    Okee!!!! Pulled a turkey move this morning and accidentally posted my video early while playing around with studio beta. It's officially up now :) Thanks to King George and Philippe Lewin for the initial comments! Also, I'm curious: WHAT KIND OF RAZOR DO YOU USE?!?

      I use a Remington electric rotary shaver that I got as a gift years ago. Before that, I used to use the Bump Fighter single-blade safety razor with its unique guard grill, even though I am not of African heritage.

      haha. I am noticing a trend with your razor usage :) You're not a fan of multi-blade razors that cut hair slightly below the surface of this skin. Are your choices because you're prone to razor bumps? The technical term for razor bumps is pseudofolliculitis barbae - it's when strands of hair coming out of the skin turn inward toward skin i.e. an ingrown hair. It's not just people of African heritage that experience the problem. I've met a lot of people from different backgrounds that struggle with it. Bump Fighter is one way to go, another great brand is Bevel if you're looking for a non-disposable razor. You could also find another safety razor that comes with an adjustable gap between the blade and the guard and adjustments for blade exposure. If you tell the company you have issues with razor bumps, I am sure they can make recommendations about blade exposure and aggressiveness.

      @@Msbeautyphile : I'll be honest-- I just do not like the idea of dealing with shaving cream! I am of southeast Asian lineage, and although I do not get shaving bumps, I am prone to adult acne, so I do not mind sticking with "low-contact" razors. Thank you for the information!

    I still find it kind of funny how barbers were once also surgeons. I mean, it's all just a bunch of cutting, right?
    (Also, my razor game is broke teenager who doesn't fully understand how the whole thing works)

    • @Msbeautyphile
      @Msbeautyphile  5 років тому +2

      Barbers were also surgeons because they were the guys with the sharpest blades! 🔪🔪🔪 Sharpness definitely matters. It's like if you're a chef and you're cutting carrots. If you have a dull knife, it requires more pressure to cut, that can increase the change that your knife might slip and cut more than just your hair. Do you know what sorta razor you're using now? Are you having any specific challenges? I might be able to give you some insights!

    Ever since a modern cartridge razor’s plastic pivot broke on my face and nicked my skin. (It wasn’t some cheap thrift brand but a Gillette Mach 5 I had only used for a month.) I switched to an antique Double Edge Gillette Adjustable Razor I bought on Ebay for $13. That razor was great when I still shaved daily, and double edge safety razor blades are cheap.
    But nowadays I just leave the beard on my face, and trim it once it gets close to an inch long. I only fully shave for special occasions today.

    Had an electronic razor in high school, I hated it. Then I used a modern razor all my college days and never liked it. Now I use double edge one, the Merkur 23C, a zerowaster staple. All inox, blades included. meaning everything is recyclable. Modern disposable blades aren't recyclable because it is mixed materials also blades are dirt cheap. I used my modern razor a lot . I found that I would cut myself more if use multiple blades unless it's a fresh cardrige but that's crazy budget if you change them and shave regularly. I believe shaving just like cooking is better and safer with only one very sharp blade. I learned to enjoy my shaving session with the old school technique. Some people like to use manual focus on their camera, I learned to love to do the manual tilt with the razor ahah. Shaving became a different experience and I love it now.
    My favorite shaving UA-cam video is the tutorial from executive shaving. Where the guy explains with details temperature, tilt, multiple steps.
    I still haven't found my favorite soap but I look forward finding it.

      Philippe! I will be in your neck of the woods soon! I am hoping we can grab lunch! Will DM you directly! That is true -- they coat the blades on modern razors, but I had no idea that made them unrecyclable. When I get a chance, I will review the info I found on the coatings. Thanks for dropping the knowledge! 🙌 I also love the comparison you made to using a manual focus camera. YES, some people like the extra control. At the moment I am undecided! The modern razor is really just so easy, but I tried to shave my bikini line with modern razor--- and that was a no go. For that, I prefer the safety razor better. I did however cut my finger with the safety razor when making this video :/

      I did not know there was coating. I was thinking about the mixing of plastic + metal. I just remembered that the girl who sold you the razor told you that. ua-cam.com/video/_2YYcz4ceqM/v-deo.html
      Something can be recycled if ($$$cost of) energy_consumption_reduced > ($$$cost of) energy_consumption_to_recycle (or if there is a law to force recycling of it)
      To recycle a cartridge the plastic and metal must be separated. Unfortunately the energy needed to separate the two will make recycling costly.
      As it is not possible to make an economic benefit from recycling razor cartridges for now, it is likely that all the cartridges you used in your life still exists somewhere in a landfill with our plastic toothbrushes and qtips. An other possibility is that some cartridges were burned to create heat energy and a supermagnet managed to extract the metal but I am not able to estimate the likeliness of that.
      There are lot of places like that that are ecological traps. Imagine you buy a baguette or a sandwich and the baker gives you a kraft bag to protect the baguette.
      100% kraft bag -> great you can compost it if you are able to compost. (I agree almost nobody does that but that's possible)
      70% kraft bag 30% eco plastic window from corn -> great you can admire your sandwich and compost the bag.
      70% kraft bag 30% standard plastic window -> at best, one can separate the kraft bag for composting and put the plastic window for trash. Dirty plastic is not recyclable, washing it to make it recyclable is not worth it (in $ point of view) because energy_consumption_reduced by recycling < energy_consumption_to_recycle.
      To come back to shaving techniques, I found some great insights from shady subreddits with threads similar to 'strippers of reddit, how do you shave?'. In case you are still researching about that.
      If you make again a comparison again please do attempt to dry shave xD at least use the hard/bar soap after a warm shower.
      If I had to perform an experiment again after a 3 weeks body hair growth I would use an electric trimmer first.
      Also I remember having issues with ingrown hair with the modern razor but at the time I was far less knowledgeable, I did not know that exfoliation and proper direction were important to prevent that.
      With my own research and experimentation, I found security razors superior for at least ecology and cost.
      For performance (I am thinking time shaving + length of hair removed + ingrown hair + razor injuries probability) I found difficult to tell. But only with a security razor I am enjoying the time I spend shaving.

      Different strokes for different folks! Some people really like that control the straight razor gives them, where other people prefer safety. I cut my finger with a safety razor while shooting this video, so may that's an indicator of what type of razor I should own 😜 You know, our cave dwelling ancestors used flint or obsidian to shave. There is also archaeological evidence that show materials like horns, clam shells, and shark teeth were used.

    5:27 And what do MsBeautyPhile uses?
    Myself, I have a normal beard, so my shaving is just to trim the neck and the area around the cheek bones. I don't use any cream or soap. However, I do usually shave within 2 mins of stepping out of the shower. Also I use a generic 4-blade razor, which lasts me months at a time.
    How many do they experience the same to this: Regardless if it's a new blade or not, I realize that if I shave a 2 day (or older) beard, the resulting shave is much close than if I shave every day.

    • @Msbeautyphile
      @Msbeautyphile  5 років тому +1

      Okay, so just a few little facts about beard hair, just for grins and giggles. Scalp hair fibers were reported to have half the number of cuticle layers (the out sheath of the hair fiber) compared to beard hairs from the same subject. Beard hair also has a larger cross sectional area and exhibits an asymmetrical shape. These structural properties can really impact shaving. Maybe there is something about your hair that makes it easier for it to cut! My leg hair is very very fine. I can shave dry and it's nbd and just like you, my razor cartridges last for months (about 3). so maybe we just have very fine hair that is not norm. ;P For razors, I got two. I have a modern razor that I use for legs and underarms, and a vintage razor that I use on my bikini line.

      in regards to your comment, "Regardless if it's a new blade or not, I realize that if I shave a 2 day (or older) beard, the resulting shave is much close than if I shave every day." ---> I was going to say it could be that your blade isn't picking up the hair as well, so it needs a days more worth of growth, before it can catch and cleanly remove the hair, but if you swap to a new blade and are still seeing the same effect, then maybe finding something where you get a more exposed blade might be worth exploring. Maybe you're fine with your current grooming practices though. It's totally okay to not obsess about this stuff. 😜

      Okay! Sorry for my goofball mistake. The vid is LIVE now! Price is such a huge factor! I learned a ton from doing this video! There is definitely a right razor for the right job. I can see why beard wearers love vintage razors for example, that adjustable width between the blade and the guard let's longer beard hair pass through easier whereas the modern razor just gets clogged. But I did this wacky experiment where i tried to grow our my arm pit hair for 3 weeks (I most likely will not share the pictures), and I did a dry shave --- the modern razor was totally superior! Gave me a clean shave in 2 swipes! The vintage razor -- well dry shave with that was something I regret :/
