This games play style is rather unique among the Sierra games. It isn't so much about solving the puzzle in front of you to progress, it is more about the investigation of the characters and exploration of the environment. There is more to looking at an object at times, you might need to come back and notice it has moved or work out who it would have belonged to. You will need to notice and remember things about people and visit areas to check if someone else has been there since you were last around. It also feels like a game that is intended to be replayed over and over. To get that perfect Super Sleuth you will need to know this game very very well and on top of that need to make sure you have a perfect run of the events. Save early, save often applies but so does save smart. All and all a stand out game in the Sierra line and a must play for adventure fans and murder mystery fans.
Damn right 💪 This cliché boujee family from the bayou must have inspired the “Knives Out” movie. They’re too many similarities to point out. I need to research it
These are the types of games I really love to hear Roses talk about because she knows them so well and you can really sense her excitement and passion. Awesome video ^^
This game looks really well made. The dithering in the pixel art, like you mentioned, is insane. And also really a creative use of the noise channel in the sound chip. Using it for the sound of the shower going, I would've never thought of that. Shows you how much they used their limited resources to the fullest back in the day.
playing it and finished it in 2017! the fact that I'm playing this game 30 years after its release proves it is a great game, and one of the best of its kind.
i have you and your videos to blame for dragging me into the world of adventure games, and honestly, i couldn't be happier about it. thank you so much, Roses!
Great job with this review Roses. And so many funny moments! (Also while watching this I randomly had memories like of LGR reading Lillian's lines in Duke Nukem's voice). :D
I love the Laura Bow games!! I've watched both of your LPs on them multiple times and I just completed Dagger. When I saw this video on my feed it made my day, haha. Thank you for introducing me to this awesome series! (:
I didn't play this back in the day and even when I tried to do a Sierra run I always forget about it. This was quite the nice reminder! It looks GORGEOUS.
The visual style of this game is incredible. It evokes everything I love about the look of old, atmospheric PC games. It's colorful and striking, yet grim.
A tiny bit off topic: I got a copy of the book Callahans Crosstime Saloon this weekend and I love it. So I just had to thank you for introducing me to that little gem.
Great video as always! I always love it when you review these older adventure games as we didn't get a family PC until I was a teenager and by that time these titles had come and gone. I am strangely intrigued by them as I don't have a ton of exposure to these older adventure games except for a handful as I would find them in Goodwill and snatch them up when I could. Your humorous and detailed take on these games is incredible. Thanks as always for sharing another amazing video as I always look forward to them:)
I was obsessed with this game from when I first played it as a preteen, but I admit the first time I played it I also didn't know about the secret passages and missed out on almost everything.
Dear god my great aunt has a clock that chimes like that and it has caused me to have a visceral reaction whenever I hear it. Damn thing used to chime every 15 minutes from 6:30am to 11:00pm.
Murder mysteries suit you perfectly! You know, there's a hidden gem from the same genre that no one pays any attention to, shame... It was released originally for the PS2 (then ported to XBOX, PC and PSP) by a big company that made amazing games for many years but is now generally despised by all gamers. That's all I'm saying because of very mysterious reasons, but I do hope it finds its way to you in some form or another.
Looks fun. I'm playing a Poirot game right now, and it really leads you by the hand, step by step, thru the game. This one seems much better, more game designers should use it as a model.
That red magnifying glass and the special sheet remind me of the "tech specs" that used to be on the backs of Transformers packages. It has a little rectangular bit of red plastic you could lay over a special part of the box and it displayed "stats" for that particular transformer like speed, strength, and energy projection.
Not to be weird about it, but really enjoy listening to PUR talk so happily about one of her passions. I feel the same way about LGR so it's not in that sexy sexy way. Just 2 youtubers I identify with and would totally want to be friends with.
I'm genuinely surprised you haven't turned that magnifying glass into a necklace. Seems like a great way to display your love of the macabre and PC gaming.
The way to play this game is with the MT-32 set up via MUNT emulator. This really elevates the soundtrack to the next level and adds multiple ambient sounds as well as treats you with a welcoming message on the MT-32 display
Ahhh, I totally missed that use for the monocle, and I don't recall figuring out the notebook's use either - I just kept my own physical notes. At least I found the spy holes, but even so I got the sad ending and I don't think I raked more then an average gumshoe. Only played it the once though - I was a little miffed about how much seemed to be down to dumb luck, but the atmosphere was spectacular even in 2012.
As a fan of point & click adventures, and macabre/horror stuff... how is it possible you haven't already made a Shadow Of The Comet review/letsplay ? I would love to hear you talk about this legendary difficult lovecraftian game !
Always love ur reviews, PUR. Grew up right in the same era and the games u choose r right up my alley. Keep it going 💙👍 If I had any requests, maybe some more Monkey Island... and I dunno, maybe some Wing Commander or some other Sierra stuff. Guess cuz I'm a guy I love the Space Quest /Larry stuff... but do ur thing. Thanks for it all :-)
Are there issues with CPU clock speed in this game like there are in other Sierra titles? If you don't slow down the CPU, will events progress to quickly?
I didn't find that to be a problem in this game because they work on time triggers. It's not a real time thing like some games, you can ONLY progress time by hitting those events.
ah, loved this game when I was a kid. Too young to really play it on my own so me and my brother would pretty much watch my mom play and go along for the ride :D
A mystery game centered around a series of events you have to unravel sounds like a lot of fun, but it's really annoying that you have to do the right things in the right order without running into a randomly-wandering drunk to get the clues needed to put things together. If only there was some way you could view the events in a game out of chronological order while preserving the challenge. By the way, did you hear that the Obra Dinn drifted back into port? I hear the insurance company's already inspecting it.
I miss the old days with point-and-click adventure games on every corner. Broken Sword: The Serpents Curse was pretty good, proving there is still a place for the genre today.
I always thought it was a real shame that the epic Clarence Beatdown was missed in the playthrough you and Clint did. One thing I've wondered, ever since that playthrough. Can you use the copy protection page to decipher the fingerprints you find throughout the game?
Good question! This is something I tried doing when I was younger. You can ... kind of ... decipher them. The ones in the game are small and not as detailed as the copy protection page, but a few key parts of the fingerprints did match up.
After you discover Gertie asleep and leave her room, while you're busy picking up and examining the handkerchief, the killer is stepping out of the secret passage and dumping her out the window. The killer then uses some sort of external walkway to leave, because if I recall correctly the game takes a moment out to show you a scene of the killer walking past some windows on the second floor. This only happens the once I think, since on the first floor you can often see the killer walking past windows in all the back rooms of the house. I can't perfectly recall when that little scene happens though, so it might not be connected to Gertie's death. So, while the timing window for the event to happen is ridiculously tiny, but there at least IS a way for the killer to get in and out of the room without having to walk past you.
Played this in black & white when i was a kid. Loved it, any modern murder mysteries worth giving a shot? Modern system I mean. Already played all of the Secret Files games.
It wasn't black and green but I was so young at the time I'm not sure if it was cga or what exactly. I remember thinking the game came that way and playing what I thought at the time was a newer copy in color a few years later. It was for sure black & white with shades of gray but I'm not sure why
You probably already know this but when played through Scummvm there is an option to 'un-dither' games that use this engine. While I sometimes like the dithering for nostalgia, the un-dithering for some of the games really looks great in my opinion. This game and Conquests of Camelot really used dithering ALOT, and are most changed with this feature.
If GOG ever picks this up, I think we need a Roses voice acting patch for it. The steamy affair cracked me up
Welp, guess what series was just added. Right after I got it working in dosbox with Dagger of Amon |Ra's voiced version.
I'm waiting for a Steam release to play it, seems like my type of game!
Does she play games anymore?
This games play style is rather unique among the Sierra games. It isn't so much about solving the puzzle in front of you to progress, it is more about the investigation of the characters and exploration of the environment. There is more to looking at an object at times, you might need to come back and notice it has moved or work out who it would have belonged to. All and all a stand out game in the Sierra line and a must play for adventure fans and murder mystery fans.
This game definitely needs a reboot.
I don't think so. The game still holds for me... also the charm of the EGA gfx and the text commands is part of it.
Oh, didn't expect to see you here.
HD Remake maybe.
I'd prefer FMV version, '11th hour' way.
They'd sexualize the shit out of the main character and get a sort of horny ADD
“Didn’t Alfred teach you anything?”
🤣
This is one of my favorite Sierra games of all time.
Damn right 💪
This cliché boujee family from the bayou must have inspired the “Knives Out” movie. They’re too many similarities to point out. I need to research it
Such cool game, true, but where i can find more complex story behind of creating that gem, who knows it out there?
These are the types of games I really love to hear Roses talk about because she knows them so well and you can really sense her excitement and passion. Awesome video ^^
Oh my god I love the colonels bequest!! Most underrated sierra title EVER. All the attention goes to kings quest and space quest
Who cares about the murders? That piano isn't going to listen to itself!
This game looks really well made. The dithering in the pixel art, like you mentioned, is insane. And also really a creative use of the noise channel in the sound chip. Using it for the sound of the shower going, I would've never thought of that. Shows you how much they used their limited resources to the fullest back in the day.
THANK YOU for seemingly understanding my obsession with Laura Bow.
It's not a bunny, it's a chest hare. I'm not even a little sorry.
No that's a bunny
@@everythingpony You missed the joke. Give it a re-read.
King's Quest Collection was where I discovered Laura Bow. One of the best gifts I've ever received.
2:48 - 3:03
Roses's impressions of Nadja and Laszlo from What We Do In The Shadows are pretty spot on.
I'd definitely watch a play through of a game where Rose supplies the voice acting. An older JRPG would be hilarious and awesome!
playing it and finished it in 2017!
the fact that I'm playing this game 30 years after its release proves it is a great game, and one of the best of its kind.
Circling back to this video and just wanted to say I love your review style. Just a great little video lol
i have you and your videos to blame for dragging me into the world of adventure games, and honestly, i couldn't be happier about it. thank you so much, Roses!
The MT-32 sound on this makes it creepier. This is a game that needs a GOG release and a remake.
Already out on GOG now.
Great job with this review Roses. And so many funny moments! (Also while watching this I randomly had memories like of LGR reading Lillian's lines in Duke Nukem's voice). :D
me too, the duke voices was the best, also when LGR did duke voice on the old lady, i completely lost it XD
The ghost always creeped me out in the game.
The people never believed Laura about the murders:
"Oh, Laura. You always were a Kidder."
I've been binging your vids for 3 days now (i think) & i am still entertained. 👌💕🇵🇭
I love the Laura Bow games!! I've watched both of your LPs on them multiple times and I just completed Dagger. When I saw this video on my feed it made my day, haha. Thank you for introducing me to this awesome series! (:
This game creeped me out the first time I played it! Strolling around the mansion...la la la, oh god, dead body! lol
I love your weird but funny impressions of the characters.
I LOVED! watching you play this. ABSOLUTELY LOVED your let's play! You MUST! DO this again!
I didn't play this back in the day and even when I tried to do a Sierra run I always forget about it. This was quite the nice reminder! It looks GORGEOUS.
Ok, you doing all the voices absolutely Slayed me. Not fair. Now you are the murdehereh
The visual style of this game is incredible. It evokes everything I love about the look of old, atmospheric PC games. It's colorful and striking, yet grim.
Thank you for sharing this. I think it's great someone is giving attention to these great classic games
Playing this again after about 30 years and enjoying it all over again
So weird that this video went up today. I had a dream LAST NIGHT that I was trapped in a real-life version of this game.
MarianneBrandon cool
Your let's play of the game actually caused me to hunt down a physical copy of it. It's now one of my favorite adventure games, so thanks!
And also: playing the Laura/Steve music during the Clarence/Gloria scene? Amahzing.
A tiny bit off topic: I got a copy of the book Callahans Crosstime Saloon this weekend and I love it. So I just had to thank you for introducing me to that little gem.
Ah, love the dithering colors
I absolutely LOVE this game and wish they’d make something new and updated today!
Hey I watched your walkthrough of TCB with LGR and it was great! Love backgrounds in this game.
welp time to rewatch the pur and lgr let’s play
Great video as always! I always love it when you review these older adventure games as we didn't get a family PC until I was a teenager and by that time these titles had come and gone. I just watched your Let's Play with LGR this weekend, and then this was posted. Creepy.
Dear god my great aunt has a clock that chimes like that and it has caused me to have a visceral reaction whenever I hear it. Damn thing used to chime every 15 minutes from 6:30am to 11:00pm.

I totally agree. I LOVE all the murder mystery-themed games out there, and Roses' presentations of them are cool af. :)
Looks fun. I'm playing a Poirot game right now, and it really leads you by the hand, step by step, thru the game. This one seems much better, more game designers should use it as a model.
This game looks beautifully crafted, I might have to give it a try... excellent in-depth and entertaining review, as always.
That red magnifying glass and the special sheet remind me of the "tech specs" that used to be on the backs of Transformers packages. It has a little rectangular bit of red plastic you could lay over a special part of the box and it displayed "stats" for that particular transformer like speed, strength, and energy projection.
Oh dear! I've played this game so many times and it never even occured to me that you could open the doors when Fifi is changing.
reasons to love roses:
she nice
she spice
she say “hey everyone” twice
I constantly rewatch your play through videos of this (ft. LGR). You're awesome and so is this game :D
This was my all time favourite Sierra game I still have it actually
Also feel like it need to be mentioned that the music is downright amazing.
5:40
Wow, not only does Jeeves look at the camera, but he also does that meaningful eyebrow wiggle, like "Eh? Pretty cool, huh?"
Not to be weird about it, but really enjoy listening to PUR talk so happily about one of her passions. I feel the same way about LGR so it's not in that sexy sexy way. Just 2 youtubers I identify with and would totally want to be friends with.
Hi there, This game is literally my childhood!! It and the sequel are still two of my most beloved games.
Great video Roses. The game looks bizarre but interesting. Love these retro game gems. Keep up with the good work.
Awww, you cut off the fight at the end before Clarence gives Rudy the finger. XD
Also, I'd LOVE to see you do a followup of The Dagger of Amon Ra. :D
I also got this in some kind of Sierra bundle. Best bundle ever
This is one game that I wish the fan groups ADG Interactive and Infamous Adventures had remade with deep color and voice acting.
This video reminds me of the fun co-ops with LGR.. Here's hoping there will be another soon
Your reviews keep getting better and better! Keep up the great work! (too many "keep"?)
You should totally do a play through of this game. I love murder mysteries. ⚰️❤️
Already did one. Check my channel. :) Did one on Colonel's Bequest AND The Dagger of Amon Ra!
I love your let's play of this with LGR
I Really Wish That I Could Say That I Grew up Playing The Laura Bow Games
The best games are the ones we were defintely too young to play at the time. Loved this and its bonkers sequel.
I'm genuinely surprised you haven't turned that magnifying glass into a necklace. Seems like a great way to display your love of the macabre and PC gaming.
Love that Rudy the asshole part, which fits him. This went through many replays to get all clues out of it. Excellent review.
I really like that Sierra 16 color dithering style. Much better than the scanned 256 color style they later used.
Just heard about the game. Very good Style! Thanks for UA-cam Work!
Great game, had it on Atari 1040ST. The way the murders happened in different locations each play through blew my mind at the time.
Loved this review. Great stuff as always!
Hullo! I found your channel today and I love it! Keep up the good work!
1:31 hey that's the same chime as in literally every high school anime game ever made
The way to play this game is with the MT-32 set up via MUNT emulator. This really elevates the soundtrack to the next level and adds multiple ambient sounds as well as treats you with a welcoming message on the MT-32 display

Enjoyed it. I loved it. Your narration was hilarious. 😂😍
i think i played this at my cousins house in the 90s...
5:52 I knew it! Ha ha :P
One of my favorite Sierra games :)
As a fan of point & click adventures, and macabre/horror stuff... how is it possible you haven't already made a Shadow Of The Comet review/letsplay ? I would love to hear you talk about this legendary difficult lovecraftian game !
Col. Dijon's maid was freakin' HOT!
Jeez your make up is amazing. I'm surprised you haven't done a series of make up videos for the unique looks you're able to pull off.
Thanks, but there wouldn't be anything to my "normal" looks (like in this one). It's just foundation and lipstick. :)
need to visit the sequel
this review makes me want to play the game, I love the art style and the mechanics!
Thanks for it all :-)
XD You sure love little birdies :D
We really need more games like this. I mean, they might exist, but they sure are hard to find :(
Are there issues with CPU clock speed in this game like there are in other Sierra titles? If you don't slow down the CPU, will events progress to quickly?
I didn't find that to be a problem in this game because they work on time triggers. It's not a real time thing like some games, you can ONLY progress time by hitting those events.

That Shower death more violent than the 1 in psycho. As you see the stroke patterns and blood spray.
After you discover Gertie asleep and leave her room, while you're busy picking up and examining the handkerchief, the killer is stepping out of the secret passage and dumping her out the window. Did you have a monocrome monitor or was it by choice? B&W would suit this game well I think.
It wasn't black and green but I was so young at the time I'm not sure if it was cga or what exactly. I remember thinking the game came that way and playing what I thought at the time was a newer copy in color a few years later. It was for sure black & white with shades of gray but I'm not sure why
This was great! Please tell us you'll do a let's play of this!
She already did. Check out her video archive. ;)
I missed your videos!
Had Roses ever done a review of LA Noire? That seems like a modern game that would be up her alley.
This game looks really good, never heard of it, going to have to check it out. Good video!
It came out on GOG last week with The Dagger of Amon Rar.
This had some excellent sound effectsing
You can get past the copy protection pretty easily in this game. I did it quite a few times when I was younger.
