Pianist Nadia Shpachenko and I have been talking about collaborating over the last few years. So composer Wessel van Rensburg and I decided to write something together - with her beautiful piano playing in mind - and created three sketches for flute and piano. This one is called Used To Be - we’re taking a nostalgic look into the past and the way things used to be.

    ABOUT WOUTER KELLERMAN
Globe-trotting flutist and composer Wouter Kellerman received a GRAMMY® Award for his album Winds of Samsara, also reaching #1 on the US Billboard Charts and peaking at #1 on the Zone Music Reporter Top 100 International Radio Airplay Chart.
His following album Love Language received a GRAMMY® nomination for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album. From the album, the song ‘The Long Road’, a solo flute piece which Wouter wrote for Nelson Mandela, won the 2016 Global Peace Song Award in the Acoustic/ Contemporary Music category.
'Symphonic Soweto, A Tribute to Nelson Mandela' is a collaboration with the Soweto Gospel Choir and features the KwaZulu Natal Philharmonic and Angelique Kidjo. From the album, Wouter’s composition ‘Soweto Travels’ won first prize in the instrumental category of the 2018 USA Songwriting Competition. The album won the 2018 SAMA for ‘Best Adult Contemporary Album’. This was Kellerman’s seventh SAMA award, reinforcing his status as one of South Africa’s foremost musicians.
Wouter has performed all over the world in places like Berlin, Shanghai, Delhi and Sydney, including three sold-out concerts at Carnegie Hall in New York City. In 2010 he performed at the FIFA Soccer World Cup Closing Ceremony to a global audience of 700-million viewers.
Passionate about teaching and empowering young people, Kellerman has sponsored ten children in the SOS Children’s Village in Ennerdale, South Africa for the past 18 years; he has also financed the building of a house in the SOS Children’s Village in Rustenburg. For his continued efforts in helping give these children better lives, Kellerman was nominated by the SOS Children’s Villages for the Inyathelo Special Recognition Award for Philanthropy.
    ABOUT NADIA SHPACHENKO
GRAMMY® winner Nadia Shpachenko enjoys bringing into the world things that are outside the box - powerful pieces that often possess unusual sonic qualities or instrumentation. Nadia’s concert highlights include recitals at Concertgebouw, Carnegie Hall, Disney Hall, on the Piano Spheres and Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Green Umbrella and Chamber Music Series, and with numerous orchestras in Europe and the Americas.
Described as “an exceptional recording of newly composed piano works” (Textura Magazine), Nadia’s album “Woman at the New Piano” was nominated for 58th GRAMMY Awards® in 3 categories.
Nadia’s new 2019 Reference Recordings album “The Poetry of Places” features premieres of solo and collaborative works (performed with LA Phil pianist Joanne Pearce Martin and LAPQ percussionists Nick Terry and Cory Hills) inspired by diverse buildings. It won a 62nd GRAMMY® Award in the Best Classical Compendium Category.
She is a Steinway Artist and professor of music at Cal Poly Pomona University and Claremont Graduate University.

So I arrived at the party after all the other guests left - sometimes that's the nature of YT recommendations ;). I LOVED every aspect of this upload! Both Wouter and Nadia transition between the uneven eighths (swing timing) and rigid timing with flair and cohesion. Nadia takes full advantage of the dynamic range of the pianoforte and does not shy away from dissonant voicing - her playing would bring joy to Stravinsky. Wouter has some beautiful legato passages but there is also that imp insisting that a flute can be part of a rhythm section. The rapid yet rhythmic flutter tongue and abbreviated stabs convince me the imp is right. I momentarily forgot to recognize Wessel van Rensburg here because I was focused on the playing. Please know that was in no way intended as a slight! You and Wouter conceptualized this music that brought joy to me - thank you sincerely.
