸 👽
Thank you Trevor for inspiring me to stay up late at night photographing this beautiful universe. All thanks to you I have found my passion, and found my true love for space. Thank you
It is my pleasure - we are cut from the same cloth! Clear skies
Thanks for that Trevor, you have motivated me to give it a go. Minus 11 and the other side of midnight I do admire your dedication - have you not got a permeant observatory yet? Did I not see you using an dome in one of your videos. Respect to anybody who can go through setting up and breaking down their rig each night. Thanks again for the video.
As everytime, amazing content and amazing shot. Thanks Trevor for pushing the astrophotography to what it is now!
Trevor, you are the one who made me have some interest in astrophotography! Thank you for it, and I love you videos so much 🔭🌌
Thank you, thank you and other photographers of the skies for capturing this rare event! Much appreciated! Thank you for sharing!🌠
I've been watching it where I live in Northern California with a 5" Newtonian, it's been about as bright as the Andromeda Galaxy appears, just a smudge in the sky. I've got way too much light pollution to see a tail, it was my first comet that I've observed so I was still excited! Thanks for the video!
I really liked this video, including your philosophical comments relating to comets' brief visits and nothing lasts forever. Nice your wife got up to see it. I just wish she had the joy of sweeping it up in binoculars like comet hunters have done for years. Thank you.
Spectacular. The weather was not really allowing me to see anything, so I'm glad you were able to capture it :)
Thank you, Tim!
Been following you for a while, and followed your recommendations for a starter kit, the star adventurer 2i and Canon rebel t7, I managed to get a rather mediocre shot of the comet, as I only had about 15 minutes of a window to do so, but it's my picture of something we will never see again, and I'm happy you put the spark in me to do it
Thanks, 3vor for the amazing pictures.
Trevor! This is such a great video, love the way you broke down the comet for the public and debunked some of the claims floating around in the media about it, because some of them are truly wild. The night footage shots look amazing, great work with those! And of course, awesome job with the final image. Did you get the ASIAIR to guide on the comet head?
Enjoyable video as always. Looks like you've got the perfect pad to shoot from now. Couldn't be more happier for you! I notice that it's very cold where you are. One of my concerns about astrophotography is the cold and my camera kit, especially when it costs so much. I was wondering if you're considering making a video about maintaining your kit, protecting it after a long shoot in humid and cold climates?
Absolutely stunning! Sadly is was cloudy here so I couldn't find it :(
Keep up the good work Trevor!
Darn, you're one hell of a lucky guy. I got prepped up yesterday but clouds and the weather decided to cross my plans...snowy weather for the next few days here in Europe =(
Nicely done Trevor!! Don't fret Ashley, I couldn't find it visually either lol
Nice shot 😍
I’m getting frustrated with the processing on this one, my first comet 🍒💥
How lucky you are to have a partner who appreciates your hobby, a lot of us out here have partners who just don’t get it.
Keep on inspiring, thank you 🙏🏼
Awesome video! Informative, interesting, dramatic, easy to understand! Thanks so much! 💐
Such amazing pics. I was so excited to see the green comet. Didn't get the chance to hunt for the comet..but thanks for the sharing your pic's to the world
Brilliant Trevor again thanks - food for thought 🙂 what great images from yourself and others you featured. I'll be out again soon as I can before the " green" comet disappears, it's brighter than it was at the moment but imagine it will fade fast . Thanks again
Awesome work, Trevor!
Awesome video! I was glad I found ZTF with a pair of binoculars although at first I thought it was a smudge in my lens.
Great video Trevor! 👍
Beautiful images, Well Done!!! My Mum and Dad woke my sister and I up to go out and see the magnificent Bennett Comet in 1969! It started my love of astronomy and astro-photography - particularly comets! I will never forget it, it is imprinted in my brain for life!!
I knew you would get it, I was waiting for this video, You never fail.
Such a great passion. Every second of it is amazing. Thank you so much. I really like your videos.
Loved this video!!
Great shots. Thank you for sharing 👍
I love his work, very inspiring. This channel helped through pandemic years ❤
She's not alone in not seeing it. After many random shots with a camera and different lenses, I finally found a tiny roundish smudge in a couple shots. Awesome work Trevor👍👍
Great work Trevor👍 You’ve inspired me to get out there and give it a go! But then you inspired me to get into astrophotography in the first place, can’t thank you enough, I’ve made a lot of friends in this awesome hobby of ours and it’s all down to you😀 Thanks and clear skies!
Simon’s Astro on UA-cam
🤣
Thank you for capturing these magnificent images of “the green comet”. I wanted to go to the local observatory the night it was passing by but the weather was bad and visitors later reported that they couldn’t see it because it was so overcast. Seeing it firsthand must’ve been awesome. Cute doggo, btw.
I really enjoy this video well put together 👍
Thank you Trevor for the image.Outstanding!
Nice Trevor I've been waiting to see if you caught it. Thanks I spotted it 3 nights ago with binoc's then set up my Maksutov Cat. scope and took a better look.
Usually watch the full video because I love learning from your experiences, BUT I was so excited to see your shots I fast-forwarded to the exposure shots. 😅 Will come back to watch in full. Thank you for the video!🤍💚
Thanks man !!!! much love from New Zealand
Thank you for sharing. My binoculars did not have the same focus as your setup. I appreciate your time outside in the frozen tundra to capture something that will never be seen in our life time again. THE GREEN COMET was 🔥
Thank you for the fantastic images.
Hope you continue to have clear skys !!! 😉😉😉
Nice ending! The Colorization is Beautiful! Love the Music background also at the end..... And the Telecaster sound. I have one!!! Nice!
Thanks, amazing photos ! Unfortunately this days are very cloudy where I live. But Thanks again to sharing that with us.
I was blown away watching the international space station fly past for the first time. Since then I've seen it many times here in the UK and every time it's really exciting! No telescope required - you can see it clearly with the naked eye if there are no clouds to obscure the view.
Great video and gorgeous images 🎉 I had to laugh about you getting your wife out in the wee smalls to share the comet. Similar dynamic for me dragging my husband out to see things. But I remember going out to look at the night sky with to my dad when I was little and the sense of joy and wonder has never left me. Thanks for sharing this!
Thanks for the great shots of this comet ☄️. I live twenty miles west of Tampa Florida I have not been able to see this with binoculars. The last comment I was able to see in the sky was Hale-Bopp comet when I lived in north central California. That was like in 1997? Keep up the great work! 👍
Another great video. Nice shots by everyone!
Congrats on such good pics the comet is beautiful. Thank you for sharing with us.
Dude excellent job. And Thank You for sharing for sure...
Trevor’s videos got me into astrophotography. I was sitting with my 12” dobsonian one day after watching his videos for about two years now thinking I could never do astrophotography and just decided to get a dslr. Its been 1 month and my images are already improving! Thank you so much Trevor.
Nice job Trevor! We'll hopefully get a chance Down Under to capture it around the 10th Feb, but it is getting further away, so may not be too spectacular. By the way, your Orion was inside down ;)
Fingers crossed!
Thank you for sharing this with us,I went out that night but it was cloudy.
Couldn't find it the first night... Cloudy tonight. But your video and the way you describe the comets means so much to me. I don't think my people around me understand the significance of it. And us as humans. 🌠 So glad I found your video.
Love it! Great background on the comet itself. Thanks for including my image Trevor. Clear Skies. ✨
i live in massachusetts about 30+ miles west of boston and have looked for it the last few nights but no luck yet. i'll try bincocs tonight but it's below zero F. thanks for taking the picture and sharing it.
I love the fact that Trevor and I get the same weather patterns. I was out imaging as well and I was thinking I bet a new Astrobackyard coming. This winter sucked by the way!
Great video!! Good job!!
I don’t know where you are in Ontario but we have had cloud cover every night since November. Nice work on getting a shot!!
Awesome image Trevor! 1st image I've seen with a tail
Well done. It's been cloudy here in Rochester NY for months. Had a break in the clouds last night. Go figure, moon at 85%. No luck seeing it with binoculars.
I live in Quebec near Montreal and I wanted to look outside last night... but with -28 degrees C and some snowflakes falling, I was quite disappointed! But so happy to find your video here, at least I will have seen it ''virtually''. Somehow, I felt emotional when you showed your gf about the comet but she didn't see it. This phenomena is not like a moon eclipse; you miss it, you can still see one in a few months or so. But this comet? Rare thing, it is!
Thanks for the work man. I couldn't see the comet with binoculars myself but the picture you've taken turned out really good.
Thank you!!
Fully agree!!
I got a descent shot of it about a week ago. I used a C-11 with Hyperstar and an ASI294MC camera. I stacked (10) 60 second subs, no darks or flats....it was pretty low in the sky at the time, we were lucky to catch it in Arizona. Clear Skies!
Amazing shooting... congrats!
It is super hard to find with binos, but my local Astronomy Society pinpointed it so we could all see it in their 18 inch Schmidt Cassegrain! Thank you Westport Astronomical Society, and thank you Astrobackyard for sharing your adventure with us!
Thanks for this😉
Sweet! I found that DSS did a good job. I stacked like normal which gave me just the stars and I removed the faint blur from the comet. Then I did another stack tracking the comet only and removed the star trails. I refined both tif’s then combined. Worked out nice! I posted my result on your thread as CryptoKnight. I know I did get tail data and will try again to reveal it better in a new final image later
Excellent captures thanks for sharing❤️
I was looking for the constilation and I recognize the dipper. The day before dawn I pretty sure I have seen it. The weather hasn't been too cooperative but it's nice to have a look at what you captured. Thanks.
Hi @AstroBackyard what telescope do you use mostly? just wanted to know.. btw great video😎
Your BACK !
UA-cam hasn't presented me your videos in months!
All right was wondering when you were gonna drop the video, and here we are.
Man, that one at 8:06 is incredible. They all are actually. Awesome work!
Amazing image. I also photographed it before it was cloudy on the day of its closest approach to Earth. Thanks for the video.
Great job getting pictures 👍
Thank you so much, those pics are bad ass dude!🥰
Another great video as always. So quick question - Bias frames, does they only apply to DSLR cameras or does it also apply to specific dedicated telescope cameras e.g. like the one you use in this video.
Excellent Information, and Amazing Photography. Thank You.
Thanks for this! I live in a highly lit place and I could not share this with my kids. You rock!! 😁🙌
Wow! Pics are amazing!
Amazing bro love your video ❤️
Thanks for showing my picture Trevor, I used the Radian 61 Telescope to capture it
It was suggested to me, try exposure of around 30 seconds with a fairly high gain/iso
I was a bit sad since most of last month was full of clouds but im still happy to see other peoples pictures of the comet. Great Work capturing it!!
Thanku for sharing such beautiful pictures of comet.
I had the privilege to see this comet for myself.. It's an amazing experience.
Great vid champ...greetings from Argentina...!!
Love this, my brother and I had an 8 inch telescope when we were young... hes passed now, but I still have the memories of freezing I the nighttime to see amazing things 🙏🏻
That is great video very well presented and produced - hoping to see it tonight in NZ and maybe snap it with my 135mm lens!
I braved the 38F cold here in SoCal with my Nexstar 5SE with reducer, Red-dot finder, and a ZWO ASI224MC. Holycow that was a hard one to get in frame. Couldn't get the planetary camera to pull in the tail so just made an animation. Still a good learning experience. Hats off to you Trevor. Great pics! err best keep that hat on.. it's cold!
I so enjoy how you explain the why beautiful pictures
Great video, thanks! But just to comfort your wife: Although I knew exactly where it was I never saw it through my binoculars too. But I never took the time to get my eyes really adjusted to the night since I was going in and out while taking the pictures from the balcony of the hotel in the ski resort in Tirol Austria we are at right know ⛷ ☃❄. But I caught it in camera, with my dslr, a tripod and the stock 70-300 lens at about 250mm, loved it! Now it's snowing, that's fine for a winter vacation too 😅.
Edit: Thanks to your video a re-did the stacking, I hadn't thought of it's fast movement 🙈 ... and I really like it! 45 pictures, no dbf-frames, but I'm really happy - and reading other comments I got really lucky to even have gotten a chance 🤩!
Not alot of snow. Here in southwestern lower Michigan we have zero snow on the ground. Great video. What time of night was this?
Amazing storytelling, especially the wife ending! Great shoots !
That was nice, thanks!
