  • The University of Alabama’s Dr. Aijun Song and his research students recently visited the Gulf of Mexico to map a submerged Cypress forest with autonomous underwater vehicles.
The forest, believed to be approximately 60,000 years old, was discovered around a decade ago, and scientists are wanting to uncover its secrets. Song’s AUVs are able to image the forest at a faster rate than human divers, and they could unlock ancient answers to help predict coastal land loss in the future.
