She also has the most direct introduction in the series. Every other sibling of the Endless be they Destiny, Delirium or Dream himself, they each have a two to three paragraph description....until hers.
      And then there was Death.

I don't fear death personally. The one thing that worries me a bit is how I'm going to die. But then it is probably the most common human trait: fear of the unknown.

I appreciate that your a games channel, so i won't complain that Discworld death didn't get a bigger segment, but my GOD he is my favorite representation ever. He's a man with a job, who tries to care about his work and the people he interacts with, often doesn't understand, but is happy to listen (it's explicitly stated in one book that over the years, Death has learned to just let people vent at first, until they realise the state they are in, e.g. dead.). But he's also his own person, with desires, likes and dislikes, quirks and hobbies. And he named his horse Binky :P

You should check out a book by Piers Anthony called On A Pale Horse! It has a similar theme of Death being a person that has a title. It's part of the Incarnations of Immortality series. You don't have to read all the books, but they are interconnected stories. Luckily, On A Pale Horse is the first book in the series.

I love the Underwhere (and by extension the Overthere) from Super Paper Mario. It's where you go when you run out of lives, when your "game has ended", aka World -1.
It's not the most original in terms of what you can find there (the River Twygz, with Charold the ferryman, Queen Jaydes ruling the Underwhere, etc.)
But I do love the visual design, the atmosphere, Queen Jaydes has a great design, the way you get there is great and the story with Jaydes' and Grambi's daughter is really touching.
The Overthere is pretty much just heaven. Clouds everywhere, angel-like people, the ruler looks like a stereotypical God, it has forbidden fruit, a devil creature you have to fight, etc.)
Ascending from the Underwhere to the Overthere is like Dante's Inferno... so yeah, a lot of differen't afterlife tropes piled together.
But what makes it so great is that it's a frickin' Mario game. Would you expect to see that stuff in a Mario game?
And let's not forget the wonderfully terrifying Twygz Riverbed with it's creepy grabby hands that slowly float towards you...

Dr Mcninja has a really cool concept of death where he's a skeleton in a waiters suit that takes the deceased to purgatory which is a restaurant where you have to eat the sins you committed before you can go to where ever next.
He's the only waiter so service is ridiculously slow with everyone just sitting at their tables impatiently

Personally, I only fear the death of those I love! I came to terms with my own mortality many years ago. And let's be honest: with all of these different iterations of death, who wouldn't want to die just to see what happens? Imean you could end up anywhere, even in a world where magic is real and you have the potential to be a hero! Or you could suffer for all eternity! Doesn't this sound like fun?

    • @pushinguproses

Indeed, I am not interested in dying or tragedy. I watched my Father die, and it was awful. But what I am interested in is art, and death and art, symbolism, portrayal, they all go hand-in-hand. Interesting things to think about.

My favorite version of death is from DC Comics. The Sandman series was written so well, and Death of the Endless was such a well written character who felt like an actual person. She has her own feelings on Mortality and sees herself and life as a beautiful thing, visiting people when they're born and when they die. How she actually goes into a mortal body every once in a while to appreciate her role even more. The fact that she's a character that loves so many people is also comforting to me. I like to imagine death as a good person like she is in Sandman.

    • @Cythil
      @Cythil 8 років тому +5

Well the soft C started to pop up in Latin later on. But you can be pretty sure that if it spelled with a C that it should be pounced with a proper hard C sound!
Generally the pronunciation of a lot of Greek and Latin words are butchered in English. That is why I find it a bit funny and sad that when English speakers snickers at Uranus, it is only funny for them because they are pronouncing it all wrong.

    • @Awakeandalive1
      @Awakeandalive1 8 років тому +1

      @Awakeandalive1 8 років тому

And same with "y" -- like in "hyper" and "phylactery" -- which is actually the Greek "u" but which we render as a "Y" because our letter "Y" looks like their capital "U". XD

    • @InternetMameluq
      @InternetMameluq 8 років тому +2

      Really? That's good to know.
I've been searching for evidence that X=H in archaic languages for like a couple years now but never found it. All I knew is old spanish words use 'X' like 'H' like Don Quixote, and Mexico. And also the fact the symbol x and H are very similar and look like they evolved from one another; along with 'X's redundancy in English.

    • @Painocus

+Awakeandalive1: Umm, no. Upsilon was pronounced as [y], [u] or even [v] depending on context. Latin split it into Y and V and later split V into V, U and W. In all those cases you mentioned it is pronounced [y] (which is different from the English Y, but that is another issue entierly. )

Not video games, but in Hindu mythology, the *Lord of the Underworld/Hell* (called _Nark_, pronounced "narc") is know as *Yam*(pronounced "Yum!"), or Yamraj ("Lord Yum!")
What's interesting about him is that is very punctual and wise, even more so than the Gods.
If you are interested, I recommend reading the *short story of "Nachiketa"*. A young boy asks Yam questions about death and all. One of my favorite stories in my childhood.

I remember how I was incredibly scared of my own mortality when I was a small kid. I used to constantly imagine not having my consciousness in my body anymore. Whenever I got sick, I couldn't sleep because I was constantly thinking that maybe I might die in my sleep. I just couldn't handle the fact that there was no way to avoid death.
Nowadays I'm glad that I don't think about it as much anymore. However, death is still a very hard concept for me to accept, but I'm trying my best to someday accept it as what it is.
Personally, I've always preferred the more human portrayals of Death, the ones where Death looks like a human and communicates like how actual humans could. This is because I've always thought humans are capable of being horrific monsters, so Death being more human is actually more scary to me than a skeleton or an ugly monster.
In a completely unrelated note Roses, I recommend you to play Rule of Rose on PS2. It's a mostly forgotten horror game that didn't sell well because it spark way too much controversy for its own good. I guess people don't always like it when you mix horror, violence and sexuality with children. :D The gameplay of the game is pretty terrible (progression is based on fetch quests, bad and buggy battle mechanics etc.), but the story, the music and the atmosphere are so good that in the end they make playing through the game worth it.
Oh yeah, also there was the controversy because of violence and sexuality mixed with kids. Thought you might like it. :'D

    • @SomePointlessShit

Markus Ranki I've always been quite the opposite, not that I've ever wish death upon myself mind you. I grew up with my father's side of the family being incredibly Buddhist believing in all things being temporary while my mother's side of the family being rather hippie/gypsy, believing that life is short and for the living. I also grew up in a Christian town and went to a Christian school. This combination bizarrely lead me to nihilism, the belief that all existence is pointless.
Looking throughout the world it has come apparent to me (not that I'm necessarily correct) that there is no afterlife and that death is just the body's lack of ability to keep vital organs functioning, after all life is just a machine that runs off of food and blood. I was, for a long time an atheist which came to me when I couldn't understand how the world could operate under supreme order. That being said the reason to live would always escape me. Those who were also atheists would say "to reproduce and pass on your genes!" but for what though? What are our children going to do with them that we and countless generations before us could not? That every species that exists anywhere in the universe could not? That lead me to the conclusion that really...
...Really there is no reason. Life has got no purpose and that really all struggles will ultimately be in vain. And if life carries no significance then why should death? Why should I fear my own demise or that of others, after all the dead don't realise they've died.
I don't advise this philosophy as it comes with a few side effects. Namely, what's stopping you from just killing yourself or others? Well first of all my mum would be proper sad, it'd probably hurt a lot, dead people can't log into steam and I'd probably get arrested. And none of those sound like fun.
Jeez, didn't mean for it to get so depressing but I thought I would share that, I like getting the opportunity to talk about philosophy.

    • @julian1000

"Namely, what's stopping you from just killing yourself or others? Well first of all my mum would be proper sad, it'd probably hurt a lot, dead people can't log into steam and I'd probably get arrested. And none of those sound like fun."
Sounds more like existentialism than nihilism. More that there is no *inherent* meaning to the universe and that all meaning is a man-made invention. This *doesn't* mean it doesn't exist, just that it is personal to each of us and dependent on who we are and what we want out of life. The unfortunate side effect of this philosophy is you have to come up with your own ideas of what it means to lead a meaningful life rather than being given them by religion/society/whatever else.
True nihilists would believe there is no meaning and you going on a murderous rampage is just as fine as not going on a murderous rampage because nothing matters and we're all just dust in the wind anyways.

    • @SomePointlessShit
      @SomePointlessShit 8 років тому +1

julian1000 Yeah, I've read about it a whole lot and I tend to boarder between the two. But I've identified myself as a nihilist as my ideologies align with Nietzsche's scarily often. If there was a name for a sort of mid-ground I might identify with that.
I just thought explaining a lifetime of philosophical quandaries was a bit meta for a youtube comment!
I do kind of believe that though as I said, if life holds no significance then why should death? Those are just the laws I've decided to govern myself by to make sure I don't go around hurting people. Which I think we can all agree is for the best.

    • @Egalitariat-likesecretariat

I'm an eminently practical man. I think in pragmatic terms. I don't often spend time thinking about philosophical matters outside of a small hobby of discussion with a couple of my friends.
My thoughts on death are, of course, not well-informed. I've never been dead, myself. However, I often wonder what lies beyond the boundaries of this universe. In this wondering, I've come to my own conclusion:
      Probably either nothingness or reincarnation.
By definition, the state of one's being after terminal death is unknowable. However, the systemic theme of the universe seems to be "self-sustenance". The laws of thermodynamics state that matter and energy cannot be created or destroyed. If souls exist (by which I mean that they have a physical presence), then they must have an impact on the thermodynamics of the universe. If so, then the energy used for their existence must be reused. If not, then death indictates the absolute end of the spiritual soul, and thus that there is no afterlife.
That's my two cents on the matter, anyway. Did I mention I'm atheistic?

  • @redwulf1943

When I think of life and death I think about the "to be or not to be" soliloquy from Hamlet and the "life is a tale told by an idiot" soliloquy from Macbeth. And as for a potrayal of Death... Does anyone remember Grim? From the Maximo games?
Now, the games treat his alliance with Maximo more as a "weird friendship", but it's pretty creepy when you think about it.
For those who haven't played: Maximo, a young king, returns home after a long war and finds his kingdom in peril - his advisor, Achille, turned out to be eeevil and seized control over the land. Sword is no match for the dark magic, and Maximo dies shortly after reaching the throne room. Over in Limbo, Grim finds him and gives the ex-king an offer he can't refuse - his life and an opportunity of revenge in exchange for restoration of the natural order. Achille is stealing souls from the Underworld, and Grim is pissed, so he wants the advisor dead. Maximo agrees, gets his soul binded to a Death Coin and is promptly returned into the world of the living (first level is a graveyard, implying that he had actually dug his way out of his own grave, lovely).
Now, it takes place in the same universe as Ghosts'n'Goblins. Yes, this means that the game is HARD, and keeping yourself alive is a challenge. After each game over, Grim comes to claim Maximo's soul, and creepily outstretches his skeletal hand, demanding payment in Death Coins. After each death, the amount of coins needed *rises*, and the only way Maximo can get more of them is by reaping enough souls. Hence, you constantly trying to outrun death, desperately searching for souls to exchange them for precious coins that will prevent you from dying for real this time. Because the moment you *run out*, the mocking cackle, swishing of a scythe and a flash of white light is *all you're going to get*. A final death.
Now, in the second game Grim actually tags along with Maximo, and the pair becomes quite a subject of rumors. A horror story of the "man who walks with death" spreads across the lands. Grim no longer sits on the sidelines, and can actually channel himself through Maximo for a short time now.
Well.. in the sadly unreleased would-to-be final-game-in-the-trilogy, shit gets darker. According to the surviving storyboards, their developed connection backfires - Maximo gets cursed and permanently possessed by Grim as a result. And since his body can't handle housing... well, the Death himself, this puts the pair on a time limit. ... Damn, I would've loved to see how this would've ended.

Not a game, but I was quite interested in the portrayal of Death in Doctor Who's Virgin New Adventures. There, she's an Eternal (a transcendental being of immense power, but limited creativity) whose mother was the daughter of a time traveling super-being and whose father was a a powerful psionic. She was younger than Pain, but older than Time.

Some of those Grim Fandango clips remind me of the reapers from The Mighty Boosh. It's a TV series, not a video game, but it had an amazing and hilarious portrayal of death, in which a reaper that collected takes someone to the afterlife does so through an other-dimensional taxi. All the reapers also have *really* strong cockney accents, and often hang out at a pub when they're off shift.
When limited my favourite portrayals to games though, Kings Quest 6, easily.

My two favorite quotes are both death related.
"That is not dead which can eternal lie and with strange aeons even death may die" - H.P. Lovecraft
the other is the final words of Voltaire, when asked by a priest if he renounced avarice and the devil, he said "This is no time to be making new enemies".

I feel you. In high school, I got into some concern with teachers and my parents about this. In ninth grade, some girls had read my novels and their parents got concerned cuz characters in the books had their names and had chapters of death.
I also raised some concern just last year with poetry I submitted for a senior poetry contest, something I wanted to enter into since ninth grade. I submitted five dark or sad poems and my case manager seemed to have read them because she said my writing reminded her of Sylvia Plath, who wrote dark poetry and committed suicide by putting her head into a gas oven.

Speaking of Hel, there's a particularly nifty depiction of her in The Secret World (now The Secret World Legends, which is FTP with a cash shop for vanity goodies). One of the winter events is Krampusnacht, which links Hel to Krampus, who in this version is one of her offspring. You can read the lore (and check out some screenshots) here: mysecretlore.wordpress.com/2015/12/28/krampus-hel-and-niflheim/ What I find particularly interesting about this version of Hel is how she's split down the middle with one side withered and blackened (from when Loki tied her between two trees and immersed that half in icy water), and the other is white and not so much with the dead. This design is reinforced on the ground in Niflheim in an artistic depiction (mysecretlore.files.wordpress.com/2015/12/niflheim-hel.png).

I haven't played the game but in the Discworld novels Death is my favorite character. He is probably one of the more complex portrayals of the Grim Reaper and several novels are centered on him including my favorite "The Hogfather" where he takes on the role of the Disc's version of Santa after he vanishes. He starts to get a bit too much into the role because for once people are happy to see him. The novel was also adapted quite well into a movie by the same name.

I still like how KQ6 did it, and the new KQ game even gave a call back to it.
The only other interpretation that I feel needs a mention is Super Paper Mario's take on it, which is again like KQ6's where it's a place you actually go to rescue someone (the underwhere).
The Discworld 2 game where Death takes a vacation and Rincewind gets to fill in. Death taking a vacation is a thing in Discworld.
Also, did you ever see "Dead Like Me" ?

To answer your question about KQ's afterife... it's implied in the series (or at least a popular fan interpretation) that there are actually numerous afterlives in the world, depending on where you resided in life: Daventry has the Dimension of Death, The Land of the Green Isles has the Land of the Dead, Eldritch has Ooga Booga and so on.

Have you considered doing a video about games with permadeath aspects and how these games address that feature? I know in games like FF Tactics Advance there's a few places with permadeath where the major characters in the game can actually die, which can be really heartbreaking (especially with Montblanc). Not scripted deaths like ff7, just games in which you can accidentally permanently lose characters.

    Favorite portrayal of the afterlife?
One of my own creation I did for an RPG campaign.
The players were essentially trying to "get out of hell" but my hell was... different. It was a frozen over wasteland, no drinkable water, no sign of food. The players wandered around until eventually they killed themselves or died from dehydration.
Once all players died, they woke up as if it was all a nightmare in the exact same wasteland, but this time, there was the howling of wolves in the distance.
Every time they died they had to restart with something worse existing with them. It became a game, do they suffer through the pain and last as long as possible because what comes next will only be worse, or do they just die as quickly as possible to avoid suffering.
I think on their 25th life they woke up in a tavern, thinking they finally escaped, only for them to try talking to the tavern owner, for him to appear faceless while all the bar patrons stabbed the players to 'death' with knives, causing them to wake up in the familiar wasteland again.on death 50 they woke back up in the tower and were so terrified to make it last that they went completely crazy and didn't want to touch anything. They were told by a bar maiden that they have died 50 times, once they die 100 they'll be given a chance for revival. This made deaths 51-99 a virtual suicide pact in a mad attempt to get out.
But after death 99 they didn't wake up in the wasteland, instead they woke up in a hospital, paralyzed, in incredible pain, and being kept on life support. They never reached death 100...

Darksiders 2 got a remake last year. In that game you play as Death himself. Not just any version though, you play at the Horsemen. The game lore mixes the reaper and horsemen together to get the character in question. He's also not the type of person you'd think he'd be. He's actually incredibly rude at times and one of his own brothers even refers to him as a "sarcastic bastard". War who is the youngest sibling and thus youngest brother, refers to Death's sense of humor as having a morose streak. Another thing to note about Death, is his temper. Oh he's got quite the nasty temper. Nothing like War of course, but War while easy to piss off is also fairly calm and collected a good majority of the time like a veteren commander. Death is also calm and collected most of the time, he also has a lot of secrets that he'd prefer stayed....well secret. Course when people do take notice of them, when something reminds him of the secrets, or hell even in the novel for the game someone wanted to use a secret Death kept to basically get revenge on Heaven and Hell. Once stuff like that happens Death is far easier to anger or offend. He's also quick to defend his siblings or himself if need be. Despite what his name implies, he's not the most humble person. That's not to say he can't be humble. There's a sidequest in Darksiders 2 that you get from the character Oran. After you reassemble his body(he's a giant golem like thing), he informs you of how he senses the people that created him are losing hope and need to reminded of who they are. To do this he needs a book called the Maker's Chronicle. This contains the history, lore, and songs of the Makers(them being the race in question). Once you do find and give Oran the book, he tells Death that he isn't as cold as he would have them all believe. Death gives a small embarrassed chuckle as he tells Oran to keep that to himself. So yes Death while pretty damn arrogant at times, can also show some humility at points. Funny how he's sure of his own power and skill as a warrior, yet when he shows how kind he can be to others and they point it out he brushes it off. Another character in the game that mentions Death's hidden kindness is an angel called Uriel. She gives Death a quest to release trapped angels from the torment of the bad guy they are dealing with(Spoilers he's dealt with in the first game). Death informs her that all he can do for them is offer a swift end, as they are basically undead and being controlled to attack their brethren. After freeing their souls Uriel informs him that his actions are surprisingly honorable. To which Death replys that he believes honor to be a fool's prize. Whether that was him being humble again or not is up for debate I'm sure. If you ever play Darksiders 2 PushingUpRoses, I encourage you to read the novel The Abomination Vault and the comic Death's Door(They are canon for the games so don't worry). Also I'd love to see your opinion of the game and the character of Death in it.

Man, that "Grim's Spreadsheet" was hilariously awesome! Great video as always, Roses. =) Make-up on point as always too.
Although I don't really like thinking about it on a serious level, I don't think I fear dying itself. What I do fear is dying before me time, young, without having done anything with my life.* To lose family or friends. It's like what happened to Tom Hanks's character at the end of The Green Mile:
    *Spoilers for The Green Mile!*
Where he got cursed with an unnaturally long life due to the wrongful execution of John Coffey. It being a curse because he outlived everyone he ever knew and loved. He watches all his friends die, his family... In the end he was all alone in the world. That really got to me.
    *End of Green Mile spoilers!*
*Without going into too much detail, I've basically been stuck at home for the last 8 or so years, unable to go to school or anything like that due to a medical condition that there is no current cure for, but that I'll hopefully get better from some day. No one's got a clue as to when, though. Anyway, yeah. In my current condition and place in life I _do_ fear death and dying, but I imagine that if/when I get to the point where I'm an old man, I've got grandchildren running around me and I've managed to lead a successful life, doing the things I love (my dream is to become a chef), when my time then comes, I'll be content with my fate, knowing that I've lead a good life (given that I don't get cancer or some shit like that and die a sudden death... But c'mon, the universe wouldn't be _that_ shitty to me, right?). Right now I can't see how I'll get to that point, though.

I remember this random internet comic that was a funny depiction. We made all kinds of iterations to make death seem ominous when in reality death is just a simple duck.
I also liked how a web comic "Doctor McNinja" depicted death. He was a waiter who served you in the limbo Restaurant. After being seated you would have to wait for what seemed for eternity before served your after life.
Ya know they're not from games, but I always think of those when this subject comes up. I've been faced with death in many different forms that I don't think I could be afraid. If it happens, it happens. Not a lot you could do after the fact. The fact that after all I've been thru, I'm still here. That's gotta could for something right? Would I play a game with death? Depends on what's for ante! Personally, as a gamer, just one game with whatever death was would be a real treat before an eternal afterlife ... even it he is a duck ^_^

My favorite portrayal of Death is from the comic book Sandman by Neil Gaiman. In that series death is a really chill woman who likes and gets along with everyone. I love this portrayal because it is so different from what we usually see. Normally death is portrayed as either grim or skarky in media, but in Sandman she acts as a friend and a guide to.... Whatever is next. There are also a few spin off books that only follow the character Death that I would recommend. If you search for Death by Neil Gaiman on amazon they are the first results.
